TROPHY CASE

1 yo's first stomach bug. When did your kid first throw up on you? by PharmDvsTRexin Mommit

[–]istara 0 points1 point ago

In the car, at about eleven months or so. We'd just arrived at the destination and had a grandparent in the car, so I was in the back next to her. She turned to me and was grinning, and I was smiling.

Then suddenly - vomit started coming, pouring, flowing, erupting from her. Thankfully it was quite "fresh" - essentially the same soupy sachet of tuna she'd eaten about 10 minutes before.

What was weird were two things:

  1. She seemed completely unaffected and calm throughout the whole thing (and immediately afterwards she was as right as rain and toddling and playing happily all over the park)

  2. It just... kept... coming... - we were all over her with tissues and cloths (yay for muslin wraps!) freaking out and trying to minimise the spread, but it just kept coming out of her mouth. It wouldn't stop.

Me All the Time: The Epidemic of Narcissism | Think Tank | Big Think by epikin Foodforthought

[–]istara 1 point2 points ago

Wow the test is terribly written - the answers are so extreme. It needs a sliding scale or something.

And I'm sure there are tonnes of "narcissists" who would love to rule the world and think they are of spectacularly high intelligence that also hate their bodies.

Re ambition: my first though would be ambition for what? If it's ambition for the sake of ambition: to win, for power, for success for success's sake, then clearly, yes, that's likely associated with narcissism. But people who are ambitious academically because they want to make the world a better place (even in a small way) or just really like something and want to work towards it, I fail to see why that should be associated with narcissism.

You could have all the drive in the world and remain genuinely humble and self-deprecatory.

EDIT: "Your score is 4 out of 40. The average score is 15.3" - I have no clue what that signifies.

Not quite true - it depends on the level that you eat.

Could someone explain to me, what's inherently wrong with 1700 people coming over here and working in the mines? by DiggSuxNowin australia

[–]istara 5 points6 points ago

An international would keep quiet because if they lose their job, they'll get shipped back to their shitty country.

Exactly this. Having been on a 457, you really are over a barrell. The problem is that if you fall out with your employer and they stop paying you/lay you off, even if you are in the right and there is litigation in process, how do you support yourself? You're not eligible for any benefits. If you have no savings you're shot, since you can't work (legally) for anyone else.

All the protections sounds great on paper, but in practice it's a crock. And I say this as someone from the UK with fluent English and a safe home to go back to, not someone from a third world country who doesn't have English as a first language and will find it much harder to research and understand their rights. I've spoken with lawyers who try to help exploited foreign workers, and language is one of the key issues compounding their victimhood.

What this really highlights is the problem with relying on the private sector to actually do anything that costs them in the short-term.

In "fairness", they are so constantly accountable to the results cycle and their shareholders that this forces short-termism (it's even worse in the US with their quarterly updates).

But basically it's another demonstration that any free rein given to private corporations will be used solely to benefit them, profit-wise.

Apple CEO gives up $75 million in dividend income by BoonTobiasin apple

[–]istara 2 points3 points ago

It's kind of interesting? poignant? how this title starts "Apple CEO" rather than "Tim Cook".

Steve Jobs was nearly always referred to as "Steve Jobs" or just "Jobs" in headlines.

One man was bigger than his company, one is not (yet anyway).

There was some interesting ones, some meh ones, and some awful ones. I tend to like unusual names, particularly if they have some kind of classical heritage (Vergil, Nero).

Some of them (Shayde) were unbearable though.

I'd like to see less of the hokey shit, I just don't think it should be pinned up on the same wall of shame (supposedly) used for actual race hate, misogyny, abuse.

Someone saying a girl "asked for it" because she wore a short skirt, that should be SRS material. Someone making a dumb "make me a sandwich" comment - that's a rolleye and a downvote, but not really worthy of much else.

And I simply cannot bring myself to believe that we were, given the total and utter lack of any credible scientific evidence, let alone proof, of such a thing.

I'm completely open to receiving that proof one day and changing my opinion. Until then, I'm not going to base my life or beliefs on the pointless fantasy concept of alien "multi dimensional" experiments, whatever the hell that means.

My wife is going crazy. I don't know what to do. by jbtrumpsin Parenting

[–]istara 1 point2 points ago

Vent all you like! Blowing off steam on here is a great way to deal with it, if it reduces your stress.

I agree with others that he may just be a "high needs" baby.

But I do think you should see lactation consultants.

Around 6-8 weeks is one hell of a growth spurt, I nearly had a breakdown as I was struggling with supply, but it all gradually came together.

My only off-the-wall suggestion might be to occasionally try a nipple shield to give your wife's nipples a break (if they're sore, as I imagine they must be!) as maybe that will help him transition to a pacifier if she can't keep up this level of nursing.

I also suggest they lie down and nurse if they're not already. He may fall asleep more easily and she may be able to doze a bit.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. Everything started turning around for me from about eight weeks. From about eight weeks to twelve weeks their latch and suck gets stronger, which helps with feeding. Also, supply switches from being hormone-driven to demand-driven, so will better match his needs. And his current growth spurt should ease.

My concern is that this woman is already suffering being shacked up with an asshole and may be living in fear of losing her baby or her home. It certainly sounds like she could use support.

That said, the early weeks are so stressful that he may have been blowing off steam to you. I think I would try and pop round with a baby gift to get a closer look at the situation, then make a decision.

Doctors should report if there are concerns but they don't always. However newborns do end up needing hospital treatment, and many of them have weight gain issues even with the most concerned and caring parents following all medical advice.
