TROPHY CASE

THE GREAT UCLA-REDDIT NETWORK! by humanist414in ucla

[–]jennz[M] 10 points11 points ago

I'm sorry, but I feel a bit insulted that you didn't run this by us other mods first. I dont think this is a good idea at all. There's no reason that we need to separate and polarize us anymore than we already are, and could cause /r/ucla to fall apart. The network that we all have in common is that we go to ucla, and that's been enough.

I put a lot of time and effort into building this subreddit on my own, so at the very least I feel like I should have some input.

My petname for my wife is "Doc". She thinks it's because she's a doctor. It's really because she's 4'9", and Doc was the first dwarf I could think of. What is your darkest secret? by IAmSoMeanMwahahin AskReddit

Modern art is actually really interesting, because the way OP put it. It's really easy to dismiss art because it's not aesthetically pleasing, but it's understanding the significance of different kinds of art (how it changed the art world, etc) that becomes important. Art after the 1900's stopped being about pictures and more about ideas, and the theory behind all the ideas are incredibly interesting.

The problem is that that's everyone's mindset towards art. What people don't realize is that painting, before the red squares and weird picasso faces, was only meant for portraiture or representational art - things were painted to look exactly like other things, because they didn't know otherwise. There was no photography to streamline that process, so no one ever thought that painting could be a form of "expression."

But then people came along and started making paintings that didn't really look like other things... they started making paintings about paint itself... or made paintings that drew attention to the material being used. Basically, modernist artists and the avant garde were experimenting with new ways to create.

So you see Malevich's Red Square, or Cy Twombly's scribbles and think "I could do that." Yes, you could, but up until them, no one else had ever done it before... so scribbles and squares as "art" was a completely new idea and experience. What's also important is that it generated a response; people were both excited at the prospect of new frontiers of art... and they were also pissed because this isn't their traditional idea of "art."

Think about the first people to do things, and what kind of a person it takes to have the ability to invent a new way of art making, for better or worse. I used to despise modern art because I couldn't understand it. Now a love it to death and love to change people's ideas of modern art by explaining it to people in ways they can better understand.

Shit. I'm a woman and i'm offended by these posters. They're branding the word "equality" on there, and that is enough to piss me off.

As a spectator, I just wanted to say thanks for keeping your posts level-headed and rational. As a woman, I want to apologize for 00oo000 and her horseshit of an excuse for "feminism." As a mod, it took all my strength not to get power hungry and swing the ban hammer out of pure bewildered outrage.

In anycase, i'm on your side. The discussion of rape should never be placing fault at anyone, and should eliminate any predisposition of guilt. It shocks and saddens me to see that anyone could believe otherwise, and so vehemently.

Since your original post was reported, I was sincerely hoping that it was a troll post... but it seems that you're genuine in your responses... and good lord is that fucking upsetting.

As a woman, i'm disregarding your statements because they are ignorant, unfounded, and irrational; and judging by the apparent "discussion" you've generated, I personally think you're a fucking idiot. I hesitate to even call you a "feminist," because feminism should not adhere to any sort of demonization of men, and your argument just severely undermines everything feminism was intended to be.

If you're feeling oppressed as a woman in today's society, living in LA, going to a world class university, I suggest you get out of your privileged little bubble of a world and visit somewhere where you can experience some real misogyny. Get the fuck over yourself, and for the sake of intelligent women everywhere, please don't ever speak on behalf of us. It's kind of embarrassing.

It's an advertisement for "Bruin Feminists for Equality," an actual group on campus. This isn't the first time I've seen such a misandrinistic poster from them either.

So, these "dude tips" are all over UCLA. By the Bruin Feminists for "Equality" by sal_kerouacin MensRights

I'm a female, I go to UCLA (mod of /r/ucla, even,) and I want to print out a list of these and show up to one of their meetings and tell them how fucking stupid they all are for thinking this sort of message was OK.

