How many attempts does UPS try to deliver a package? If they exceed those attempts, does the package stay at the P.O. or local UPS or does it get sent back? by Eowyn27in nyc

[–]ictoan 0 points1 point ago

Actually, I think they automatically send back to sender after 3 attempts unless you call and let them know you will pick it up.

Commuters: what's the more affordable way? by ju29roin nyc

walking :P

Hm.. I usually just buy a monthly pass so that you can use it whenever you want without thinking about how much money it is in the card except for that specific expiration date. It is pretty convenient and if you like to hang out in the city, it is a pretty good deal because you'll end up using it more than you plan to.

Terribly confused and strangely excited as well - female friend of 10 years is posting nude pictures of herself on her blog. by z0ltanz0ltanin relationships

[–]ictoan 2 points3 points ago

She is obviously obsessed with you and you keep reading her blog just gives her painful hope that you would understand her feelings. However, what she doesn't understand is that you do know her feelings but you cannot give what she wants.. it is not that you are clueless...

I don't think you should ask her to stop writing stuff about you unless she gives out your personal information. You, however, should just stop showing 'interest' in her by reading her blog.

And to be honest... to fantasize about having kids and write it on her blog is a little bit creepy! I mean, I know how awful unrequited love feels and sometimes do snoop on the person but it is just creepy to write about having kids and everything when there is nothing going on. Plus the nude pictures? That's being extremely desperate and sad. Poor girl...

UPDATE: My girlfriend told me that I'm abusive and wants to leave. by AmIAbusivein relationships

[–]ictoan 1 point2 points ago

Wow, I read your other post and this one and what a shock! If you didn't give an update, then the last one was definitely a head scratcher. Now it all makes sense.. somewhat.

I hate people start accusing you being manipulative without explaining why or give you a chance to explain. That happened to me with my ex and it hurt me a lot because I think manipulation is horrible horrible thing. I think he was being defensive and trying to make excuse so that I look bad instead. Sounds like your ex did the same thing. She was doing something wrong and decided to put the blames on you. Ugh, how crappy.

Good luck with recovery.. seriously, your brother and ex have lots of problems. Best of luck with them too.

What is something you do to make yourself happy? by misosoupandteain happy

I think Buddha once said... when there is darkness, light a candle.

So I like to light a tea light candle whenever I feel darkness in my heart.

[–]ictoan 3 points4 points ago

I really like the way you presented your thoughts on your tumblr. Love the hand writing. It is scary to think that, what if depression is just me, then will it continue forever as long as I live? I think people oftentimes blame themselves and make themselves feel even worst.. the best thing to do is try to accept your depression.. try to talk to it and make peace with it.. I think that's the most helpful..

Should I tell my supervisor that I have depression? by femboostin depression

[–]ictoan 0 points1 point ago

I don't think you should tell your supervisor using the exact term. Maybe soften it up and tell him you have some personal problem that is preventing you from performing well in the job but you are working on it. There is no point in telling him exactly what it is and he probably doesn't need to know what it is. The communication between you and him is whether or not you can perform better on the job.

[–]ictoan 14 points15 points ago

Yeah what your wife says is exactly my sentiment as well (I'm Chinese-American).

The Opium Wars is part of Chinese history that not many Westerners remember. It is a big deal in China. Eight western countries ganging up on China because the Chinese don't want to buy Opiums anymore. Hong Kong and Macau was taken from China as war repayment etc.. The palaces in Beijing were destroyed and valuables stolen away. The list can go on. When you look at history, it is no wonder why Chinese people tend to trust their own government rather than foreigners.

The Drug Questions by AdShooterin Buddhism

[–]ictoan 0 points1 point ago

While tripping I'd be exposed to a lot of my mental baggage and realized quickly that I had the option of letting it go. This letting go was typically met with feelings of rapture or release. In many cases it had the sense of being forgiven for bad choices.

Interesting. I have these moments too from time to time for no longer than 1 minute. Usually I feel very numb and close off from the world.

Thanks for sharing your experience. While I admit drugs are probably not for me, I think it is an individual choice that I respect. I don't understand it but that doesn't mean it cannot be good use for others. We make our own paths :) It's cool that although we start from different paths, we ended up on the same one (Buddhism) now.

Namaste~

The video game and drug use example is to show how we tend to use correlation as causations to make unreliable claims.

Here are my thoughts: I accept the facts that you and others have found Buddhism through psychedelic experiences. However, I am trying to understand your frame of reference. For me, I discovered Buddhism because I was trying to ease my suffering from a relationship breakup. My frame of reference was to find something to help me accept reality and understand how to let go of my egos and emotions. That being said, I don't think drugs would have help me accept reality and let go of my egos and emotions... so I didn't use them. I think if I did use them, then I would've been suffering even more, because that would be running away from reality by depending on temporary relives.

Now that being said, perhaps you found something wonderful through drugs and it may even be a perfectly good path for you. But I don't agree that psychedelic drugs and Buddhism should be put into the same category. It is a very West-centered thinking. Even before the invention of psychedelic drugs, people have found Buddhism through their own paths. You may argue that in Indian many monks have smoked too. It is true but what about countries such China, Korean, Japan, Cambodia, Thailand etc..? Millions of people found refuge in Buddhism w/o using drugs. And what were their frame of references?

I think the argument about psychedelic drugs and path to Buddhism is a very West-center view. The path to Buddhism can be many different things for people. Drugs or not, we all have a little Buddha inside us waiting to be awaken.

Edit: Sorry this is a bit long but I want to point out that I see how Buddhism is viewed from both a Western and Eastern perspective. I moved to U.S. from China when I was 10 and if you talk to my parents or anyone from China, drugs and Buddhism is absolutely unrelated. Buddhism is about practicing simple living to them.

Correlation does not imply causation. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Correlation_does_not_imply_causation).

Just because many people said psychedelics led them to Buddhism does not mean psychedelic caused people to be Buddhist. There are probably other variables to look at. For example, people who do drugs are probably more open to new ways of thinking and experiences. Buddhism was pretty new to the west at the same time psychedelics was new to the west.

To say that psychedelic drugs led people to Buddhism is like saying playing violent video games led people to school shootings.
