For you, PDF may be mainly for printing, but there are many other uses for it. That said, Adobe's stranglehold on the technology has made it one of the crappiest pieces of technology that doesn't allow it to work as it's intended. Acrobat is such an absolute piece of shit software though. Just as we could reinvent mail from the ground up and revolutionize written communication, I believe we should also be reinventing a portable (universal) document format that's open source and ISO compliant.

PDF is a file format, not paper. Converting to PDF is one way, if used correctly, to strip metadata from word processing docs which can be vital to lawyers.

Why is THIS point so damned low in the thread?! I mean one or two comments about size-then let's talk about how delicious this chocolate peanut butter ice cream must be. Seriously, we have a problem with diabetes, etc etc etc... But c'mon - more than halfway down the page to get to "thinking it's chocolate peanut butter"?! This is vital information!

Truth - this is my favorite ice cream flavor, but the absolute maximum I can eat of it or any ice cream is two scoops. And I have to be very, very melancholy to absorb that second scoop. The child that consumes this will first feel very happy for all the "love"... Then be very, very melancholy for perhaps the rest of their lives.

Frankly, you don't invite me.

What I mean is the marketing isn't geared towards me from the brochures to the experience once I'm there. It's the same reason PBS is struggling. Both PBS and most classical arts market to an audience that's very wealthy and very old. If a major portion of your advertising includes, "consider including us in your living trust," I know you don't want me in your audience.

If you want me there, be more accessible, nimble, unique, innovative, new, fresh, vibrant, and relevant. Make me want to come, not my dead grandparents. Surprise me.

Get young influential voices on your Board, ask the arts editor of your local alternative paper how to increase interest, run raffles on pop music stations to build curiosity. Imagine if you gave away tickets right after your target market hears their 20th Lady Gaga song of the day.

Once I'm there, make me feel welcome. I don't want to wait until the wealthy dowager in the box seats applauds to know its ok for me to. Don't give me lip at the door that I can't bring in my cocktail when I've just stood in line to get it. And be enthusiastic in your performance - if you don't show your passion for why you're playing a particular piece, I sure won't care about it either.

I'll go see Romeo and Juliet if I'm told it's a heartbreaking romance that will take my breath away, but I won't see Henry V because the performance is exquisite. Ultimately, I'll see something or buy something because it solves a problem I have. Access to arts is a click away now - access to a unique, one of a kind experience is worth my time, and money.
