German court rules that YouTube is responsible for what users put online - BBC news by khennessin technology

[–]iansmith6 0 points1 point ago

How would that work? I certainly don't know which of the millions of songs out there are protected and which are free to use, and which have had copyrights expire. I doubt random people clicking a flag button would know.

Even if they did and were 100%, even if Google only had to check those flagged videos, that's still going to be a HUGE amount of work. Far more than they can handle. They get 60 HOURS of video uploaded every minute. That's 3,600 people watching 24 hours a day with no breaks just to observe new stuff, let along go over older material.

I took a single, unsealed envelope and mailed it to myself.

I just got it, here is a picture... http://imgur.com/Y07DV

The envelope is the kind where it has a peel off strip with glue under it. You can see the strip is still there. It's still perfectly usable. I'll put a newspaper clipping in there in a week and show it to friends as proof I can time travel.

German court rules that YouTube is responsible for what users put online - BBC news by khennessin technology

[–]iansmith6 -1 points0 points ago

Here is what Google needs to do. They have been told not to show videos without pre-screening them first. SO they do exactly that.

Add a 'feature' so that German viewers can not view a video that has not been run through whatever system the courts demand. When that video comes up, but a big, "CENSORED DUE TO COURT RULING X".

As videos get processed they get put online. It will remove pretty much everything new, while not takign teh site completely offline. Just making it horribly broken. Then see how teh public reacts to that.

Of course they will probably hate on YouTube, not the court that forced them to do it.

This is bad advice. The mailing yourself things as a time evidence is a myth. Won't hold up in any court.

Easy proof as to how useless is is... mail yourself an empty unsealed envelope, keep it around and put stuff in it later and seal it up.

My dad is afraid of heights.

Every year we went on vacation and crossed this bridge.

Watching his knuckles turn white was always my favorite part of the trip.

Ignoring all the other issues, she would need a lot of data for that, and I don't think they publish that sort of information. I find this highly dubious.

I think you mean that sadly it doesn't break the first law.

Most scientists would sell their grandmother if it meant overturning a long held theory and opening up an entire field for new discoveries.

Plus... I want my perpetual motion machine and those laws are in the way.

Hamsters are fun! by foreveralonemurrayin fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

[–]iansmith6 1 point2 points ago

I had a small "hamster ball" for a mouse I had. Put it on the floor to see what my cats would do.

It rolled at them, touched one and he jumped straight up and climbed the wall to get away.

More physically advanced? I have to call bull on this. Was this a peer reviewed study? Genes and testosterone levels and how hard the parents push for them to be athletic are going to be at work here, not swinging a baby around by the arms.

I did this as a teenager.

Pointed at a fly, said "DIE" and it just dropped.

My friend looked at me like I was the devil.

The fly recovered after about a minute, kinda ruining the moment.

How Tax Work-Arounds Undermine Our Society -- Loopholes, poor regulations, and off-shore havens allow corporations and the very wealthy to draw on the benefits of a strong nation-state without fully paying back in, eroding a system that's less tested than we might think. by slaterhearstin politics

[–]iansmith6 0 points1 point ago

So if the wealthy get so rich that one person ends up controlling all the money, they would end up paying 100% of the taxes so that's totally fair to all the indentured slaves toiling in misery and poverty?

It just boggles my mind that people fall for that. If I rob you at gunpoint but pay taxes on what I steal, that makes it fair? Seriously?

I played this on the PC. If it's the same game with the same levels, it's very fun but at later levels is EXTREMELY hard. Certainly worth $3.

Android Geiger Counter by CDefense7in Android

[–]iansmith6 0 points1 point ago

I'd test it but don't want to spend $5 just to see if it works or not. I assume it probably works... for very strong sources, and not very accurate. CCD's are certainly sensitive to radiation, so it's a solid idea but not going to be anything close to using a real Geiger counter.

I can't imagine it's useful for any real purpose.

Ads in nearly every app. Can I block these? by rookayyyin Android

I have a few apps I use that don't have paid versions, and have ads in places that actually block some of the interface. I agree with what another redditor said though, contact the author and explain your problems, but don't block ads.

Take away the porn and the people will listen. Please consider contacting XVIDEOS + other tube sites and ask them to join the blackout on January 18th to spread SOPA/ProtectIP awareness. (link SFW) by Alexanderrin technology

[–]iansmith6 -1 points0 points ago

The problem with a lot of these blackouts is the companies involve don't want to lose customers.

What happens when Google blacks out? Or a porn site? People will not just stop looking up things or watching porn. They will go somewhere else. And some of those people will like what they find and not go back when the blackout is over.

So I don't have much hope for any of the big players joining the blackout.

What cultural practice do you wish your own culture would adopt? by [deleted]in AskReddit

[–]iansmith6 353 points354 points ago

Korean style waiters.

Each table has a button that rings a bell. When you press it, a waiter comes to your table to refill your glass, take your order, whatever you need. Then they go back to their break room and don't bother you until you need them again.

No trying to catch their eye, no "HOWS YOUR FOOD!" right when you take a bite. No fake smiles and shoulder touches hoping for a bigger tip, because you don't tip. They get paid a wage, just like any other worker.

Makes for such a better dining experience.
