a big part of it is microsofts deep marketing pockets.

the og release they spent more on that launch then any console ever. They continue to drop way too much. Ive worked at a few electronics mega stores and MS buys out all kinds of nasty marketing habits.

One store I used to work for got MS vista 2 months early if they agreed to not sell wii hardware for 6 months. Crap like that.
