Redbox's Downfall by Doug1080in comics

Their selection was probably my biggest issue. Much better than Redbox, but Blockbuster probably had them beat.

Redbox's Downfall by Doug1080in comics

[–]iwishihadaburger 9 points10 points ago*

A place like this called Roboflix opened up near my parents' house a few years ago. Small store, about the size of two small bedrooms plus a back room half that size for staff. They had several redbox-type machines for selecting movies, and a central dispenser that 3 people at a time could use. If you put $20 on a pre-paid card you could get 24hr access with your member card.

The location is a busy shopping center that includes a stubborn Blockbuster and a grocery store with a pair of Redbox kiosks. From what I hear Roboflix has gone out of business.

Side by side comparison of LED street lamps vs. the old HSL. You be the judge. by user_abuserin Seattle

The optics on those LED streetlights limit backlight and uplight, and they do a much better job of focusing light on the road surface. Overall, they create a lot less light pollution than the old HPS lights.

Oaksterdam University is currently being raided by Feds by JackIsColorsin trees

[–]iwishihadaburger 2 points3 points ago

They're probably enforcing IRS code 26 USC § 280E - it prohibits businesses from deducting business expenses from their federal income tax if involved in 'illegal activity'. So, if Oaksterdam attempts to write off employee salaries, capital expenses, or really anything at all, they're labeled as tax cheats - even though they're paying their taxes in exactly the same way any other business would.

The worst part is that the IRS, DEA, and their like will get to keep enforcing this law even if a state successfully legalizes.

Police: Zimmerman says Trayvon decked him with one blow then began hammerin by darkgumpin politics

There are no witness reports confirming that Martin sucker punched Zimmerman. An eyewitness reported that Martin was at one point on top of Zimmerman, but there is no evidence Martin confronted Zimmerman beyond Zimmerman's account of what happened.

My roommate has a knife with a 3.375" blade - and it seems huge to me. Unless you're hunting, camping or cooking there's almost always a better tool for the task. An inch really means a lot on a blade that length. My 3" folder seems petite by comparison.

I'd add mouth and ear protection to that as well. When I was in 12 or 13 I was shot in the tooth at a range of 12 feet or so. I didn't feel anything, but my mouth was full of hard, tiny shards. I spat out a suspiciously unscathed spherical pellet, and some tooth fragments.

The chipped-off portion comprised about a sixth of the front of my tooth, but it didn't hit the root; so I was able to get into my dentist's office on a Saturday afternoon to have it replaced with resin. Can't even see the difference.

A 6mm pellet is certainly able to get lodged in the ear canal. But if you wear a specifically designed facemask you'll be safe from anything that won't heal on its own.

NYC and LA both get more inches of rain per year than Seattle, it's just overcast 75% of the time. In my opinion, our weather in the summer makes up for this easily - stop by in August, you won't be disappointed.

Killing Of Florida Teen Trayvon Martin Becomes National Story About Race by Purplehayessin politics

He called once to report his neighbor's open garage door. And in the sixth call, Zimmerman reports children are "habitually" playing in the street at dusk and running in front of cars. He asked dispatchers to take his complaint anonymously, but provided his name and phone number.

The next paragraph in the article I linked. 100% of his suspicious persons calls to 911 (thus far released) were regarding blacks.

P.S. You could have figured that out if you read the source you asked for.

The neighborhood crime watch volunteer who shot and killed Trayvon Martin last month, called 911 dozens of times in the months that led to the fatal shooting.

This afternoon six of the calls made by George Zimmerman were released by the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

In four of the recordings Zimmerman called police to report "suspicious" persons — all of whom were black — in or near the Retreat at Twin Lakes neighborhood.

Pretty much. A smooth gradient from the water to the sky would be great, but I don't know how to do that.

Left it on flickr to attribute the photographer, so fuck off if you wanted it on imgur.

I'm using this as a wallpaper for my laptop at the moment, had to make some unfortunate photochops to preserve the aspect ratio.*

Most of the time I need a visual stimulus to get a response, but this is a great exception. Check it out with good stereo speakers or headphones for best results.

The most popular car in Montana is probably the Subaru Outback, thanks to its gas mileage and permanent AWD. No one wastes time on a gas guzzler in rural areas unless it's a truck that's actually being used for something useful.

Did you just hear sirens? Type in your location to find out why. Close to real-time 911 information and links to police reports. by hekangruiin Seattle

[–]iwishihadaburger 0 points1 point ago*

Too bad that's all it's good for. The linked police reports are incredibly redacted and a 48 hour timeline doesn't allow for much interpretation.

If this was meant to be a useful tool for public disclosure, it would contain all types of crime, rather than omitting sexual assault and other serious crimes.

EDIT: I guess I'll add this disclaimer:

these events will populate the map only after the incident is considered safe to close out.

So it's basically a map of all incidents resolved within 48 hours. Nothing that the general public would typically care about. Plenty of other police departments provide much better online info than this, but I guess the SPD isn't exactly a pinnacle of transparency. I'll admit the website's pretty slick.

That's the only time I go to mass with my family anymore. We go to the cathedral for the early children's service, then go home and have a big dinner. I don't mind it a bit. It's very nostalgic, I admire the architecture of the place, and I got to sit near Conan O'Brien for an hour and a half.

The Murdoch block can be a little overzealous. Someone in another thread mentioned that News Corp owns the Nat Geo TV channel, but the website and magazine itself have nothing to do with News Corp.

First time I smoked I had a full joint. Good technique, inhaled clean air after hitting, held it in. Didn't do a thing. I may have gotten the munchies, but that's up for debate. Tried smoking again a day or two later, since my roommates were astonished. I think i smoked about 2/3 of a reasonable blunt, to the same effect.

I smoked a joint a week later and it took me to a [10] the likes of which I've never approached since.
