So I came out of the Buddhist closet earlier this week by cewllguyin Buddhism

[–]metallicirony 11 points12 points ago

OP, I hope you take some time to consider abores comments.

Saying the same thing from a slightly different perspective:

Buddhism is about shedding the clinging to "I", to let go this "I am XXXX", "I am Christian", "I am Buddhis", "I am I am" - this is exactly what Buddhism asks us to overcome.

Look around you with compassion, what can you do for the beings around you to alleviate their suffering? As to your parents, they might be worried about their reputation, and of course they cannot understand how come their teachings did not reach you, they might be feeling that this is a challenge from God etc, try to be considerate and see things from their perspective, do your best to make it as easy for them as possible.

There was a point in time where if I were at a Christian gathering and there was prayer I would not participate, then I realized that was just me clinging to my own pride, me and my ego. Nowadays, I happily bow my head, of course since I do not believe in supernatural powers, I take the opportunity to give thanks for all that I am fortunate to have and meditate, and when the time comes to say Amen I join in as enthusiastically as anyone else. It's just words, do not cling to them any more or any less than that.

Buddhism asks us to consider what REALLY matters? I suggest that what REALLY matters is that you continue to study Buddhism and understand and experience it, and declaring your new belief/identity and evangelism are actions that are not encouraged in Buddhism.

Try to observe and learn from every single being around you, try to see the good side of everyone and pick those up, and as for the bad side, be understanding that other people might have different circumstances, but take it as a reminder to yourself to be a better person. Criticize less, use compassion more, try to make everyday a little bit better for everyone around you.

But the way I see it:

Quadratic Question - 25y^2 +25 - 36 = 0 by Dan2188in learnmath

[–]metallicirony 0 points1 point ago

You're very welcome! Sometimes we all need a little prod in the right direction =D

Quadratic Question - 25y^2 +25 - 36 = 0 by Dan2188in learnmath

[–]metallicirony 1 point2 points ago

Yup, Well done! Correct method, slightly long winded though, nothing wrong with a slightly longer way except the risk of making careless mistakes.

Here's the same thing with shorter steps, starting with the same starting point as you:

36 / (y+1) = (36 / y) - 25

Now multiply both sides by y, giving:

(36y) / (y+1) = 36 - 25y

Now multiply both sides by (y+1), giving:

36y = 36(y+1) - 25y(y+1)

Multiplying into the brackets:

36y = 36y + 36 - 25y2 - 25y

Cancelling 36y on both sides:

0 = -25y2 -25y + 36

Trivially moving everything over you get your answer. =)

Quadratic Question - 25y^2 +25 - 36 = 0 by Dan2188in learnmath

[–]metallicirony 1 point2 points ago

To be pedantic, the way you wrote B is not correct, but I think you have the right idea, but just to make sure:

B) should be written as:

36 / (y+1) = Number of Big Bottles

The way the parentheses are used is important =)

Quadratic Question - 25y^2 +25 - 36 = 0 by Dan2188in learnmath

[–]metallicirony 0 points1 point ago

Everything was good up to so far so good =)

(36 / y - 1) = (36 / y) + 25

This is not correct, be careful, and try to formulate this relationship again. You're thinking along the right lines now tho.

[–]metallicirony 0 points1 point ago*

Your step from 2 to 2b is wrong, can you see why, now that I point it out?

Lets break it into a series of subquestions:

A) How many small bottles does Jim get for $36?

B) How many big bottles does Jim get for $36?

Work out these 2 parts separately first.

[–]metallicirony 1 point2 points ago

Hi there, the quadratic equation is just a coincidental red herring. This question is not a question about factoring quadratic equations.

It is about formulating the correct equation that reflects the relationship between the parameters.

Now I don't want to finish your homework for you straightaway, so let me give you some guidance:

(Just to get things out of the way, you have copied the question correctly and the answer is correct)

Think about it this way:

What is the word question trying to tell you?

Try to formulate an equation that reflects this statement:

Jim spends $36 dollars on small bottles and receives 25 more bottles than spending $36 on large bottles.

So how many small bottles does Jim get for $36? -- Let this be Fragment A

How many big bottles does Jim get for $36? Let this be Fragment B

What is the relationship between Fragment A and Fragment B?

It will be important to show your working.

Try this, and if you need further guidance feel free to reply to my post =)

A Tourist's View (mine): Malaysia's potentially beautiful landscape is ruined with all the litter - seemingly everywhere throughout Malaysia. Why doesn't anyone do anything about it? by MissingInAsiain malaysia

Singapore is the best example of what Malaysia should at least be.

Yet it doesn't have any of our natural resources, and its Chinese language literacy is much lower thanks to a Speak English policy instituted one generation ago, something which Lee Kuan Yew himself regrets.

Do not forget Malaysia is not only Peninsula Malaysia but also has Sabah and Sarawak.

Singapore is wonderful, it gave me ASEAN scholarship to NUS, and I am grateful for the opportunity, but I can't help but wonder why Malaysia can't emulate it, when I believe it has the potential to outdo it.

Sadly we have been through this so many times that I know you're quite certainly right.

Today Guilin is truly a beautiful place and very clean.

Actually at a deeper level, I think what is needed is for our people to be proud of our country as whole, and to love our country, especially our leaders, not just look at this land as a virgin to be raped and plundered for selfish benefits, but as a home where every member of the family should do his and her part in upkeep.

I think this sense of pride will solve our problems at all levels, it will not only make our nation literally cleaner, it will also create a cleaner political, economic and social climate.

I always wonder wistfully about our country, it is truly beautiful, geographically strategic and safe, and its plural culture is truly a great asset, what other nation can so easily and fluently trade with all the other great economic powers in the world, simply because its people speaks the language of all the emerging and established superpowers? And then located strategically in the middle of their shipping and trading paths?

O Malaysia, what will it take to realize thy true potential.

Many years ago, Guilin in China was a very dirty city, similar to Malaysia today. One time, Bill Clinton visited Guilin. He commented, "Guilin is like a beautiful lady, only dressed in rags." The government and people of Guilin were so embarassed that they immediately started a beautification project, and also worked hard to cultivate civic awareness.

Maybe Malaysia needs Bill Clinton to give us a scolding.

The right thing to do is pay for the work done and ask for amendments if some slight tweaking will do.

What does the Umlaut over the Theta mean (notationally) in the matrix in the diagram? by CptAhmadKnackwurstin learnmath

Thanks so much for the clarification. Me being sloppy as usual. Strictly speaking a derivative is meaningless without specifying the parameter =)

What does the Umlaut over the Theta mean (notationally) in the matrix in the diagram? by CptAhmadKnackwurstin learnmath

[–]metallicirony 10 points11 points ago

The theta indicates the angle, a single dot above theta indicates first derivative of the angle, which would give the angular velocity, a double dot (umlaut), indicates second derivative of the angle, which would give angular acceleration.

Visiting Msia for one month, looking for good mobile service (3G calls/data) by ilovewatermelonin malaysia

[–]metallicirony 1 point2 points ago

There are three major carriers, Maxis, Digi and Celcom. They do sell prepaid phone cards that can be bundled with data plans so I think thats what you should get.

Either of them should be fine but I am slightly partial to Celcom, which will be a lifesaver in the Borneo states if you do travel there as other carriers have piss poor coverage over there.

Tethering to your ipad and laptop etc is not an issue at all.

Customer service at all three telcos are pretty shitty buyt you shouldnt really need it if you can read and follow the simple instructions in the brochure.

the objective of buddhist practice to release ones clinging to ego, and to acknowledge that it is transient and illusory.

release from clinging however is not the same as renunciation.
