And the lenses are round because this way they can rotate, and its also easier to manufacture. You get a similar problem with the lens shade. A picture is wider than high, but it sits on a circular lens, so you end up with this tulip form that is basically a cone with a pyramid shape cut out fro it (pyramid base having the same width:height ratio than the picture).
