Mobile Phone Data Reveals Human Reproductive Strategies -- The pattern of calls and texts between humans reveals how women invest more heavily in their main relationship than men; and how this changes as they age by slaterhearstin TrueReddit

[–]lentilsoupftw 2 points3 points ago

I definitely agree. A study like this has the potential to make some really interesting conclusions as to the nuances of opposite-sex human interaction, but unfortunately it sounds like this study was slightly bungled.

What's most interesting to me is to what extent conversations via text supplant serious conversations that probably should happen face-to-face. For example, I was spending last Friday night with a good friend, and throughout the night she was actively being broken-up via text message by her boyfriend of over six months. Is this normal? I thought it was cowardly, but it was explained to me that text is a way to keep an active record of what was said.

Being socially clueless, I must ask if this is normal, or is my example an anomaly? I apologize for straying a bit off-topic.

I just came out and I'm so lost. by captainrazzmatazzin lgbt

[–]lentilsoupftw 2 points3 points ago

Most of us were in your shoes upon coming out, so I wouldn't be too concerned. I came out when I was 20, quite lost and very pessimistic about my ability to become part of the "gay community."

However, I guarantee there are people in your life who know gay men and/or women. Maybe you could ask to be introduced to them, and usually getting to know just one or two gay people will lead you to many more!

This was my experience, and it worked out splendidly. :)

A few albums I think everyone should listen to:

Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?

Why - Alopecia

Portishead - Dummy

The Knife - Silent Shout (and if you like it, listen to Fever Ray's self-titled album)

Paul Simon - Graceland

Dr. Dre - The Chronic

Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest

A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory

Tune-Yards - w h o k i l l (one of my personal favorites from 2011)

Nick Drake - Pink Moon

I just finished Kavalier and Clay, and I want to read more books now. Where should I go next? by mojo_cain books

[–]lentilsoupftw 0 points1 point ago

Kavalier and Clay is such a downer that you might enjoy something a littler more light-hearted, such as A Confederacy of Dunces by J.K. Toole or even Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

And, of course, if you want to keep riding the Chabon train then definitely take on Wonder Boys.

Hi Bookit, a good friend of mind is asking me for a recommendation for her to take to Europe. Can you help? by nihilion_Zeroin books

When I was traveling through that area a few summers ago I read A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry. It's takes place in India during the 1970s, and I mention it because it has very well-developed and strong female characters.

It's awfully dark but good for "quiet reflection"...at least it was for me.

What Are Books That You Thought You'd Love But Actually Hated? by MrSpitein books

Thank you so much. Such a disappointing book, pretty much one long reiteration of the obvious conclusions made by my freshman seminar class two years ago.

How many books have you read so far this year?? by badger992in books

I used to curse school for getting in the way of my reading habits, but now that I'm majoring in history and sociology (don't snicker) I get to read full time!

Anyway, I've probably read about 25 books this year, summer being my least consistent reading period. The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon has been my favorite so far.

I've read Siddhartha at least half-a-dozen times...it never fails to lift my spirits. So beautiful.

I get so much gratification out of reading a wonderful book more than once...almost like listening to an album. Deep, complex art requires revisiting.

I would start consuming lots of almonds (especially in butter form), pecans, walnuts, etc....nuts are healthy, calorie-dense, and full of energy (if someone has actual science to back me up, that would be great). I'm 6'2" and was 145 lbs last year at this time and was looking quite gaunt, but I've probably gained about 10 lbs of healthy weight this year this year by adding lots of nuts to my diet and eliminating most empty carbs. I also have kept the same exercise habits (~30 miles of running/week), and have noticed that I'm recovering much more quickly from my long runs.

Interesting...but wouldn't all that fiber lead to mid-run intestinal issues?
