I really enjoyed your discussion with Rob Paulsen on his "Talkin' Toons" podcast. I'd just like to say thanks for doing things like appearing on that podcast, and doing this AMA. It's fascinating to hear about the world of VO and I hope many of your colleagues follow suit.

Casino workers of reddit, what are some things that we patrons may not know about casinos? by legion26in AskReddit

[–]jmarch5 0 points1 point ago

A blackjack is an automatic win for the dealer, so it would be a waste of time to deal to all the players at the table if the dealer has a BJ. If the dealer has an Ace or 10 showing they'll use an apparatus that allows them to check the hole card to see if it's a BJ.

Outside of the US, it is common to find "no hole card" Blackjack, where the dealer only deals a single card (face up), and the rest of their hand is dealt after all the players have played out their hands. In this style of Blackjack the above scenario would not apply.

Regarding the screencaps you posted in EDIT 2, you circled the part where it says "100%" while completely ignoring the part at the bottom where it says "PERPETRATOR UNKNOWN FOR __ HOMICIDES". It is NOT 100% of all homicides. It is 100% of homicides for which they know the perpetrator, which is in fact less than half of the total number of homicides.

Nerdist podcast and iTunes freezing?!?! by sorepheetin nerdist

[–]jmarch5 0 points1 point ago

I noticed this too. It's pretty annoying.

It's probably best to download it through iTunes on your computer and sync it to your phone. Or if you don't want to do that, you can go to nerdist.com in Safari on your phone, and listen to the podcasts through the website. I think you have to turn off the website's mobile theme in order to see the audio player.

I looked at all those reports for the months indicated. Over half of the murders did not have any information regarding the offender, presumably because they never figured out who did it. So while 100% of offenders listed were black, this only accounts for 44% of the total number of murders in Atlanta during that time. Therefore it is wildly inaccurate to say that black people are "responsible for 100% of homicides" because they have only been proven to be responsible for 44% of them (in that specific time frame).

Also worth noting - 96% of homicide victims were black during that same time frame.

Winnipeg Casinos by Droiin Winnipeg

[–]jmarch5 1 point2 points ago

Personally I find all 3 casinos quite pleasant. The staff are all friendly for the most part. The food in the Winnipeg casinos is way better than at South Beach. I do enjoy the occasional trip to South Beach because I've found it's usually a bit less crowded, and it can be nice to get out of the city from time to time (it's not too far away though). I haven't played poker at any of them though, so I don't have any info on that for you.

If you're in the mood for blackjack, the 2 Winnipeg casinos have table minimums ranging from $3-$100. South beach tables are $5, $10, and $25 minimums if I recall correctly.

McPhillips Street has the only craps table in the province as far as I know, if you're looking to throw some dice. All 3 places have roulette, as well as an assortment of other table games that I don't find interesting (Baccarat, Pai-Gow, etc.).

You are correct. The ability to smoke used to be a big draw for South Beach, and people would drive up from the city for that reason alone. But the expansion deal was made with the government a couple years ago and now it is smoke free.

Canadian Museum for Human Rights by AllenGinsbergin canada

Winnipegger here. Don't worry, most of us agree with you. Also, the project ran out of money, so now we're all pissed about $300million (including $60million from city and provincial governments) only buying us a half-finished museum which we're not entirely sure we want anyway.

Baseball organist crowdsources music requests (Vdeo) by trs523in baseball

I love sports venues that have live organists. Talented dude to listen to a song for the first time mid-game, and then play it 2-3 minutes later in front of tens of thousands of people.

Regarding, "It's a part of the game". by Pepe_Silviain baseball

[–]jmarch5 -3 points-2 points ago

"Part of the game", "old-school", "tradition", "just the way it is". These are some of the worst reasons to try and justify anything, either in sports or in life in general. Baseball doesn't need this bullshit.

What's really mind-boggling is that this happened for no reason at all. I can understand intentional HBPs when a player does something to earn it. I still think it's classless and that baseball could do without it, but I can at least understand the "why" most of the time. But what's Hamels' reasoning here? He's 19 and needs a "welcome to the bigs"? And Hamels thinks reason is good enough to go and tell it to the media afterward? Utter madness.

JJ Abrams Blocking Any Possibility Of A New Star Trek TV Series For Now by Shadow_Jackin startrek

[–]jmarch5 1 point2 points ago

I don't think there's anything wrong with this. I think it's a good idea to let JJ have his run at making Trek without having to worry about a TV series going on at the same time. I'd hate to see discrepancies in canon, struggles for creative control, or other things that would be detrimental to Trek caused by having too many cooks in the kitchen.

I'm not saying it would be impossible, I just think there's no harm in saying "JJ's movies are the Star Trek franchise right now, we'll do a TV show when his movies are done".

Dodgers turn a "triple play" by longcaturdayin baseball

[–]jmarch5 0 points1 point ago

Hmmm, that's an interesting statement; thanks for posting. That last sentence seems to indicate that their story is "just trying to avoid the catcher". It's pretty clear that the umpire purposefully motioned foul ball, after his initial putting his arms up to avoid the catcher.

Do you have a link to where this statement was published?

Dodgers turn a "triple play" by longcaturdayin baseball

[–]jmarch5 0 points1 point ago

What a strange play. I think the ump just got flustered. He started out with his arms kinda up like "I'm getting outta the way!", but then he very emphatically and purposefully makes the foul/dead ball motion. I'm really curious why he did that.

It's possible that he just saw it in foul territory so he called it foul, but then had to change it when it went fair. If this is the case, it's a very bad rookie mistake that an MLB ump should never make.

It's also possible that he thought it might have touched someone in foul territory, then changed his mind when it became apparent that that didn't happen. If this is the case, he should have just stuck to his original call and yelled "foul". The video would show he made the wrong call, but that's at least an understandable human error for an umpire to make. Changing your call like that is just not acceptable.

Whatever the reason, this is a fairly heinous error for an MLB ump to make.
