A few questions about Sinful Colors "Quick Dry." by Jimileighbin RedditLaqueristas

[–]nailphile 2 points3 points ago

I have it and I do think it helps with dry time. The best way to use it is to dunk the brush in, quickly pull it out, and let a drop of of fall onto your nail. It will spread put on its own. I don't know if you know this but it is not a top coat.

My favorite top coats in order are Out The Door, SH insta-dri, and Oh So Wet.

Tell me about your collection. by jennwasawesomein RedditLaqueristas

[–]nailphile 3 points4 points ago

I don't have a pictue of my collection :(. But I have about 179 polishes. Assuming an average cost of $4 that's about $716. But it's worth so much more to me.

What's even worse is that I got my entire collection between July 2011 and now. It kind of hurts to think about how much I could have saved.

[Q] How do you guys pick your nail shapes? by PandaCin RedditLaqueristas

[–]nailphile 1 point2 points ago

I lightly file mine into the shape that is closest to the natural shape. For me that happens to be a square or squoval.

It also depends on shape. When they're short its round all the way. As they get longer I transform them into squares.

I tried pointed nails once and hated them.

Glittery french mani. I don't think they are tacky, but then again, I grew up in the midwest. ;) by seanseanseanseanin RedditLaqueristas

These are far from tacky. This showcases everything good about French manis. Very well done and very elegant.

What is something of yours that you absolutely hate people touching? by Fiasko21in AskReddit

[–]nailphile 2 points3 points ago

YES!!! I hate it so much that I put my hand over it all most all the time. And if someone does come close to touching it I will freak the fuck out.

I just found out a group of grade 8 girls (and maybe a few boys) are doing a business giving blowjobs for $5 during lunch at my school. What other fucked up, "I don't want to live on this planet anymore" have occurred in your high schools? by f1ipnrgin AskReddit

[–]nailphile 101 points102 points ago

One girl in my class decided she was going to pull a senior prank. Her brilliant idea was to put a goldfish in every toilette. Which is kind of funny I guess.

What makes this story so fucked up is that she was a member of PETA. After she put a fish in one of the toilettes she flushed to see what would happen I guess. Well, when fishy went bye-bye and never came back she cried because she killed a fish.

I remember thinking "WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU THINK WAS GOING TO HAPPEN?!?!?! You stupid bitch."

First trip to Ulta coming up I'd like to have a game plan. by micoleslawin RedditLaqueristas

Happy birthday!

I like to pick through the clearance. You can find polishes from old-ish collections sometimes. Plus more polish for your money is never a bad thing.

I recommend looking through blogs to see what has come out recently that they might have when you get there. Pick what you want from each collection and write it down. Nail polish shopping list! Maybe even call them to see if/when they will be getting them.

My next recommendation is to go for stuff you can't get where you live. Of course you know that but it can be easy to go for comfort in a big store like that.

Basically just take your time and start on one side. Go through each aisle and pick what you want. Don't be like me and aimlessly walk across the store three dozen times. It stresses me out and makes me forget where I saw that one thing I decided I want now.

As for non-nail products...I absolutely adore Pur minerals foundation.

And now I feel weird because I feel like I told you how to shop...

Calling upon the laquerista goddesses: top/base coat advice/reviews by higgyskiggyin RedditLaqueristas

[–]nailphile 1 point2 points ago

A little late to the thread, but I'm going to share my experiences anyway.

My favorite base coat is Sinful Colors base coat. Favorite top coat is Out the Door.

What to look for depends on your nails. If your nails are dry try something hydrating/nourishing. If they are weak, try something with a strengthener. I have lots of ridges, so I look for a ridge filler. Ridge fillers are usually a pinkish creamy fleshtone type of color but clear on the nail.

I have tried a bunch of top coats so I'm just going to review them for you.

I'm skeptical of anything that doubles as top and base coat. I've used a Revlon and a Rimmel of this variety and they were OK, not great. But because top and base coats do different jobs it makes me wonder if it's just clear polish in that bottle. But some people love these.

Seche Vite: A lot of people love this and swear by it. It does dry pretty fast but you have to put a pretty thick coat on to cover your nail effectively and you have to work fast. MUST be applied to wet polish. For me, not worth the money.

Oh So Wet: Can be picked up at Sally's. Pretty fast drying. You can go to the bathroom after 30 minutes no worries. I like this and I would buy it again.

NYC Top coat (I think it's called Long wear or something...it's clear but not called Grand Central Station): This has all to down falls of a cheap top coat but it's 98 cents. It dries fast but it chips fast. If you have a mani that only needs to last one night this will work but if you're looking for long wear I'd stay away from this one.

Sally Hansen Insta-dri: Very comparable to Seche, but easier to use. MUST be applied to wet polish. Second favorite top coat. Love it.

Out the door: Also must be applied to wet polish. apandafunn pretty much covered this one.

