Getting started with R Markdown, knitr, and Rstudio 0.96: A new, powerful, open-source, and user-friendly way to perform reproducible data analysis. by mycatharsisin programming

[–]mycatharsis[S] 0 points1 point ago

To reiterate what jfredette wrote, at a basic level it is markdown, with extended support for tables and latex equations.

And then what makes It "R Markdown" is that it allows you to perform literate programming with R. As with most literate programming, there is some strange sequence of characters (a sequence that almost never occurs naturally) that demarcates normal markup from code chunks that are pre-processed by the programming language, which in this case is R.

I agree that if you are skilled at using Emacs ESS-mode and org-mode and all that, then RStudio might not appeal. However, there is something very nice about the way that RStudio just works well out of the box without customisation. Furthermore, even if I was using Vim or Emacs for many quick analyses I think R Markdown is a nice light weight option. Finally, I've been impressed at the rate at which improvements have been made in RStudio over recent releases.

Google shows its version of journals impact factor. If you click the number - you'll get top most referenced publications from this journal! by ampanmdagabain academicpublishing

I guess they pick up on different things.

h-index will reward journals that publish more articles, because there are more possible articles that can enter the h-index.

I like that Google uses a 5-year window rather than the typical 2-year window for impact factor. 5-years creates more reliability in measurement and also is less punishing on journals with longer citation half-lives.

If you're on Chrome check out this app on the chrome webstore. It goes to google scholar if on another page and uses the google search term in the scholar search where applicable.

Awesome. Is there anyway to make the button be a general google scholar bookmark when you are not on the google search page. I.e., when you're on google search, it goes to scholar with the same search term, but when not on google search, it just goes to the scholar home page.

This is not a good solution. With the scholar link, you could easily do a general search on main google search and then switch to Google scholar with the same search.

Which professional conferences / workshops have been most inspiring/helpful/your favorites? by unicornonthecobin AcademicPsychology

[–]mycatharsis 0 points1 point ago

As a broad statement, I've often got more out of small and focussed conferences (e.g., the kind with 80 or 100 people). Perhaps, surprising, I typically meet more new people; there's more socialisation; and I tend to get more out of the talks because they are in my area of interest.

How can I find psychology academics on Google Plus? by mycatharsisin AcademicPsychology

[–]mycatharsis[S] 0 points1 point ago

awesome; thanks. After posting, I started just following the link trail on a few people in my existing network. Some academics have mixed networks (i.e., where only a few people are of interest); others seem really focussed on having other academics in their network; So I guess it's also partially trial and error; I also imagine that people are more likely to follow back if you have a few shared colleagues.
