TROPHY CASE

Regarding Black Sabbath: Musicians of Shreddit, what was the worst band you were ever apart of... by kaptain_carbonin Metal

[–]ichabodguitar 3 points4 points ago

I subbed as singer, then later as second guitarist, for a signed metal band that my close friend had a couple years ago. I'd say I definitely preferred being second guitarist over lead singer (I do vocals and guitar in my band), as I just don't feel comfortable on stage without a guitar in my hands. If they decided to reform or at least do a reunion, I would be 100% down and would do it for free as long as it was basically the original lineup with the original second guitarist switched out for me. I wouldn't tour (I never did when I subbed for them anyway) because I have a big-boy job and the road life would eat me alive, but that music was a lot of fun. It was also kind of nice to not have to write anything, just parrot back the parts that were already there. Sadly, I wasn't part of any of the drama that led to the band imploding, but it was mostly just the typical creative differences thing.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that the typical Redditor has probably pirated something in their lifetime, but has no hands-on experience when it comes to something like forced sterilization.

Thank you for offering some insight into being a preemie parent. It's very interesting to hear that the survival rate of a baby born 3 months (!) early are now so high.

And I agree, the correct wording is "will" and not "should" - though there might be an ethical question there in the latter that would be null in the former, but the latter does come off as harsh. Apologies.

Your last sentence said it better than I could.

Did you see the recent Askreddit post about the idea of giving people "parenting licenses"? I didn't even open the thread because I knew there'd be some fierce discussion in there from both sides, but that there's no way anything like that would ever happen. It's just so obviously ethically wrong.

It's really not as bad as my comment may have made it seem. The guys rib me, I reply with, "I guess I know who's not getting any cookies." I actually made dozens and dozens of chocolate chip cookies for our CD release show last spring, and you would not believe how many minds were blown when the people coming up to our merch table found out I made them haha.

I'm probably the wrong person to ask about this sort of thing, as I've always been kind of an overpopulation nut and seethe internally when I see families with tons of children; while I can accept that some people want big families, I wish more people would adopt (1. I of course have no idea whether these families did adopt, and 2. I know that adoption is a long process and a sticky subject, as many people want their children to be "their own" - it's simple biology). I'm completely with you that caring for preemies is a really touchy subject - thus the fact that I can't bring myself to talk to anyone about it for fear of coming off as a misanthropic barbarian, not even my wife - and I think the biggest issue should be the baby's quality of life. I understand that there are many other powerful factors involved, especially the parents' desire to save their child, and I too have no way of saying what I would do in the same situation... I just wonder sometimes if it's the ethically right choice. Then again, I was never much of a philosopher.

I'm not sure if I'm really getting my point across here, because half of the thoughts that went through my head I knew would sound even more barbaric, and I wasn't even sure if I meant them. In any case, I agree with your points and wonder about the "cost" (not in dollars) of saving ultra-preemie babies, in particular.

2 things:

-You didn't mention the large plastic container (I don't know the official term) she is situated in. Does that create a sterile environment for her? If so, is that because preemies do not have fully-developed immune systems (developed to the point of a full-term baby, that is)?

-You said that the monitoring equipment isn't actually doing anything for her, but if something went wrong (blood pressure drop/spike, etc), the doctors and nurses would be notified and would be able to keep her alive. Do full-term babies require the same type of monitoring equipment?

These are genuine questions, not trying to troll.

I find this kind of progress both amazing and disturbing. What are your thoughts on whether preemies and ultra-preemies should survive?

(Obviously, this is a very touchy subject, and one that I have never been able to ask IRL)

Well, that's not exactly true... I would guess that the vast majority of preemies would not survive if not for modern medical technology - note the apparatus to which OP's daughter is connected.

Well put. We're good.

While I don't 100% agree that my tone was aggressive, circle-jerking, or parodying you (the all-caps was referring to TrueReddit's rules and wasn't meant to sound like I was attacking your angle), I appreciate that you explained your thought process through the conversation. Apologies for coming off too strong, I have a tendency to do that sometimes, as I don't always see what I'm saying as negative.

I'm not blowing up, I just don't understand why you needed to turn me commiserating with another guy who likes to cook into an overarching social commentary. Very little on Reddit should be seen as more than a simple conversation about similar or differing life experiences, IMO.

Yes, it derailed into semantics, so to answer your question (and the unanswered previous question), their jokes about these things are sporadic, mainly done to rib me and enforce their masculine lifestyle, I suppose. They're still my friends, as well as current or past band members, and it's not like I can't take a joke. I think I'm a relatively skilled cook, baker and gardener, and I think some of them may be a bit jealous (probably not of the specific skills as much as the idea of self-sufficiency...or maybe they just wish they could make delicious treats?).

But I never claimed that my comment proved anything, other than my personal experience being that traditional gender roles are still alive and well in some circles (not what I said, but I'm assuming this is what you construed from it). So I'm in the wrong for not adding YMMV at the end of it? Come on.

Wasn't trying to. It was an anecdote. Not everything needs to be scientifically provable.

EDIT: why does aidrocsid have downvotes? He was explaining himself. Read through some of his subsequent comments here, as he explained his thought process pretty well.

Also, the downvote button is not the "disagree" button.

Agreed, the idea of gender-specific hobbies and skills is just such an alien concept to me - though I understand that gender roles in 2012 are much different than those 60 years ago.

I'm personally not too interested in sewing, but my wife is a big vintage clothing collector and has that itch, so I can see where you're coming from.

Most of the friends that joke about these activities are metalheads (like me), which of course skews any kind of generalization you'd want to make about them. And no, the sample size is not very large or diverse, but then again, I wasn't trying to make generalizations, just add my personal experience.

The fact that they are part of metal culture - which is mainly interested in being 'hard' or generally masculine - plays a big part. Also it's not like it happens all the time, or if it bothers me. My ability to grow bushels of tomatoes has no effect on my ability to shred on guitar, and they all know it.

I loved Little Nemo! I remember renting it for a weekend from the video store (ahhh childhood summer memories) and getting really frustrated with it though. I was probably 6 or 7.
