Victoria Homeymoon tips? by wsumcgeein VictoriaBC

I would say Ferris' downstairs is totally worth it. My favourite summer activity is to sit in that cool courtyard kind of thing they have out back and have a big bowl of mussels and a jug of beer. It's surprisingly cheap considering how awesome their food is! Ferris' upstairs, bit overpriced/overrated.

Ah makes sense, thanks for the clarification! I'm in the civil field so I often forget about that part of engineering.

Could you elaborate a bit on the difference between a design firm and a consulting engineering firm?

I think there is a company directory on the APEGBC website (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC) which should include pretty much every engineering company operating in BC, broken down by discipline. Also a good Career Listings portal.

What is this contraption looking like a tap at mountain-sides for? by Gloinsonin answers

[–]kiwican 1 point2 points ago

It is used to drain the groundwater from the slope during times when the ground tends to become saturated with water due to the melting snow (i.e. spring, or maybe summer depending on the elevation). They are installed in cases where there is a possibility of a slope failure which could cause significant damage or injury.

I'm not going to get into the explanation of why, but saturated soils have lower strength than dry soils, so a slope that is stable when it is dry could fail (sometimes catastrophically, such as a landslide) when the ground becomes saturated.

A question for civil engineers by crushyerbonesin AskEngineers

The mid-level structural engineers I work with (5-10 years experience) charge out at $135/hour.... That's just what it costs to have a professional's opinion. Could save you $$thousands.

Very interested in ordering some shoes! I live in Canada though... is there any chance of getting a reasonable price on shipping? I would love to get 2 pairs or maybe even 3, these look awesome!! I love the Broadway from Summer 2011, the Water from s/s 2012 and the Delancey from s/s 2012. Please get back to me with some info :)
