I use Matthias Wandel's gear generator program all the time. I'd live to talk to him.

I posted a quick and dirty jam recipe here a couple of weeks ago, if that helps. Good luck!

Crazy idea to drastically lower the amount of "vitamins" needed: printable pneumatic stuff by brmjin Reprap

[–]mdedm 1 point2 points ago

It wouldn't even need to be steam powered. You could do it with compressed air. Start small and get the axes to travel accurately with solenoids, then figure out how to make them later. This sounds like a cool project.

Home canning those basics you can't cook without? by ccsmeowin Canning

I save my potato peels, celery leaves, tomato tops, etc. in a ziplock bag in the freezer. When it gets full, I put it in the slow cooker with some water overnight. With some added basil and oregano (and sometimes leftover spaghetti sauce) it makes a fantastic vegetable broth when it's strained out. With a little salt, it cans up nicely.

Ball® Automatic Jam & Jelly Maker - New way to suck $$ out of new home canners...do not buy. by VicinSeain Canning

[–]mdedm 1 point2 points ago

What's wrong with this? It's not dangerous, it's just an unnecessary automation. If this helps people make jelly, then I don't see the problem.

I'm digging the dowel chair. It looks comfy even without the padding. Did you make it with a CNC machine? Care to share that DXF file? :)

okay, I am not really a gun person.... BUT. by brttf3in Survival

I have the Mossberg 500 12-ga "home defense special." with a slug barrel. It holds 5 rounds, has rifle sights, and is pretty accurate as far as shotguns are concerned.

Take it out and shoot it a few times to get used to the recoil, though. Plus, that gun with its short barrel is damn loud, which will be a good thing.

If you're needing takedown power, go with something 12 gauge or lower. 8 gauges are nice, but they're hard to find ammo for. Have fun on your trip!

I think this is cool what you're doing with your album. What difficulties have you faced with doing it through kickstarter instead of through a major record label? This type of approach has worked well for comedy... do you think the crowdsouring approach will work for music, too? Can you get on the radio this way?

Where do you recommend starting with weaving? I've wanted a loom for some time, but all I ever find are antiques. I'm sure the technology has improved since the advent of electricity and computers.

You really need to sit down and have a long talk with your cats and dogs. Something is going on there, and I'm worried that you might be too close to the situation to see it..

WOOD WORKERS!!!: Need assistance restoring an old rocking chair to new!!! PLEASE! by deadraughtin woodworking

I'd put some Gorilla Glue on that sucker, then sand off the foam that sticks out when it dries, and then call it good. If you wanted to try something else, you could get a 1/8" drill bit and a 1/8" dowel and drill holes through boards in a way to connect them together. You'd want to glue those, too. Ultimately, though, I think the glue will be all you need.

Sandpaper or even a draw knife would probably take care of the leveling issues. You could buy a cheap disc sander that would do the trick. Black and Decker has a nice one with a dust bag. IIRC, it comes with sandpaper in the box.

I'll ask you the same questions I ask everyone else who comes on here: Will you stay around?

We get a lot of people who show up for a couple of hours and then leave, never to be heard from again. Your opinions and insight could be appreciated all over this Web site. Not just your opinions on atheism and kittens.

Also, what does your spare time look like? I always wonder what busy people do when they get a chance to relax.

Please critique my survival bag! Description in comments. by mnmlismin Survival

[–]mdedm 2 points3 points ago

What about a GPS (batteries removed and spares in a package)? I know this doesn't fit into the "hardcore" survival mode, but if you're walking 30 miles, it might come in handy to see how far you've gone. Barring government interference or inclement weather, it will work.

Do you have an extra cell phone battery? Might want to throw that in, too.

Also, a good book that will keep your mind off your situation when you've stopped to rest.

I've read that survival bags shouldn't look like survival bags, because if you're in a situation with a lot of desperate people, someone will take it. Better swap that camo bag with a messenger or a pink hello kitty backpack.

The security people at Mt. Rushmore are pretty cool. I ended up there around 10 p.m. one night in the middle of the winter. The guy let me hang out for a while and walk down the trail a bit.

I'm pretty sure you can get an oiled canvas tarp at a hardware store for a lot less. With a sewing machine, you can make it into whatever you'd like.
