IAMA former Blizzard customer service representative for WoW aka Gamemaster. AMAA by Paniggin IAmA

I used to play an old text based MMO. Me and my group played hardcore, like on 24/7 and actually spent hours/days delving into the mechanics. The result was us just having a HUGE advantage over everyone else in pretty much every aspect of the game.

We would have eventually hit a cap where managing stuff would simply take too much time (4 or 5 people on for 12+ hours a day, every day), but instead the dev just starting trying to patch things to limit us, but it ended up limiting everyone else even worse. We weren't even dicks about it, we'd be able to theorycraft why something would or wouldn't work to making things fair, even if it wasn't in our favor, but it was always ignored. Every update made we'd find ways around it within hours, so instead of us vs. other players it was us vs. devs. Eventually they just start banning characters but even that wasn't real effective because we literally had hundreds and assets split between all of them.

The end result was more or less breaking the game for everyone, since I quit 4 or 5 years ago there hasn't been an update since, and people addicted to it just use it as a chatroom more or less.

I've seen ONE person post that they were quitting due to lag, getting hacked, and a few other things. Other than that I've only seen people complain about things yet still keep playing.

If you're complaining yet still playing, obviously you don't feel the game is that bad or broken or else you wouldn't spend your time on it. That's how I look at it. Obviously there are some issues, some bigger than others, but that's true for pretty much every game... everything could always be "better".

I'm actually fairly happy with progressing through the game at a normal rate. I've done a few runs here and there, maybe 2 levels worth 50+, but not that much. It gets boring and I haven't even finished hell yet and I'm lvl 58.

And all of the previous games were also pretty weak at first from what I've heard. Then expansions and updates happened.

I agree there are a lot of flaws and unpolished stuff to the point it should have probably been delayed another 6 months, but even then in my personal experience it's not been bad. I wasn't waiting years for it and having huge expectations, but I was expecting a tiny bit more than what we've gotten so far. I do expect updates and a few expansions over the next 10 years though. I might not play that entire time, but I'm sure the game will always be evolving.

Should have been right after then. Googling "azmodan hotfix" comes up with tons of results about it.

I've had a pleasant experience, although I rarely join pub games. The half dozen that I have joined the other players were playing along at the same rate as me.

The worst I've had is people just not talking at all which is kind of lame. I'll usually at least say hey or something, but at least they were running through quests with me and had the same game sense.

The difference for D3 with me is that enough of my friends have it and are actively playing it that we do that with each other and don't need public games.

I'd speculate that within a few months you'll be more likely to join a game where someone has a higher level friend helping them out, so you get rushed along as well... but there's also the fact that you don't have to re-roll characters for different builds so there won't be nearly as many new characters being made as before.

Seeing a lot of D3 hate elsewhere on the web, got me wondering... by Happyhotelin Diablo

[–]larwk 0 points1 point ago

What are the chat problems people have been having? I've played SC2 a ton, and WoW for like a month on a private server (which D3 is closer to), and I really haven't noticed any problems. IMO it's easier to use than the SC2 chat system from what I've noticed.

The only thing that annoys me at time is linking an item to someone else and having to remember to hit I to open the inventory first since opening the chat will just have you type "I" instead.

DAE wish they could arrange inventory/equip from AH menu? by Silent0Killin Diablo

[–]larwk 0 points1 point ago

Having it not be gamed is far more important than them making their profit from it, to both them and players. If you have tens of thousands of people getting ripped off, losing real money due to glitches, etc it will be far worse for them than not making money from it.

I kind of doubt it. Personally I have no problem looking at all of the items on the screen quick enough to see what they are, unless it's during a champion pack fight or something, and then I don't really care what's dropping at that moment unless it's a legendary.

I'm wondering what will come in later patches/expansions to making crafting and gems useful and take them out of the game. As it is now there's almost no way to get gems out of the game besides selling them to vendors. Since they pretty much will always stay in game, once people start to get a half dozen so of fully upgraded ones their price will just always continue to fall. Maybe I'm under estimating how hard they are to get or how long it will take, but I have dozens of perfects and better that won't be used for anything. Sure eventually I'll get more socketed items and slowly upgrade them, but I'm pretty sure everyone generally has more than they need at least of the perfect/square level ones.

PSA: Just get a damn authenticator already by random19in Diablo

[–]larwk 1 point2 points ago

I ordered a physical one 5 days ago, still haven't gotten it yet even though there's supposed to be next day shipping. I have a feeling there's a lot of people ordering so they're behind on orders. Hopefully I'm safe until then.

Doesn't matter in this discussion. The issue is if you don't have a smart phone you have to PAY EXTRA for their recommended level of security.

I knew that, just never thought of it. Whatever I had different yesterday was a lot less apparent. Maybe I had something with an addition +2 arcane power/sec or something.

Ray of Frost with Cold Blood rune no longer infinite cast? by larwkin Diablo

[–]larwk 0 points1 point ago

Nope, but that makes sense. I don't remember changing weapons and before I'm sure I had more than 1.0 attacks per second, I don't think I've ever used a weapon with 1.0 except maybe the one you start with.

Maybe before it was free no matter what weapon speed and they hotfixed it?

Anyway thanks for the obvious answer I was overlooking.

[–]larwk 2 points3 points ago

The problem is, making someone spend weeks or months farming just so they can finish a game doesn't make the game fun, it makes it a tedious grind that has little worth to a normal person.

So what's the main point of D3 to you then? Experiencing the quest line? That's done in normal difficulty and only takes a day. If farming isn't something you think should be required, and there's no competitive aspect... why do you play? Just to run around and hack and slash at stuff that's easy enough for you to kill? If that's all you want to do then what does any difficulty past normal offer you as far as entertainment? Shit gets harder and you have less fun.

If all D3 was meant to be is just running around and killing shit and never dying or fighting anything hard that takes a lot of time and effort (and by a lot I don't mean a week) then people will get bored and stop playing very quickly, which I don't think Blizzard wants.

On recent nerfs, Inferno, and the Auction House by ieattime20in Diablo

[–]larwk 0 points1 point ago

What do you mean by "gear"? A really good weapon compared to what's normally seen, or a full suit of rares with perfect stats? It's 1 week in and people are expecting to be able to get full suits of the best gear? I'm sure we don't even know what the best gear even is, considering how many weeks of farming it should take to get it. Not to mention figuring out what the good builds are and what you need for them.

On recent nerfs, Inferno, and the Auction House by ieattime20in Diablo

[–]larwk 0 points1 point ago

Yes, so 1 week into the game everyone will have 1/4 of inferno done. Maybe a month for people to cruise through all of inferno? Well, what shape does that leave the game in? If everyone can do it in a month what's the use of farming? What new content is there?

It's ONE fucking week into the game, no one should be able to get through inferno by what they were promising.
