Maybe we'll add a sidebar that requires recruiting posts to indicate your gender.

Time for a subreddit survey?

It seems mostly female to me. Guys do seem to come here to 'recruit' girls for their groups fairly often though...

League of Legends: Interview with founder of League of Girls (an all-female League of Legends clan) by lingrushin GirlGamers

I was concerned about this part of the interview:

"Especially on Reddit, the negative response was overwhelming. That experience made me decide to not recruit there, even though I received many encouraging responses from people who told me to ignore the backlash and keep on doing what I was doing."

Why I don't think primarily sexy women representing female gamers is a good thing: Study finds both men and women see images of sexy women as objects, but sexy-looking men as people. by lingrushin GirlGamers

[–]lingrush[S] 13 points14 points ago

I don't think it's in contention that female gamers are primarily represented by women who present themselves in primarily a sexual way in the media (youtube celebrities, G4/other tv, gaming sites, etc), I believe the debate is usually about whether it is detrimental to our demographic.

It's true, no individual is obligated to their gender/race/etc but it doesn't stop them from being self-serving and harming a community.

Edit:

To simplify: viewing women in gaming as objects makes it easier to harass, marginalize and stereotype them because one doesn't have to experience the kind of empathy they would if they viewed women as people. You're forced to relate to a fellow human being on some level, but you do not have to relate to something you view as an object. (Hey guys, remember the 50s?)

Why we need to keep talking about women in tech; Sexism is still alive and well... by joyprojectin GirlGamers

[–]lingrush 3 points4 points ago*

One of the arguments for affirmative action are that selecting for candidates that are different from the normal pool is beneficial for the people who are currently working. People who are different (gender/race/etc) can offer different perspectives and add more diversity/different dynamic to the atmosphere in the company.

It turns out this is true for gender-- teams that have mixed gender are more effective than teams that are solely male or female. So there can be benefits to selecting for diversity.

Here are some related studies: http://www.econ.upf.edu/~apesteguia/Gender_Teams.pdf

http://sgr.sagepub.com/content/27/1/79.abstract (in this apparently all-women teams are more effective)

My friends and I are wayyy to excited about this, I'm going to be going to the Blizzard-hosted midnight release (WOOO).

Maybe about a week or two from now we'll do an organized D3 /r/girlgamers meetup online :D Maybe that'll get some of those (thousands of) lurkers out into the light.

[–]lingrush 3 points4 points ago

At least in brogramming the sexism is a lot more blatant. Maybe that will make it easier to counter sexism-- when it is right in front of everybody's faces rather than the easier to dismiss sexism we encounter a lot today.

[–]lingrush 7 points8 points ago

Hah, I was raging about that on my twitter, but I'm glad somebody put this here. I feel like this kind of sentiment (only dudes can program, roarrr) is becoming more common with the rise of "brogramming." And like the author of the article said: it means that we do still need initiatives for women.

Harassment Beyond The Lane Phase: Two Women Talk About Life In DotA 2 by lingrushin GirlGamers

[–]lingrush[S] 3 points4 points ago*

Found this on the PA Report.

It seems like a great era for women who want to become famous in gaming culture-- but only if you want to be famous for anything but your gaming skills. Since there are a minority of women as well as an apparent lack of sex in gaming culture, any kind of woman who chooses to use sex appeal in her approach can quickly gain personal wealth and fame (that is, if she's traditionally attractive).

However, any woman that wants to game competitively and only that has to face much worst than her male counterparts. This is both because of the fact that most prominent women in the gaming culture, do go into it with boobs blazing (rather than guns, I guess) as well as the fact misogyny is unchecked in a male-dominated culture.

In short, it really sucks if you're female and want to game competitively. Once you get in the limelight, people will discuss your fuckability or question your legitimacy, rather than acknowledge your gaming abilities for what they are.

EDIT: The discussion in the comments section of the PA Report is really discouraging. I find that much of Penny Arcade's following are exactly what they are trying to counter. I wrote my own bit in the comments here:
