This is Tigger, she's celebrating her 20th today by dc8291in aww

[–]lunameow 2 points3 points ago

I think it used to be less common, but advancements in nutrition and veterinary care have increased the average lifespan. My three cats are all over 10 (the oldest is 14) and none of them are showing any signs of old age yet.

Not strictly true. Solid orange cats are nearly always male, but orange combinations can be either, and white/orange females are common.

Nah. That's just operating on autopilot. To be a fuck-up, you have to be like the guy I worked with at the grocery store who would actually get confused because he couldn't get a potato to scan, no matter how many times we all explained that only things with barcodes can be scanned. And to add to the fuck-uppery, it happened at least twice every shift, with various fruits and vegetables.

This kitten looks like every other gray tabby kitten in the world... but there's just some undefinable thing that makes it ludicrously more adorable than most.

Kickstarter fund for Whisk: a Sustainable Bakery is five days away from ending. Can you help? by kaylenwissin StLouis

That's a damn shame. Even if that had been skirting the rules, who cares? All you have to do is not support it. People are so petty and judgmental.

Edit: Alas, my donation isn't as much as I wish I could give. Even more than the idea itself, I love the drive, the initiative, and the hard work you're putting in. I've shared it around, and I'm hoping some of my "internet-famous" friends will do the same and get the word out fast.

If it's hot and I open my back door, this happens. I don't even know this guy. by dogfish182in aww

[–]lunameow 4 points5 points ago

I made up a happy ending for her. The abandoned house had tons of old furniture, so I tell myself that no one ever moved in, and she was able to keep warm and dry and enjoyed hunting the plentiful rodents and still climbs up on the roof to lie in the sun.

This happened to me, too. The kitty escaped from her carrier when we were taking her to a pre-moving vet checkup a month before we were moving across the country. We looked for her every day. The day before we were moving, we saw her sitting on the roof of an abandoned house. We broke into the house and tried to catch her, but she ran into a hole in one of the walls, and we couldn't get her out, even with food bribes. We tried one more time after we packed the car up and were about to leave, but she was nowhere to be found. That was 12 years ago, and it still makes me sad.

I also stop in to help others, but also to remind myself of what I went through when I was younger and compare it to what I have now.

I'll pledge come payday. But with only four days left, it's going to take lots of word-of-mouth to meet the goal. I hope if it doesn't happen this time around, you won't give up. This is a really neat idea (and baked goods are awesome).

Why do many people born in St. Louis seem to find the idea of living here so repugnant? by plungerjokein StLouis

[–]lunameow 0 points1 point ago

I moved to St. Louis 12 years ago, and I think the reason I dislike it so much is that where I live is a total shithole. I want to move, and I don't mind the idea of staying near St. Louis, but I don't want to live in the city anymore. But the problem is that everything's so split up. I work in Creve Coeur and live in South City, and it sucks having to make that traffic-and-construction drive back and forth 30 miles each way, especially for what I earn. So now I'm at the point where I'd just as soon add a comparatively small 5-10 minutes to the commute and enjoy living in a quieter, safer area (and I don't just mean crime... I live at an intersection on a major street where no one stops at the sign, not even a rolling stop; I've lost track of how many accidents I've seen right outside my window).

Also, public transportation in this city is a joke. I live a 10 minute drive from downtown, but when I had to take the bus to work there, it took 2.5 hours. Before I had a car, I tried to work two jobs and ended up getting literally 2 hours of sleep a night because of the commute time between the two jobs and my home. Though, again, this can be chalked up to where I live. The 70 Grand is probably the worst bus route in the city.

City police officers believe in-car cameras are being used against them, and they are trying to find ways to avoid driving cars equipped with them by folk_zombiein StLouis

[–]lunameow 2 points3 points ago

I work on the phones, so there's no camera. But every single word is recorded. Honestly, it can be a pain in the ass if you have one bad call and get nailed for it, but it's saved my job more than a few times when unfounded complaints came in. If I were dealing with guns and handcuffs in a city that hates police officers, I'd want every single interaction on video in case on of them decided to accuse me doing something I hadn't.

I dunno. I think a true redditor would have a few dozen pics on their phone. (Erm. That IS perfectly normal, right?)

For what it's worth, I don't have children, but if I did and found myself in a position where I was completely unable to provide for them (and assuming no public assistance was available, since there certainly isn't for pets), I would absolutely give a child up so that it had a better chance at life than literally being raised on the streets. My birth mother did that for me, and I've been forever grateful to her for it.

Edit: Also, that cat is awesome. Since you can't keep him, I'm glad someone else will be able to enjoy all the love and purrs he has to give.

Terrible socks by Kaidenshibain awesomesocks

Somewhere there's a book exchange giftee wondering why his Santa sent him socks.

I got this email from the Secret Santa team.. by photobooth_luvin secretsanta

[–]lunameow 0 points1 point ago

That's a shame, and that should be a good tip to all Santas that they should send at least one message. That way, if the giftee doesn't receive it, they can reply back and ask for tracking info. And it also helps those Santas who are still waiting for their giftee to post. Example, I sent my package on May 2nd, and also sent a message the day before to let them know it would be shipping. They still haven't posted their gift, but I can feel confident that it likely did arrive, since they haven't replied back to say otherwise.

The relationship I just moved across country for has crumbled. What do I do now? by BirdyWordin BreakUps

[–]lunameow 0 points1 point ago

Glad to hear you might have somewhere to go. I really think that's the most important thing. I've stayed as a "roommate" in various ended relationships, and every one of them got increasingly worse after the breakup, with shouting matches nightly, and even violence in once case.

Besides, you're in a new city. That's totally the best time to be single with no baggage. :)

My wife is disabled due to a crash accident that happened 4 years ago. Is it wrong of me to want to move on with my life? by ThrowawayAcctforeverin AskReddit

[–]lunameow 0 points1 point ago

It is a remarkable thing that others want to devote their life to taking care of people in this condition, but I am not one of them.

Even without the drunk driving part of the story, I admire you for this. So many people would stay and try to take on the responsibility, knowing full well that they're not up to it. It takes a lot of strength to be able to admit that this is not something you can/are willing to do, knowing that a large portion of society would condemn you for it.

[–]lunameow 1 point2 points ago

Check around to see if you can find someone who needs a roommate, and get out. 'Cause you're right, it's not going to get any easier if you stay, especially since he's the one who wants to completely end it and you want to work on it.

While you're stuck there, if you're in a 2 bedroom place, claim the other room for yourself until you can move out. Go to work, go out with friends, whatever you need to do, and when you come home, go straight into your room without anything more than a nod to him as you walk by. If you're in a 1 bedroom, then look for another place even faster, and see if you can make a mutual rule that the living room is yours while you're there, and he stays in his room.

Some people can break up and continue living together with no problems, but I've only ever known that to work when both parties just grew out of it.

I'm sorry I was a bitch in high school. What have you done in your past that you need to apologize (even anonymously) for? by [deleted]in AskReddit

[–]lunameow 2 points3 points ago

Same story here. I was bullied in high school, and in turn, I was mean to people even lower on the social ladder. One of those people friended me on FB. I accepted her request and sent her a message saying I was surprised that she sought me out after the things I'd done to her back then. She replied that she had been hurt by it, but that she knew I'd gotten so much worse from other people, and figured that's why I was so mean to her. She said she was glad I had someone to make fun of if it helped get the heat off of me, and she was totally sincere. It made me sad that I missed out on someone so awesome in high school.

I'm a high school English teacher. What books should everyone read in high school? by SymbolicRevolutionin books

[–]lunameow 0 points1 point ago

Anything at all that's traditionally on banned lists, along with a discussion about why people want it banned, and a short essay or open discussion with the students on whether or not the students agree and feel that parts may be inappropriate for certain ages. This accomplishes three things: 1) They've read the book, 2) they have some insight into book-banning, and 3) if they already know certain books are considered by many to be "off-limits", it satisfies their curiosity about why.
