I am Neil deGrasse Tyson, Ask Me Anything... by neiltysonin IAmA

[–]jcsoybomb 1 point2 points ago

Dr. Tyson, Dr. Kaku speaks of three types of civilizations which I believe is related to the Kardashev scale. In this talk he warns, as Sagan did essentially, that we may get to a Type 1 civilization as long as we don't destroy ourselves first. Do you agree, and do you have any advice or wisdom for us concerned citizens of the Universe to help us get past the seeming inevitability of our species destroying itself through the competitive nature that brought us to this level in the first place?

An Open Letter to the Republican National Committee: I am your demographic and you've lost my vote by aelbricin politics

[–]jcsoybomb 0 points1 point ago

Send it to everyone in Office, even if you're not their constituent. I'm not sure where I am on the scale anymore, I considered myself a socially liberal republican. I don't care about most of the issues that take over each debate. I want the Government to leave me and my brothers and sisters alone, especially with our personal liberties. Big Gov is the only Terrorism I'm afraid of. Government should be there for supporting the American dream, not crushing it and selling off the remains.

Tried to kill myself, don't remember it. Not "depressed" and am now worried. by CelexaConcernin SuicideWatch

[–]jcsoybomb -1 points0 points ago

I'm no professional either. The way it was explained to me was that suicidal actions are a side effect of SSRI and other types of anti-depressants because it is working. This seems counter-intuitive, but if you are suicidal and too depressed to even consider acting on it (days you can't do anything at all, even getting out of bed is hard), then the pills might get you sufficiently energized to do things in general. If your thought process has been carving out this one thought of suicide, then that may be the first thing you act on.

I think this may be repressed memories and feelings of worthlessness combined with the guilt your family just gave you for "abandoning" them. Abusive people are very sensitive and petty, which is hard to see until you can view it from the outside. In a way they may have been trying to control you by making you feel guilty.

I recommend seeing a therapist. Don't be afraid to try several out to find one who works on your same wavelength. Initially discuss the suicide, but you should probably try to iron out the issues that made you want to leave in the first place. It's hard to deal with, but as emotionally fragile animals, we must find solid foundations to rest our psyche on, it sounds like your foundation was not solid. I wish you luck, help is out there.

Hey drummers, it's time we made ourselves an FAQ. by GeneralMillssin drums

[–]jcsoybomb 0 points1 point ago

It took me years of pain before I set up my kit properly in terms of body mechanics. "How do I set up my kit?" should include snare height, seat height, bass pedal adjustments and tom and cymbal angles/heights in terms of body mechanics. (ie 90 degree angle on the knees.)

Someone more experienced than I should answer "Why should I learn the rudiments?" and "Why should I learn <genre>?" for the drummers who would probably be good but need to see a reason before they get motivated. (When are we going to use this?)

Reached the end of Google, still can't boot. by jcsoybombin archlinux

You're a goddamn saint! dd method works perfectly on the USB drive.

fdisk -l

didn't work for me (I've got Linux Mint 12 on this machine) but I found a method to identify the drive at http://superuser.com/questions/361885/how-do-i-figure-out-which-dev-is-a-usb-device.

As long as you are running udev, you can do this easily by referencing /dev/disk/by-id/usb-manufacturername_serialnumber. These appear as symbolic links which you can either directly reference within your fstab, or which you can dereference using readlink -e to determine the associated block device.

basically it's just

$ readlink -e /dev/disk/by-id/usb-lexar-<serialnumber>

Here's a technique I like to use. 1. Buy an 18 pack, then everything gets blurry. 2. Wake up late for work with 18 empty cans strewn about your room. 3. Yell profanities at your windshield as you speed to work.

Sorry I was so vague. I edited to clarify. As usual, I was drunk and annoyed. In the morning I was like "WTF did I write?" Especially because the computer itself boots fine, its just that the arch linux image couldn't boot via the CD or USB. Only sending me to a prompt after the message:

ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds ...

Thanks, I'll keep going and post my results here upon success.

Thanks, I'll try the dd method tonight.

[–]jcsoybomb[S] 1 point2 points ago

Thanks, I'll try the network boot option when I get home.

(doesn't need to be USB, any drive you can boot from works)

Does this mean I could boot with a Live Linux Distro, dd the image to my hard drive and reboot? I know this would probably just be another level of confusion during troubleshooting, but I might use this method later on. (This is probably the method used to image a bunch of computers at the same time now that I think of it, but I haven't had to do that yet.)

(cont.)

Jareds heart and mind were magical vending machines. You could walk up to him, deposit garbage and he would give you gold everytime. A thoughtful and caring alchemist.

I met Jared at precisely the time in my life that I needed to meet a person like him. I was in the fires between youth and adulthood where questions were rampant, and I didn't like or believe any of the answers I was getting. Through his example, wisdom and humor I found a corner of life where I could remain at peace. Jared was truly unique but of a few traits I am privileged enough to consider myself kindred. Our appreciation of all creative endeavours, our ability to find beauty in the hideous, our cheerful nature. Of course, I can't imagine anyone knowing him and not seeing the same point of view.

I just want this to be the swan song of [his families] legendary pranks. The world is worse off, and I wish we all could have split your load with you. We all would have carried you for as long as it took if only we had been privy to know your anguish. I understand that in fading light it is hard to find a soul to share with. I understand the desire to extinguish gracefully the light you have blessed us with so many times in such confusing and depraved moments.

Mitch Hedberg said that alcoholism is the only disease you can get yelled at for having. I feel that depression, as a mental disease, has a similarly negative stigma. There is shame and guilt in talking about it, and so the strongest ones never will until the second mind convinces them that these terrible things are actually what they want. Self fulfilling prophecies which have a tendency to run free if left unchecked. By the time they are strong enough to have influence, there is often little energy left to check them. It's sad that this disease coincides with deep thinking and empathetic minds. The very minds we need to fix the problems that afflict us so desperately.

Jared would never judge any decision or affliction. He would only listen with concern to anything bothering any of us. I don't believe the signs were there, which makes this all the harder to deal with. I can never know his intentions or struggles. Based on his caring nature and his constant stream of uplifting remarks, I do believe he would want us to grieve healthily and move forward as soon as possible. He would have helped us any step of the way. Since he has left, let us not forget that we still have each other.

Maybe you didn't realize that all of these hooks between you and everyone that cared about you could have been parachute cords. Perhaps this was inevitable, only you are qualified to never tell us. I believe we could have cushioned your descent, and at our best I hope we did in some way. Tragedy strikes suddenly and viciously. We are left attempting to put together a puzzle with many missing pieces.

If you weren't aware you were playing follow the leader, it might be terrifying to look back and realize 100's of people had been following you as you went through life. We just wanted to see what next would take hold of an insatiable curiosity. You were too much for the world Jared, but we appreciated the ways that you helped to shape ours.

I ain't mad atcha, but I'm pretty upset about the jokes we'll never laugh about together again.

Beware a life inside your head. Paradise becomes a prison when outlets are snuffed. There is a bigger monster at play. It is stronger than an avalanche and it's greatest weapon is silence.

Burn brightly while your wick has the fuel. Hug them all a little tighter, or push them away a little less.
