I don't think Ron Paul advocates for a gold standard, just legalization of gold (or whatever else) as a currency. The competition from gold and other currencies and commodities would force the Fed to behave or get run out of business. And eventually, FRNs (and all unbacked money) would die.

"The economy" is the result of decades of Republican and Democrat congressional, administrative, and regulatory action, with additional meddling by the quasi-governmental Federal Reserve. The (R)s are only slightly less culpable in this mess.

I am well aware that pure capitalism no longer exists on a large scale anywhere. However, it did in the early United States and elsewhere, but has been largely overtaken by mixed economies.

It's like you want to talk about capitalism in theory without dealing with it in reality

I am not talking about what does or does not exist. I am talking about you redefining capitalism. This is /r/economy, after all, and the number of downvotes you've gotten in this thread might help you to see that I might just know what I'm talking about.
