Thank you for saying this. SO much of what makes up this post is pure cultural constructions and not any kind of fact. Some of it is just complete bullshit. Since when is it a fact that yellow bedrooms make babies more prone to crying? Half of this sounds like old wives tales and the other is exactly what you said, socially constructed.

I think that is a great place to start. I have a few super introductory projects that they can experiment with for self discovery (kids are given a slamm lightbulb, batteries, wires and electrical tape, they have to figure out how to light the lightbulb and write observations about brightness vs number of lightbulbs/number of batteries etc.). I would really like a big final project that the whole class could collaborate on.

Grade level should be around 5th grade but if it is above that it is fine. I can devote hours of class time. If the activity is strong enough I can integrate other subjects into it and potentially devote entire days to a project.

As a teacher, I recommend starting with young adult fiction. I'm not talking about teen books, I mean YA. Authors like Sandra Cisneros, Neil Gaiman, books like the Harry potter series, or The Hunger Games. those are great examples of books that will get you reading quickly because of their simple syntax (with the exception of Neil Gaiman), good but contextually underrstood vocabulary, and strong plot. I saw some Kurt Vonnegut on the list above, I would recommend Bluebeard if you want to begin an adventure into that territory. It is a fun, interesting, and ultimately moving novel that would be great for many readers.

The best way to improve schools is to make teachers into learners. Send them back to school to improve their knowledge base and then when they come back to the classroom, they should be allowed to be professionals. Take out canned curriculum and high stakes tests.
