One week of bottle conditioning; tested and got a little gusher. by workersRgoinghomein Homebrewing

[–]mikestraussjr 8 points9 points ago

Not sure why you got downvoted, this is the correct answer. Creating CO2 takes a lot less time than it takes for the gas to dissolve evenly into the beer. OP, your bottles are doing fine, they just need more time. Also, make sure you keep them in the fridge for at least 24 hours before you open them, that will help the gas dissolve into the beer.

Dear fans who attend Flyers home games: by mikestraussjrin Flyers

I just realized everyone here thinks I'm a Devils fan, sorry for the confusion. I love the Flyers, but sometimes I hate the way our fans support the team when we're losing.

My predictions for the playoffs, of course the Fly Guys are winning it all. by rabbit_trousersin Flyers

[–]mikestraussjr 6 points7 points ago

Nitpicking here, but in your Western semis, the Canucks would be matched against the Blackhawks, and the Blues against Nashville. Teams keep their seed number throughout the playoffs, and highest always plays lowest.

I agree with your East predictions though...GO FLYERS!

Of course, it's company policy never to imply ownership in the event of a dildo. We have to use the indefinite article, "a" dildo, never "your" dildo.

Every single item that was introduced in 1976, disintegrated in 1976 and never had a chance to exist at all after that.

Could low fermentation temp cause high carbonation? by stachistin Homebrewing

[–]mikestraussjr 2 points3 points ago

Get them as cold as you possibly can without freezing, then open them. More of the CO2 will dissolve at lower temperatures, which could decrease your chances of gushers.

What size stopper for a 1L Erl Flask? by RufusMcCootin Homebrewing

[–]mikestraussjr 0 points1 point ago

This. If you're using it for a yeast starter, a foam stopper is probably the best solution. An airtight rubber stopper with an airlock doesn't allow oxygen to get to the yeast, they need it to reproduce and increase their numbers. Foil or foam help keep the nasties out while still allowing oxygen in.

Longneck Bottles? by refarisin Homebrewing

[–]mikestraussjr 0 points1 point ago

I'm confused...are Corona bottles shaped any differently from regular brown industry-standard longneck bottles? If so, why are you using them; is it just a cosmetic thing?

Well...this certainly never happened before! by tranksamillionin Homebrewing

Always give Wyeast a few hours minimum at room temperature after you break the internal packet; that's the primary reason why they put it in there! No swell = bad yeast. I hope your batch turns out!

Long-term bottle conditioning question...Is horizontal ok? by ChompyChompin Homebrewing

[–]mikestraussjr 1 point2 points ago

Yes, always keep bottle-conditioned beers upright. Nobody wants to drink a beer with a yeast-ring on the side of the bottle.

Why not save space by keeping the bottles inside stackable plastic tote containers? More bottles per square foot, and it will stay nice and dark and add another layer of temperature stability.

Hitting 1.056 like a boss on my first lager. by warowordsin Homebrewing

[–]mikestraussjr 2 points3 points ago

Nope, it's definitely closer to 1.058. It's a little misleading when floating a hydrometer. In science class we were told to read the meniscus, not the level at the edge of the vessel; the meniscus in this case is not the high point that contacts the hydrometer, it's actually the low point between the hydrometer wall and the tube wall. The meniscus is concave, not convex, the point at which you read the measurement is the bottom of the meniscus, not the top.

Help please, the weather made me skip a step. by Fallengodin Homebrewing

For the most part, everything that's going to come out of those hops has already come out in the boil. They won't contribute anything more by sitting in the carboy during fermentation.

fermentation done already or yet to start? by KineticSolutionin Homebrewing

[–]mikestraussjr 0 points1 point ago

It's fine, and it's not done fermenting. Let it go for a couple weeks and resist the urge to open the lid. If you really need confirmation to keep yourself from going insane over it, crack the seal on the bucket lid just to let the pressure out, then seal it back up right away. The middle of the 3-piece airlock will drop back down when you open the lid, then after a few hours you'll see it raise back up from the building CO2 pressure inside.

So is there a reason yeast is pitched on the surface and not stirred in? by NuclearWookiein Homebrewing

[–]mikestraussjr 0 points1 point ago

And don't worry about losing some cells to the container. They have a better chance of reproducing quickly if they're rehydrated and activated before you force-feed them.

Quit giving this guy a hard time. He took two things and mashed them together to make something new that hasn't been done before, that's creative enough in my book.
