I like how, back in the day, you didn't just get money to endorse a product or service, an actual job title came with it.

League out of closer role by Dawg4Lifein Mariners

[–]jeffinfremont 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I'm kind of surprised by the move. I guess they're hoping that if he can settle down in June they can move him back into the closer role by July and get some value back out of him.

Canada has weaker booms and busts because, like Australia, they insist on having a boring banking system.

Could someone please provide a rational explanation as to why League is still our closer? by sirernestshackletonin Mariners

Vs. sending Wells down?

I wasn't happy about that move, either. My hunch was that the FO told Z that he has to exhaust any and all attempts to trade Figgins before they'll eat the $14 million left on his contract.

As for League, it may be in the short-term interest of the club to relegate him to the bullpen, but that will only diminish his value, and kill any chance he has to regain his form in the next two months. The team is not going to contend for anything this year, so worst case scenario is that League blows 5 or 6 more games before the deadline and loses all his value. You relegate him now and he loses all his value. I don't think it's Wedge's call whether or not League remains the closer, I'm pretty sure that's Z's call.

Hindsight being 20/20, Z probably should have made a deal in the off-season, but my guess is that he took a gamble that League would stay solid this season, and he could extract greater value towards the trade deadline.

Obviously that gamble is not paying off right now, but there's still two months left, which is plenty of time for League to turn it around.

Having only checked out this thread this morning, I'm starting to think the entire thing is a drunk overreaction.

Sending him to Tacoma is an indicator that the club has lost confidence in him, and his trade value immediately goes to zero.

Like the M's, Minnesota is not contending for anything this season and has no reason to trade for a high risk/high reward relief pitcher.

Z will be looking for a deadline trade partner that is in contention (or at least thinks that it is in contention), but has shaky relief pitching and will be desperate to take some gambles to bolster it.

He's still got two months, or approximately 40 games, to increase his value. There's no point in cutting bait now.

Because the M's are not contending for anything this year, and League is one of the club's top bargaining chips at the trade deadline. Yes, he has had a bad couple of weeks, but if he can turn it around then there's still hope that Z will be able to get some value for him.

I was frustrated as anyone at last night's result, but there's no point in dumping or relegating him unless he's deteriorated to the point where he has minimal trade value.

Reddit, why don't we start a new party? by takebackoursystemin politics

[–]jeffinfremont -2 points-1 points ago

Hey, this again!

Seriously, I've given this thought and it seems to me that the only way you could get this off the ground is to launch the "One Term Party", and the central tenant is exactly as it's titled - candidates run for one term and one term only, and I'm talking any office from local dog catcher to POTUS.

I think this approach would have a ton of appeal to independents and moderates from both parties. Get a decent enough number of One-Termers in office, and they could present a powerful bloc of elected officials who cannot be bought by lobbyists, as they have no need to fundraise for re-election.