Normally, I'd probably write it off as a misguided attempt at advertising their club, but this isn't the first set of stupid posters i've seen around on campus by them. Many of their fliers have this air of superiority and condescension to them, and it just gives the BruinFems such a bad name. If I see any of these posters (which I haven't, yet) i'm tearing them down.

I've never heard my thoughts put so terse yet eloquently.

The modern idea of "feminism" has completely diminished from the earlier ideas of equal rights advocacy to what's essentially "girl power." Whether or not all "feminists" actually subscribe to this ideal, there's a group (or even a majority, if I may be so bold) who misconstrue feminism into this whole demonization of men that not only undermines the original feminist agenda, but just further polarizes our gender dichotomy - I mean, if anything, "Men's Right's" is basically a counter-movement to the presupposition that the man is always wrong perpetuated by modern day "feminists."

Women's rights nowadays are less of an issue than they were in the heyday of feminism (that's by no means to say it's a thing a thing of the past - a woman's right to abortion, for example, is still being threatened and remains a very important right to protect). In my opinion, I think the feminists nowadays are less oppressed and have run out of things to complain about, so they've resorted to bullshit in order to keep a flame under their movement. I feel like Modern society only puts up with the bullshit because of women's history of oppression, and if anyone were to challenge it, they would be accused of oppression themselves.

Language evolves just as our society and culture evolves, and "Feminism" should be a retired word. The ideas of "Feminism" nowadays has become this muddled gradient from GIRL POWER! to We live in an oppressive patriarchal society! to I support Men, Women, LGBTQ, Transgender, rights!

Can we just be "Equal Rights Advocates" so I can leave my idyllic Rosie the Riveter idea of feminism alone in my head?

He sat down at the same table as me once at NCSC last year. I pulled out my laptop and was eating lunch and tried my hardest to ignore/pretend not to know him while he yelled into his ipod headphone for about 20 minutes. As if I wasn't weirded out enough already, he tries to make small talk with me by first commenting on how many people from the NSA (National Security Association) are here, and when I didn't really know how to respond, he asked if my laptop had vents on it. After I pointed them out, he started getting upset and going on about how the Pentagon has to send more agents this year because of him having to report more "people like me" doing illegal activities like pointing my laptop vents at his food because I knew he wouldn't eat it afterwards. He wouldn't accept my confused apology, citing "Yeah, that's what they all say."

He didn't eat his food after. I moved tables.

People in suits hold a protest against a planned Abercrombie & Fitch store on Savile Row, London by PoopOnGodin pics

[–]jennz -5 points-4 points ago

I work at Abercrombie & Fitch. Not having worn their clothes nor knowing much about the store prior to being recruited to work there, I find the complaints of how strong the store smells and the loud music to be generic, fashionable hate towards the company. Sure, when you work there the same 12 songs playing over and over can get irritating (our playlist is actually bearable to listen to this season), but I've never had someone come in and complain about the smell. Then again, it could be because I work at a tourist location and foreigners go nuts over the cologne.

Switching into Fine Arts Major? by hapladgahin ucla

[–]jennz 0 points1 point ago

For sure! Happy to help. How did you feel about 31A? You'd be surprised as to how pertinent it is in creating stuff... though I didn't appreciate that until the middle of my 2nd year.

Acrylics are fine, but you do want a little variety if you can. Remember, less is more! I only submitted 8 pieces, and one was a close up. They want to see strong technical ability first and foremost, and then evidence of conceptualism and/or abstraction, so find that balance. If you can show a good understanding of abstraction, it'll help, but make sure you "know what you're doing" (for lack of a better term. 'cause i still have a hard time with abstraction ;] )

The majority of my application portfolio was also from my AP Studio Art class, but I applied the same year so my work was very recent. You can get away with older pieces (and honestly, you can fudge some dates too, as long as it's not conspicuous), but more recent work would be best. If you can, find me on facebook and i'll show you a link to my portfolio app album... yeah, i've been too lazy to put them elsewhere :P Plus, you'll be able to see some of my more recent works, which might also help.
