The Lawnmower Mystery by Cpt_Mangoin AskEngineers

It will favor the shortest path with the least resistance but will take any and all paths open to it regulated by resistance. "Shortest path" isn't bull it's just misunderstood by the masses.

Thinking about buying a scooter and need some serious help by anyrehrin scooters

[–]meangrampa 1 point2 points ago

Chinese bikes are problematic because the manufactures have poor quality control and many bad electronic parts get by. I've fixed new ones that wouldn't run out of the crate because of bad electronics.

They're engines are designed mimicking a Honda Gy6 engine. It's a great engine to mimic. I and many others think one of the best. But when they make the parts not as much care is taken and issues can arise from this substandard work. Used ones have had the initial electronic bugs fixed, BUT the engines are suspect because of these substandard parts. Not that many of these knock off engines make it to 20000 miles and most of those that do are blowing blue smoke.

Taiwanese bikes are made better. Though some of their engines are based on the Gy6 better care is taken making the parts and those parts are overall of a better quality. Their electronics are good and problems are low. With great quality control in their factory's. This level of quality is going to cost more and it's why a new Kymco is 4+ times the price of a new Wangye.

I'm a mechanic I try to discourage people from buying Chinese bikes because they break down more than bikes made elsewhere. Leaving the rider stationary by the side of the road. I have seen some of these Chinese bikes run relatively problem free but that's RARE.

I understand the price is tempting but unless you're a mechanic you will have to pay someone to fix it. The replacement parts aren't all that expensive but shop time is expensive. If you're a mechanic and want to buy one no matter the warnings I recommend a Tao Tao. They're the best of the lot of Chinese bikes in my book.

I've heard that a lot of people sit in the same seat every day on the Commuter Rail. I'm going to be commuting on the Fitchburg line a few days a week, what's the best way to avoid taking someone's seat and should I expect to be yelled at if I do? by Parcanmanin boston

[–]meangrampa 1 point2 points ago

Just sit wherever you like. This isn't middle school and there are no saved seats. The ones that seem to sit in the same spots all the time realize this. Or I at least hope they do. No one will ask you to give up your seat because it's "theirs". Anyone that tries to tell you that it's "Their seat" is delusional and in need of help.

You might be able to get some design help through one of the many astronomy clubs in the US. Find one near you with this http://find.mapmuse.com/interest/astronomy-clubs It is a search you can customize to find clubs and observatories.

The astronomy club near me has a lot of experienced people that would be willing to help build a new telescope. It's what they love to do. I'm guessing that any astronomy club you find near you will have some like minded people.

Dishwasher Not Draining; pump works... no hose blockages by Echo5iveDeltain fixit

[–]meangrampa 0 points1 point ago

"Finish" and "Jet Dri " both sell a dishwasher cleaner that should remove the scale. Consider getting and using one of these first as it could be just scale build up on the pump.

It could be he pump isn't moving the water efficiently enough, so it's not completing it's task before the cycle timer ends. Or It could be a fault of the cycle timer. I'd replace the pump first. Though I would look into the cost of both of these parts before replacing them. Just to see if it's worth just replacing the entire unit instead.too.

Non-programmer/non-sysadmin Linux users: tell us your story! Why do you use Linux, and to what extent? by dizzy_lizzyin linux

[–]meangrampa 0 points1 point ago

No and I've never heard of "the heliOS project before. I'm in the Boston area and there might be a project like that here. I'll look into it.

I just do it because I hate to see these machines go to waste when there is a need for them. The tipping point for me was when I went to my friends town recycling yard and saw dozens of these old computers. They're were charging $25 to throw them out and most of them still worked. There are people like me all over the US that do this on our own. I don't do that many either, perhaps a dozen a year and I'm leery of making a commitment to do many more than that. Just because they're heavy to move.

Non-programmer/non-sysadmin Linux users: tell us your story! Why do you use Linux, and to what extent? by dizzy_lizzyin linux

[–]meangrampa 7 points8 points ago

I rebuild a lot of older junk computers and recycle the left over bits. Then I give them away to low income kids and seniors. I do make a few higher end ones from stuff I get from the gamer's that're upgrading to give to low income students. But there's never enough of those to fill the need. Not even close. But that's another story.

I load Ubuntu on most, Pinguy for the seniors, so I don't have to go there much to service them and can do it from home. And the young kids get Qimo on top of Ubuntu as a dual boot that I teach the parents.

