What I find amazing is that more than 75% of suicide victims are sober.

Fair enough on skepticism; I could well be wrong. But why wouldn't a new attendance policy make its way into the inner cities? The study for improving schools was commissioned by the state governor, not leaders in just one area or type of district. Statewide policies affect every district whether it's rural, urban, suburban, etc. Teachers/administrators did fight a lot of the changes.

I do know for fact that Perot cited rodeo/stock shows as one problem -- I remember that he mentioned it fairly often. He also described a lot of other areas of improvement though, so maybe one of those other factors was a driving force as well.

ps. Go to a livestock show sometime! Houston has a great one. Fort Worth too. :-)

Sorry, I wasn't being clear -- No Pass No Play was not about rodeo/livestock shows. It was primarily about football. A lot of his recommendations were about football, and a lot of them didn't fly.

And you're right that Zero Tolerance WAS based on the war on drugs. That didn't start until quite a bit later though, and didn't start in TX.

The only policy that I am saying came from Perot's observations of kids missing too many days for stock shows was the new, more strict required number of full days in school. Even if you pass all of your classes, if you are out half the year touring with your prize goat, you shouldn't be able to go to the next grade.

I'm trying to find a copy online of the full report he delivered and his recommendations. We studied it some in my Texas government class in college, but it's been a long time since then so of course my memory could be failing me.

Keep in mind how huge and diverse the state is...

I'm looking for a better source than this http://www.nytimes.com/1992/06/29/us/1992-campaign-shaking-schools-when-perot-took-texas-special-report-education.html?pagewanted=all&src=pm

It was part of Perot's education reform findings. Of course the other big thing he attacked was football... That didn't go over well, but he did get No Pass, No Play.

Can we help this girl? Is there a Reddit college scholarship fund or something??

I was in Texas when this started to be implemented. It started because huge numbers of kids were missing most of the year to travel and show their rodeo animals (=big prize money, scholarships, etc). Their schools werent discouraging it because kids learn a lot from rodeo and it is part of the culture in some places. So the state tied schools' funding to the number of days each student was present -- and kids have to be there a certain percentage of the day or it doesn't count.

Thanks. :-) Yeah, he has seen the videos and instead of taking them as precautionary he thought they were AWESOME. Nine year old boy. He bought mineral oil to keep reactive things in. He built his own glovebox out of cardboard once... ha, I had forgotten about that actually.

Im afraid the Radioactive Boyscout will only get him more excited about dangerous stuff. I think the problem is he assumes that if people hurt themselves it's because they weren't doing things safely -- and of course HE would do things safely. But his mean mother (me) still says no to sodium for now.

Dog flips out and barks at my girlfriend every time she leaves the house in the morning... by MercyMedicalin Dogtraining

[–]miparasito 1 point2 points ago

This worked beautifully with a dog I had once who would flip out over leaving. He would become frantic when we started getting shoes on and would basically throw a tantrum when we left. So on the advice of a trainer I put mind-blowingly tempting treats in his crate right before we started getting ready to go... but I locked the crate door so he couldn't get to the chewbone or kong etc. The LAST thing we did on our way out the door was open the crate and put him in. This new routine did a few things:

  1. Totally distracted him during my get-ready-to-go routine, which used to stress him out

  2. Made him BEG to go IN the crate instead of me struggling to convince him to go in

  3. Associated us leaving with awesome

  4. Gave him a few minutes of something to do after we left so he wouldn't start crying

4month old GSD bites everyone and everything. Mom is thinking of giving him away. Help? by joncrimsonin Dogtraining

[–]miparasito 3 points4 points ago

Is he playing? This sounds totally normal. In fact, I think there was someone asking for advice on this exact thing with a GSD mix just last week.

My dog is a lab mix, and in every way she is an amazing, absolutely perfect pet... NOW. But she was very mouthy when we got her at 9 months. She constantly tried to chew on everyone's hands. It was like she was just SO excited and overwhelmed by how much she loved you that she had to bite. She is a year and a half now and goodness, she has settled in to being amazing.

Honestly, most puppies are obnoxious! Every breed has something it does as a puppy that oh my god makes you wonder WTF you were thinking getting a dog. But if you are careful not to reward the behavior that you don't like, it will improve.

I've heard that Texas reminds Australians of home more than other states -- might be better test than Seattle?

I don't understand how they are junk food. I learn about big topics that have shifted my worldview, the talks I've seen have affected the way I approach problems and the way I run my business. Learning about the extent of the human trafficking that still goes on, or what is on the horizon for cancer patients, or seeing the creative process at work -- how is that equal to watching dancing cats?
