When people would say "prima donna," I used to think they were saying "pre-Madonna". What words or phrases did you mishear as a kid? by meatwad75892in AskReddit

[–]kjolley3 0 points1 point ago

I always thought "by the dawn's early light" line in The Star Spangled Banner said "by the dawnzerly light." I had no idea what the adjective dawnzerly meant, but I thought it had to do with cannons and gunfire.

Incoming Freshman Needing Advice by shadowfrostin gatech

[–]kjolley3 0 points1 point ago

Shameless plugging here, but I'm part of the GT Orientation Team, and wanted to tell you that we'll answer numbers 3-6 for you in detail at orientation, if you still have any questions, though the rest of the answers in the thread have done pretty well in covering everything. For one more person's opinions on everything, here goes:

  1. I lived in Armstrong (west campus) my freshman year, and it was a wonderful place. I have heard that my friends who lived on east got a different sense of community and tradition about the school because of both proximity to things like the stadium and just the age of the dorms. West campus is all recently renovated though, and it's a really pretty part of campus, in my opinion. I really liked living on west, and have stayed over on west up until now (going into my 4th year). No matter where you end up, you'll be fine, I'm sure.

  2. Like someone else said, check the fbook group for your incoming class. That's where I found my freshman roommate, though I'm not entirely sure how it goes for summer freshmen.

  3. GPA - go to class! This is something I still struggle with. Lots of kids who come to Tech have never really had to try in school before, so it's easy to get behind when you think that Tech is just going to be more of the same, but it's a whole different ballgame. Be proactive with your learning and take advantage of all of the resources Tech has to offer. We have free tutoring in almost all of the freshman classes, so there's no good reason to be lost in a class. Mugging- just don't be dumb. Don't go walking in Home Park at night. Use Stingerette or the Midnight Rambler (night bus service) if you have to go anywhere and people aren't out and about anymore. I personally have never felt unsafe on campus, but in Home Park or off of North Ave near the Marta station is another matter. The GT police do a really good job of patrolling on campus, but they can't do a whole lot for the surrounding area (though they do patrol some in Home Park and other adjacent places). If you ever feel unsafe, you can call GT police and they'll come pick you up. They're really friendly and there to help you, not to get you in trouble. Sanity - join clubs, but don't overinvolve yourself. You want to get out there and make friends and meet new people, but keep in mind that you have to take classes still and maintain your grades.

  4. I'm not a huge fan of either subject, though I had an alright time in Calculus, even though my professor had a really thick Russian accent and talked pretty quietly. Physics is hard, but it just depends on what you're good at. Utilize your TAs if you do get a professor that for whatever reason is hard for you to deal with. And go to office hours if you're having trouble. All of the professors I've had in the subjects are perfectly willing to help you if you show that you care about the class.

  5. Our campus is really tolerant of pretty much any minority you can think of, including LGBTQ. Our Pride Alliance is very active, and started a Coming Out Week event that happens every year. Several of my friends used this time to come out to both their friends and family, and the Pride Alliance was instrumental in supporting them in their journey. College is a time when people are exposed to new things and new people, so yeah, some people come from towns where they may never have been exposed to anyone from the LGBTQ community, but the men and women of Tech are intelligent enough to learn quickly and kind enough to accept even what is foreign to them. We try to help in that transition at FASET for everyone. If it's something you're really concerned about still after hearing all of these nice people saying that it's totally fine, then you can talk with your orientation leader about it, or even your whole small group, if you'd feel comfortable doing that (there's an anonymous question/answer portion of the night programs during orientation where you'd have the opportunity to ask without anybody knowing it was you, if you'd prefer that, too).

  6. DramaTech puts on some really good productions. They're currently doing Rent, and I've heard only good things. EDIT - meant to put in DramaTech's website

Like others have said, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

TIL sharks camouflage themselves by taking advantage of water’s light-scattering properties. cleverly using light manipulations, from exposure angles, distortion and light density, essentially hiding the shark in otherwise clear water. by kumar4458in todayilearned

[–]kjolley3 0 points1 point ago

Most fish outside of tropical regions have camouflage like sharks: dark on top and light on bottom. When you look downward at them, the scattering of light will make them look like a rock on the bottom of the ocean, and when you look up from underneath, the same scattering will make their light-colored bottom side blend into the sunlight and patterns on the surface of the water. This is especially prevalent in bottom feeders like flounder.

The tit is a nickname for our basketball coliseum, which is currently being renovated. The Shaft is a giant phallic statue in the middle of campus, the Big and Little CoC are different buildings of the College of Computing (CoC), and the G-spot is our new undergrad learning center, named after G. Wayne Clough (hence, G spot).

edit: figured out what the tit was.

Where do the roots go? Once adult teeth come in, only the tops of the baby teeth fall out. I've never pulled out a full tooth before.

I'm a biology undergrad who has limited knowledge of the whale sharks that I research. Along with research, I also volunteer at the largest aquarium in the world, so some other marine bio questions are fair game. AMA

That girl was surprisingly coherent for a scene kid. She sounded pretty intelligent. Kudos to her, and shame on me for my stereotyping.