This would be next to impossible to do with Windows unless I were to pirate the software or load something antiquated. Linux fills the bill and I can load these boxes with confidence. Knowing that they'll take a minimum of further service from me. That would be absolutely not be the case if I were to load almost anything else. The people that I deal with mostly are not the least bit computer literate and these programs have the simplicity for them to jump right in after a cursory instruction. And are complex enough to help them learn when they gain more knowledge. No one calls me because their computer got infected with a virus with Linux. Before I switched to Linux fixing viruses and malware was the number one issue that I spent most of my time on. Now I rarely touch a windows computer and anytime I have to it is to make sure it is protected or I'm removing a virus/malware.

Linux rocks and makes my life easier.

Any tips on making crispy cucumber pickles? by Hamsterdamin Canning

[–]meangrampa 2 points3 points ago

I use a two grape leaves in each jar of my dills. and If I get to pick them early enough with enough to make a batch I leave the ends on the spears. Though the leaves seem to help when making chips also. I have used pickling lime too and my grandmother used it. But it still scares me a bit. I know this fear is baseless when using it properly. But I won't give them out and eat them all. The ones with the leaves I give out. Lime makes them snap when you bite them.

The card is broken and the entire card needs to be replaced. it's good to try the source first http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.contact

Give them a call It might not be under warranty but they'll direct you to someone that can do the work. Or may even ship you the part. It's worth a try.

Edit; Pay per minute is for tech support; there are no additional charges for calling to order replacement parts. If you want to order the parts and repair the device yourself, you would only pay for the cost of the parts and shipping.

Fridge not working... by sdfsdfdsfsdfdsin fixit

[–]meangrampa 2 points3 points ago

There are a multitude of things that could be wrong with it and zjunk is right. This is a good start. If the refrigerator was opened a lot or the freezer door was left slightly ajar it could be just frost in the air channel. If this doesn't fix it there are a few other things you could try/change. But test this first. Then swap the bulb to a known good one and see if the socket has power.

What the hell is this thing called, and can it have that big of a gap around it? by rahtinin fixit

[–]meangrampa 0 points1 point ago

Might be. But it's just filler so anything inert will do. Newspaper most people have it on hand or you can grab one of those Real Estate flyer's for free. You could fill it with some "Great Stuff" insulation in a can too. But that can get messy and does not come off anything ever.So I never recommend it for anything but filling cracks in unfinished basements or filling voids during renovations.

The handshake refusal is a minimum amount of bandwidth i'm sure. But it does exist so it will be counted on your total bandwidth used. There are a lot of reasons why this whole idea is a bad one. It's not going to encourage infrastructural improvements and it's just a means to wring more money out of the consumer without giving any added services.

It doesn't matter. Sites make money by posting ads. So you pay to see those ads unless you use ad blocking software. I suspect you'll still pay for the bandwidth those ads take whether you see them or not.

RoundAndBouncy is right. Stuff some newspaper in the hole so it's just below the surface. Then add some caulk to start filling the space. Let it dry repeat. A few time night be necessary and smooth the top flush.

That will help keep vermin and spiders out. But nothing really stops spiders. There are always more. All you can do is to get them to hide when they see you and many don't give a crap. They dare you to squish them.

Fish oil will cover the taste well. So well, skip the sugar. You can use more than a teaspoonful too. Half an egg should be able to adsorb almost a tablespoon full of oil. But you don't need to use so much seeing as you'll be doing this more than once a day. IF he eats it.

LOL my one that loved eggs his was Damien. After the character in "The Omen".

Any tips on how to make a stubborn ferret take his medicine? by KoalaCathin ferrets

[–]meangrampa 4 points5 points ago

An egg will adsorb quite a bit of oil. Try 1/2 an egg just scramble it and separate it. Then add a teaspoon of ferritone oil with one of the pills powered to half the egg. The lethicin in the ferritone should cover some of the bitterness, you could add a wee pinch of sugar too I'm talking not over a few grains of it. That tiny amount will dissolve and sweeten it a touch to combat the bitterness of the pill. Mix really well let sit for half an hour in the fridge and mix again then barely cook it. You want it to just barely clump because heating it too much might effect the potency of the medication. See if he'll eat it. If not call the vet and see if there is an alternative medication.

Their mouths are so small hiding pills inside of food is impossible unless you powder it.

I say ferritone oil because that's what kind of oil I'm guessing you're using. You can use olive oil too but that won't cover the taste as much. I always hated jamming pills down their throats and I had one that loved this. After he was off his meds and I gave him just plain egg like I used to before he was sick. He was pissed and wanted it with the oil. He wouldn't eat it without it.