RUSH top coat (I think it's by L.A. colors or L.A. girl): Online reviews of this one are misleading. THey say it isn't fast dry, but it is. The difference is that this one needs to be applied to DRY polish. If it is applied to dry polish it dries in under 10 minutes. It's great for revitalizing a mani that lost it's shine. I love to use it on the second day of a glitter mani, you know when the grittiness starts to come back. If you apply this to wet polish it has the same problems you're having with ulta's x-dry.

As for general ways to make your mani dry faster USE THIN COATS. This is my secret to everything and I can't stress it enough. I feel like I answer every problem with this but it does work magic.

Each thin coat will dry faster than thicker coats but use the same amount of polish. Opacity is opacity right? So even though you're spending more time painting (which is the fun part) you spend less time waiting for your mani to dry.

I hope this helps!

What nail polish brand are you willing to splurge for? by mwilso18in RedditLaqueristas

[–]nailphile 3 points4 points ago

As a poor college student, most of my polish is in the under $4 range. But I will splurge on Essie and some China Glaze (only a splurge at sally's). I would say the highest high-end brand I own is Zoya and I'm not a huge fan.

Someday I will get my hands on a Deborah Lippmann though...someday.

After 10 years of wearing gel/acrylic nails [NSFL] by Eunuch_Provocateurin RedditLaqueristas

[–]nailphile 2 points3 points ago

Strengthener and moisturize! Lots of both. Also it might help to keep them really short so they don't break.

If they were my nails I wouldn't even polish them because any chips or peeling will remove tiny layers of the nail.

Provocatively Dressed Middle Schooler by yarniclesin TwoXChromosomes

[–]nailphile 0 points1 point ago

I see a lot of "maybe it was because she's showing knee" comments. But maybe it's because of the "lowness" of her shit (which is not low cut at all). After I left my middle school they made a rule that girls' shirts has to be up to the collar bone. Dumb rule but maybe that was it.

Anyway this is an adorable outfit that is not inappropriate at all.

[–]nailphile 5 points6 points ago

If you have trouble with your glitter polish popping off like it's a fake nail, apply the first coat before your base coat is totally dry. Ever since I started doing this my glitters have become some of my longest lasting polishes.

Putting a holo or duochrome over black intensifies the effect...usually. The China Glaze Prismatics look so much more astonishing over black.

Want to revitalize a mani that's a couple days old? Put a layer of clear polish on then you can put your fast dry on the new, wet polish. DISCLAIMER: I don't use Seche so I don't know if it works for this.

So many things...

What is so interesting about having your hand in your pants?

Men always say it's easy to buy gifts for them, but it's not.

How can you spend so much time sleeping?

How can you spend so much time on the toilette?

Why do guys think it's ok to make fun of girls all the time for simple things?

Why do men think they're better drivers?

Why do guys have trouble listening or simply hearing?

There are a lot of others, but these are the ones I asked myself today.

Jenna Marbles covers a lot of the stuff I left out.

In my experience, 3 thin layers has been better. I get less chips and peeling that way. And because they're thinner, they dry faster.

I moisturize my cuticles like it's my job. Pretty much every time I sit down with a free minute I moisturize my cuticles.

The best advice I can give for strong healthy nails is file them properly.Always from the outter corners in. Never side to side which promotes breaking.

Try thin layers of polish. Also, don't let your polish dry all the way between coats. If everything is a little wet when you apply it, the polish will meld together nicely.

Matte topcoats aren't as durable as others. That's just the way it is.

Also, try not to bend your nail. Bending your nail makes your polish crack, split, and chip. Finally, make sure your nails are clean AND dry when you apply.

Hope this helps!

Is there any way to get an internship at a company that isn't really looking for interns? I understand this means unpaid.

I'm a cem major and we do a senior research project that is almost entirely ndependent (think directed study). Can I count that as a little bit of experience?

What's the best way to search for jobs? This might sound like a dumb question, but when I search I get 10 or sites listing the same jobs that are all an hour away from me, but I know companies in my town have to be hiring in my field. How do I find those?

How important is an advanced degree?

What should I say when I walk into an interview and they say "Tell me something abut yourself." This freaks me out and I don't want to blow an interview in the first five minutes.

How important is your GPA?

Sorry for all the questions. Also any tips on general ways to set yourself apart from other candidates?

Spice racks work well. Hunt for them at goodwill or similar stores. Then you can take them home and add your personal touches to make them pretty. Hang them on your wall and your polish is on display in cute little racks.

I don't know what made me think of this but what about a coozy with a handle? So it made your can like a mug.

Advantages?

It makes the can easier to hold. It keeps your drink cold. AND it keeps your hand from getting cold.

Table lamp with built-in book stand.

Arms wont get tired holding book. Son't hae to worry about poitioning with light. No harsh book light right in your face.

Or you could put clay in the bottom of some drawers (filing cabinet type thing). Youcould call it Form-N-Store or something. All you have to do is gently press your stuff into it and it stays put until you want it. No rummaging through drawers to find this or that anymore.

Just some random ass ideas I had. Also keep in mind anything becomes very marketable to girls as soon at it comes in pink, cheetah, or zebra.

Good luck!
