Looks matter a lot initially in any relationship. Relationship could be professional, personal and friendly. First impression as they say. I suffer from vitiligo which affects my face which in turn affected my love life which in turn resulted in "yeh shaadi nahi ho sakti" situation which in turn resulted in me and my sweetheart struggling for 2 years and then making it a happy beginning. On professional front, people approached me with, "Oh what happened to this guy's face" expression but later on I am any other guy. Some ignorants still offer me their sympathies and ask me how did it happen, did I have milk with fish? But I iz no carez.

But if I have to hire some one facing public I would definitely look for a pleasing personality so looks matter.

AFAIK, file_get_contents/fopen need some context to be set which generally coders do not set. Moreover these methods tend to follow redirects and you can end up going to untrusted sites using these. cURL wants you to take care of all. Hence the obvious security issue.

Now regarding horror stories of Indian devs and my comment. I have had seen my share of all good and bad coders in US, Russia, UK, Australia and India. For an Indian dev 5$ per hour is awesome deal but not for a US or Russian guy. So it all comes to cost. I have seen poorly designed specs with just few hundred bucks resulting in horror stories. So, you go to freeance websites and see projects with hardly any description. I want a clone of twitter. That's it. Budget 500$. You want an A5 for the price of an old bicycle. Good luck. Low budget means you attract cheap coders, talented ones simply do not look at these projects. But somehow decently priced projects end up with sweat shops who in turn employ cheap coders which is a genuine case of outsourcing gone wrong. This can happen to any one in India or US. You have Chinese goods and Indian coders :-)

I would have definitely marketed myself for the position you are talking about in NY but I don't have work permit for US, though have visited US twice, and currently work for #3 search engine. Yeah the organisation is not doing good as a business but we still have some awesome engineering talent. I also do some freelance consulting in spare time. You know what I mean. ;-)

I have pledged my eyes will be working towards pledging other organs, for science. :) My mom is very orthodox and wifey is limit x reaches orthodox type. I am not at all religious and I will have to force a legal instrument like will to pledge my organ if things do not work out. :)

I have market link life insurance policies which are mostly for tax saving and investments but this year I will be spending money on pure life insurance policy or term policy for me, my wifey and my kids.

cURL is not a silver bullet. Even I won't just use it just for the heck of using it but you can't deny the fact you have better control with cURL.

CPU cycles are cheap and developers aren't.

As an Indian developer looking for some freelancer I assure you that devs are available cheaply, its just a matter of quality. :)

I am not a guru or anything but have spent considerable number of years programming web apps and have learned few things. One is to have configuration in a simple key value pair which are easy to maintain. So, in your case, I will suggest you to have a bare minimum configuration in your bootstrap file e.g. path to system or core lib folder. Then have a configuration object load all properties from a single core config file by default. If this config object finds a custom property give that property a precedence. Obviously you don't want every property to be over ridden. Why do this? While working around you need a new set of config property, instead of adding it on the spot add it to config file and load via config object. Of course its another layer which may affect your system but it still has its own advantages which are much better and greater.

Regarding logs, you don't want your logs to be visible only in browsers. If you format your logs properly they can be read by multiple applications and in fact you can analyse them quickly and effectively. Consider this, you log everything in CSV format with different log levels. Take your log file, open it in some spreadsheet app, you can easily analyse error vs notices.
