I'd like the Korean bigmac please, I've even saved you the trouble of finding a cat.

You're offered $1 billion to cut-off your own hand, but you can only use the implements in the room you're currently in, and you only have one hour. Would you do it, and how would you do it? by lifeguardoflovein AskReddit

Knowing me, I'd cut off a foot before reading the fine print. Bitching the whole time that a nail file was a bad idea, then I'd beg for a million in consolation after.

Dude, commuting is no fun. Most of the cost difference between CU and CSM is in the cost of living. If you are living for free where you are at, by all means commute. That said, there are places in Superior / Broomfield area or even Gunbarrel / North Boulder where you can live for pretty cheap. Not Golden cheap, but pretty cheap.

In any case, if CU won't work for you, you can certainly still get yourself prepared for a career in IC while at Mines. Take up some side projects with FPGAs, or program a PIC to do something entertaining you can talk about in interviews, apply for internships at XILINX or TI, hell go for Intel and the rest while you are at it. Start thinking of senior projects which will give you an opportunity to showcase how well you can do with a group, while doing a lot of work.

One thing you should know, classes like signal processing and digital logic aren't electives at CU, classes like advanced compiler design and computational bioinformatics are - or at least they were while I was there. Mines might be convenient, but if I were you, I would seriously consider your options, even loans, to go to a school with a curriculum geared toward what you actually want to do.

Alternatively, if you are already looking at grad schools why not just pick a school with an active graduate student department - even one that isn't as great as CalTech or MIT and going for it. Face facts: if you can't afford to live in Boulder you can't afford to live in Boston or Pasadena either. You would be better off renting a cheap ass apartment an hour commute away from any college with an actual graduate student program and building a positive relationship with some professors who will be able to write letters of recommendation, or even invite you to join their graduate programs than having to build those relationships from scratch.

Good luck, hope it works out dude.

Hi Loomy7! I was exactly where you are, not kidding. I was a sophomore at Mines, looking to get into IC awesomeness. I cannot say what I did is the best, but it has worked out for me. I transfered to CU. Boulder is a touch more expensive, but their EE / ECE program is better and there will be better prospects coming out of CU than School of Mines if you are looking for work in IC (at least from my experience, this was 2003, perhaps things have changed).
If you want to work as an EE working on big motors for a municipality, or work in power systems in general - stay at Mines. They will have no problem setting you up with a job in that area. If you want to work in integrated circuits, I recommend moving to CU.
Of course, this is all assuming you are in state at CSM. Also, if you do take this advice please ensure you know your transcript up and down for your transfer advisor. PM if you need the names of some EE prof's at CU to talk to before making any big decisions.

A skeleton crawled out of my closet and asked me to attend his wedding. The skeleton is a multiply-convicted sex offender and child rapist. He's also my brother. What do I do? by Tase_Me_Broin AskReddit

[–]mrgatorboy 2 points3 points ago

Probably too late, but I really hope you get to see this. You absolutely must make sure his wife to be has a complete and total understanding of what your brother has done. If you only write a letter and leave it at that, she may not understand.
Do you know with absolute certainty that she is fully aware of what he as done? If not, you have an obligation to make absolutely sure that his future wife knows. It may not be easy, it may not be what you want to do, but he will abuse again and you need to make sure that she is aware of that fact.
I am truly sorry you are in this situation, and wish you all the strength and support in the world for whatever you choose to do. That said, please do everything in your power to make sure he never gets the opportunity to abuse again. She has to know.

A question for all of you by [deleted]in environment

[–]mrgatorboy 5 points6 points ago

Don't worry if you are a bit nihilistic, don't worry that you may have difficulty staying positive. Look, humans may never be able to cope with the severe environmental devastation which we are inflicting on our planet. But don't worry about the environment as a whole: life, frogs, bees, the plastic in the ocean, the whole world is going to be just fine. Continue to be the best steward of the earth as you possibly can, because it is worth it. Not for some future value to humanity, not because it has any inherent value, but purely because it feels better to take good care of the world around you.
Continue to recycle, garden and volunteer - please don't get too anxious or emotional over whether or not its "worth it" in some crazy objective sense. Making the world a better place is a worthy cause, it doesn't matter one bit if anything gets "fixed". Recycling, gardening and volunteering are awesome no matter what.
Its good to have goals - but don't get attached to "fixing" the world dude.

Obama’s Second-Term Taxes by carolhra7in obama

[–]mrgatorboy 1 point2 points ago

Oh my. Won't someone please think of those making more than a quarter million dollars a year! A clearly diabolical scheme to reduce the deficit with a progressive tax structure, for shame! Marginal tax rates on America's highest earners could rise by as much as 5% to help pay for the bush tax cuts, the Iraq war, and the bailout executed under G W Bush's presidency. How dare he think about such things we he had a majority in congress and he never put forth such a plan, holding on to it for his obviously guaranteed second term knowing that the temporary republican majority would surely lead to a resurgence in democrats in both houses, inevitably leading to a filibuster proof majority in both houses allowing him to pass whatever he pleases in his second term.
