I had to attend a Unemployment Seminar today to keep my unemployment benefits. I really need to vent due to the advice given. It was horrible. by Athrowawayfortodayin self

[–]mrdm242 6 points7 points ago

I had to attend one of these once. I believe people in my state are just randomly chosen to attend, and not mandated to because they are in a "dying field." My experience wasn't nearly as horrific as the OP. Although I didn't really find the presentation that useful, I couldn't certainly see how it could be for people unskilled at putting together a resume or finding the tools online to look for jobs.

At the end of the talk we all had to meet with a counselor one-on-one so they could take a look at our resumes and offer suggestions. The woman looking at mine liked it so much she asked for a copy of it to use as an example, which made me feel good. It wasn't too much later I was able to land a job and get off of unemployment anyway.

That wasn't even remotely funny.

Was almost run over by this TriMet driver just now. She then started to honk, and yell at me for trying to cross at a marked crosswalk. by niewinskiin Portland

For as much money as these drivers make, they better take their jobs damn seriously.

Personal anecdotes are far less labor intensive. No investigation required!

I'm sure a lot of people with this viewpoint see MAX as a waste of taxpayer money and this supposed "crime enabler" angle provides a convenient way to push for de-funding.

Good catch! Maybe I haven't been paying close enough attention.

I think Ron's goal is just to do as little as possible because he's a government-hating Libertarian. I don't really see his character as an introvert per se.

Moving to Portland! Tell me about some great neighborhoods to live in. by DingDogin Portland

[–]mrdm242 0 points1 point ago

This should probably be a sticky topic, as it comes up quite frequently. If you do a google search, I'm sure you can find innumerable threads started on this very question.

That being said, probably the most popular answer is going to be "SE Portland, west of 82nd street."

Ad.ver.sary calls out Nachtmahr and Combichrist for racism/sexism. Thoughts, /r/industrialmusic? by shlockvaluein industrialmusic

[–]mrdm242 6 points7 points ago

I enjoy Combichrist quite a bit, and think Andy is a talented musician. The stuff he comes up with is almost always undeniably catchy--which is impressive considering how prolific he is. That being said, Combichrist's lyrics are ridiculously bad and obviously written to be offensive and shocking. Anyone who takes this stuff seriously is quite frankly a moron.

This is akin to blaming violent video games for some kid's criminal behavior. Artists should not have to tone down their art just because some jackass takes it too seriously.

Introverts, can we talk about searching for jobs? by BlueAndFuzzyin introvert

[–]mrdm242 1 point2 points ago

Just to put out a different perspective: in my experience, companies are just as concerned with finding someone likable as they are finding someone qualified to do the job. It may serve you well to promote yourself as some kind of ultra-serious, no-nonsense type of worker, but you run the risk of painting yourself as a humorless loner who isn't suited for a teamwork-oriented environment. Often times interviewers will ask you about your family or hobbies, so make sure to be as pleasant as possible and come up with some interesting stories to tell about yourself. Smile, and be polite!
