This election is going to be awesome. I think he came out and said it because he has sized up his opposition for the coming election, and has realized that even if he openly supports gay marriage he will still win over the republicans candidate. I think it is also a good response to the republicans ultra-conservatism and will bring their religious bias to the forefront. It's also a great strategy to bring out the younger vote.
