Vote now in the final round of the Best of 2011 Awards by hueypriestin blog

[–]hueypriest[S] 10 points11 points ago

For the year end Best of awards, we have always (or at least as long as I can remember) used a special code that hides votes, and randomizes the order of the final round nominees.

Yeah, this time the plan for consistence was foiled by my incompetence but next year, we should name/define the categories better whether that's a hard cut off or some other guideline.

We just went by votes and made cut offs where there was a natural break in the top tier of nominations. Next year, we will have to have rules about size for Large and Small, but since we didn't have any this year, we just did the best we could.

Edit: you are right about /r/gaymers being in both incorrectly. That was an honest mistake by me. It is only in little now. We got behind on the awards with the whole blackout and clearly didn't proof this round enough.

Emerald City Comicon happens in a month (end of March): Can we get an Official Reddit Presence? by carelessin redditcon

Not sure anyone from reddit could make it up for that, but I can send some merch if you swear, legally swear, to hand it out and take some pictures.

Chris Hayes is doing his show on SOPA right now by IHuntin SOPA

[–]hueypriest 2 points3 points ago

Certain provisions do not apply, however as with everything in these bills the definitions are far too broad and vague. There are parts of SOPA that only apply to "US sites", others like the blacklist enforcement that apply to only US companies. As just one example, reddit uses the Italian TLD .it for it's link shortener redd.it. Under the wording of the bill this could be viewed as a foreign site.

He is incorrect (no matter how loudly or forcefully he asserts otherwise) because the definitions involved are very broad and vague, and are ruled upon without adequate due process. For example, there are plenty of circumstances one could imagine a judge ruling that reddit is "foreign site" based on the broad definitions in the actual language of the bills. Furthermore, the burden on enforcing the "blacklist" upon sites like reddit (which would be considered a search engine under the definition of the bill) would either be technically difficult and/or financially prohibitive. It also opens up whole new areas of liability for users and websites, while making services that comply with private rights of action requested by copyright holders and the copyright holders themselves immune from liability should their copyright claims be invalid.

When he was talking about liability he was referring to the liability of service providers that comply with copyright holders private rights of action. As in, reddit would not be liable for making a mistake or removing links from our site, which later turned out to be based on invalid copyright claims by private parties. Neither would copyright holders be liable for sending out fraudulent claims, as they have repeatedly and aggressively done under DMCA. The entire bill is designed to give maximum power and minimum responsibility to copyright holders. the unintended consequences and potential for abuse are potentially devastating. But he seemed to be talking very forcefully, so I guess we're just supposed to trust him on it.

Thanks, mybad007! We appreciate it. Any financial losses from the blackout are nothing compared to the financial losses we'd suffer if this thing passes.

We do allow it, but a "submission que" scares me. If it's for discussion, feedback, etc then great! If it's only links going a certain site, then that's another animal. Something like /r/spacechem would be awesome. hadn't seen that before, but looks like an excellent way to use a subreddit to me.

Taking Community Creation to its Logical Extreme by gentlebotin TheoryOfReddit

[–]hueypriest 2 points3 points ago

My take on it would be "community of communities". I'm sure there is sexier way to phrase it, but that is how I feel about it. We also use "community platform" sometimes, especially in media with platform being key to differentiate that we do not have editorial control. Sometimes we discuss it as an "attention aggregator", as opposed to a "link aggregator" when it started. To be honest I don't know if there is really a perfect descriptor out there, and even if there was it may not always be accurate as reddit continues to evolve.
