The trick is to remember it without reliving it. The article I read said the best way to get over that "horrible and inexcusable social faux pas" you committed all those years ago is to have a few drinks and just tell someone the story. Like in bring a buddy over, either tell them before hand or not what you're doing, and just unload.

Funny thing is that it totally fucking works! According to that article by retelling the story you rewrite the actual memory, therefore if you can laugh about it now it takes away the extreme emotional baggage. Apparently it's what some psychologists are doing with vets.
