There was a story a while back about a woman cutting her husbands penis off and throwing it in the garbage disposal. Theres a clip from "The View" where Sharon Osbourne and the other hosts make jokes and laugh about it. I have no idea where to find it though, but that example always springs to mind when this topic comes up.

How about you keep your starter the whole time, but you can only use it to catch other Pokemon? You can't use your starter in gym battles or rival battles or anything.
