TIL that the American sports industry is worth $422 billion, and employs about 1% of the population by dejatooin todayilearned

[–]mrchen 11 points12 points ago

The article you cite and the chart inside the article disregards a lot of things that are connected to the sports industry. Take for one the thousands of local bars, restaurants, hotels, etc that are all centrally planned around a sports stadium. These bars and restaurants are all supplied by farmers, breweries, and etc to produce raw material for them to use in an ordinary day of business. You can basically regress all the way back to infinite degrees and realize that the point that the article is trying to prove is erroneous. Also consider the fact that many cities use sports stadiums as an excuse to hire and create work/labor through local government programs, which also ultimately becomes a major source of tax revenue for cities. Sports teams also become a very large factor in the tourism industry for any given town which affects a whole other marketplace.

Why don't we look at these numbers in terms of how many people the video game industry directly employs and what the industry profits are? The numbers would probably be pretty damn similar to sports

Do people really know so little about guns [crosspost from r/guns] by wizgotin funny

[–]mrchen 0 points1 point ago

they're not going for realism and accuracy in this ad. They just want to show to the consumer that they are clearly looking at a bullet, which most people can only identify with the shell and jacket still on the bullet. OP is just trying to show off his purported knowledge about firearms.

One thing I still don't get about technology... by kentarorin gaming

[–]mrchen 0 points1 point ago*

An Xbox 360 has over 300 (300 is an erroneous number I'm just using it to argue right now) more components than an SNES or a 90's walkman. It would be silly to think that you will still get the same kind of longevity out of a piece of equipment that has 300 more possible ways to fail than a very basic console with only a few components to it. You want better graphics and full stereo sound, you got it, but it comes at a price.

It would be the same argument if I were comparing my SNES to a rock; my trusty old rock never froze on me, and I never had to blow on the rock to make it work.

History has a way of filtering out the bullshit and only carrying forward what was actually great and influential. case in point: Donny Osmund has 12 albums that charted on the Billboard top 200 between 1970 and 1990, the era during your proposed "better era of pop music."

We are very far from a '1984' police-state culture... Try Paris, 1943. the USA in 2012 doesn't even come close.

I can also confirm that this song gets consistent radio play here in Chicago.

I mean this question with the most tact and respect, but do you ever think in your mind that your writing these guides takes away and detracts from some of the mystery and fun that game devs had in mind/ intended for the gamer to figure out on their own?

Paris, one hundred years from now. by EvilCyborg10in pics

Paris has a pretty rich history and has been around for too long for people not to hold it up on a sort of pedestal. Infact, there is even a medical condition coined "Paris Syndrome" that involves this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_syndrome

[–]mrchen 1 point2 points ago

Somebody can correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believe Paris has very tight laws and restrictions over what kinds of buildings can be built, especially those around the Eiffel tower. They are very concerned with preserving the skyline and making sure that Paris continues to look surreal/ romantic.

Paper Lions gets fed up with not being paid for their Album, Releases for free. by effinboyin Music

[–]mrchen 1 point2 points ago

It is possible that they were shafted and got a bad record deal, but It's also very possible that the record label has simply yet to recoup all of it's losses on the cost of the album.

Bands have to start understanding the business end of music if they actually want to make this their living. Record Labels always recover the cost of their expenses INCLUDING the advance cash that they gave you from sales before they start writing royalty checks. Even then, they tend to hold off as long as possible until they cut the check for accounting purposes. You won't be seeing any royalties until they themselves are in the black, it makes sense, and it's only fair. so stop bitching and learn how to read.

TIL that in early Nazi Germany, bouncers in underground jazz clubs were also hired to screen for Nazi spies, because jazz was considered a "degenerate" form of music by the Nazi party by white_eaglein todayilearned

[–]mrchen 12 points13 points ago

They hated jazz music because of it's African American roots. This is the reason why Paris and Parisians became so hip to jazz music; it became a form of open rebellion and a sign of distaste against the occupation of the Third Reich in France. After the war when bebop artists arrived at paris they were treated like royalty.

1926 Chicago bank converted into a bar and restaurant. Complete with lounge in the vault. by usernameblankin pics

[–]mrchen 1 point2 points ago

It's possible but in order to actually turn it into a proper recording studio drastic things would have to be done; a good studio can have no parallel walls and must be insulated with acoustic foam on the ground and corners to prevent unwanted reverb and standing waves. With everything else said and done it wouldn't look like a bank vault at all. The truth hurts.

FOLLOW UP

Thanks for everybody who has been discussing and raising awareness of the video, It wasn't hard to find these little punks seeing as one of them was dumb enough to show his face, that was all it took, but it was still necessary to have the video go viral to be the catalyst. We got everybody from Mayer Rahm, to Vinnie (Jersey Shore) to speak about it! One by one they are being arrested and detained for questioning. This was in no small part thanks to the Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, and even 4chan community for expressing their total and utter outrage at this video.

edit: Yes, The water is not entirely clear on the motives/intentions, but what's important is that the suspects are detained and the context of the situation can be properly assessed

The Funkiest songs you know? by b452in Music

[–]mrchen 1 point2 points ago

IMO the keyboards define what the tune is all about. Herbie was making a tangent off of Bitches Brew where he originally played a Mk II Rhodes, which he hated at first but Miles insisted that he played.

There are several keyboards Herbie is using, and this tune has historical precedence in jazz music with Herbies use of an ARP synth to play the bass line and lead melody, He's also got a D6 Clavinet and a fender Rhodes. Herbie said he chose to use synths and keyboards because he was trying to emulate an electric guitar via something like Jimi Hendrix. He wanted something that he could stack all kinds of fuzz and wah pedals on. I wouldn't consider it a "fake" sound, just because its electronically produced; calling it fake would imply there is a "real" sound which is an impossible term to define.
