Let's clarify what an Ent actually is... by J4sonin trees

[–]heybigpancakes 0 points1 point ago

Just don't let it bother you. The more you try and filter, classify, exclude and judge... the more things in general bother you.

Live and let live. Be the change you want to see. Change is generational and gradual (except when it's not... in times of great turmoil...something I don't think anyone really wants to live through).

Be what you feel an ent should be to the people around you. Don't tell them what they should be.

Rape of women in DR Congo 'tops 1000 a day' by StinkYourTrollopin worldnews

[–]heybigpancakes 6 points7 points ago*

They have children because that's what they have to do. Child mortality is so high you need to have many children because you don't expect them to survive. Couple that with the fact that most people live a subsistence living, children help with your labor. It's how families work without technology.

These people are caught in a strange world limbo. They don't have access to the tools they need to move up socio-economically (like education, a stable government, infrastructure, money) and corruption will not allow them to live a subsistence life.

We're more to blame for their situation than they are.

Edit: If none of you believe that your government has artificially propped up dictators and encouraged discord from behind the scenes because it's beneficial to our economic goals, then I think you're burying your head. I don't mean 'we're' to blame you and me. I mean western government policy and corporate influence.

It's not a guilt trip when it's documented facts. There are lots of people and parties and you can't lump the poor village folk into the same bucket as the corrupt dictators that run their countries with support from western governments and corporations.

Insightful article challenging racism in Chicago's LGBT community, specifically one incredibly racist website. by lushrim_baughin chicago

Honestly, I don't see an issue. I'm a 28 year old gay male that lives in Boystown and I found When In Boystown to be hilarious. People really need to get a sense of perspective....

A $20 Trillion Rock Could Turn a Startup Into Earth's Richest Company by tulriw9din science

[–]heybigpancakes 4 points5 points ago

Not that they actually have any figures yet, but the article makes no mention of the estimated extraction costs. A shuttle launch (when we still launched the shuttle) cost an estimated $450 million in 2011, according to NASA. And that shuttle only went into earth orbit. Will we move this asteroid to earth orbit to mine it, or trip there and back? The technologies and logistics involved will cost hundreds of billions, possibly even trillions to develop. Then there are the ongoing operating expenses....

I can't wait for this to happen. It's going to happen. I just want more information.

When working in a fast food restaurant, this guy is an unsung hero. by keithfinnin AdviceAnimals

[–]heybigpancakes 3 points4 points ago

Of course. I'm not debating that shadiness happens. Only that every time it DOES happen, it's illegal. It will continue as long as the staff remains in ignorance of the law.

That's why you have to report it. If it doesn't get reported, the policies in place to correct the wrong can never be implemented.

Yeah. Or they get fined and sued. Happens all the time. If it's happening to you, report it. They aren't optional laws.

Except that's why labor laws exist, and it's illegal to make people work for no pay. At least, that's the way it works in the United States.

hey /r/chicago! about to start a small local dog walking business and wanted your thoughts on it by heybigpancakesin chicago

[–]heybigpancakes[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the thorough feedback! I really appreciate it. To answer your questions-

No limit on off hours walks. I'm doing this solo and really don't a whole lot of clients and therefor don't expect a lot of odd hours requests. Plus I'm only taking on clients that are within a couple of miles of my house, so going out at weird hours doesn't really bother me.

The money isn't the driving factor, so I figure I have the time to devote to the dogs I take on to do it right. I'm in it to learn... the paycheck is just a bonus.

I'll make sure I fix those typos too! After so many hours staring at the screen, sometimes simple things escape me.

Good suggestion on the picture, too. I've never been a big photo taker so I'm going to need to engineer some sort of cute situation. Perhaps I can get some karma out of it too...

Have a great weekend!

That's basically what I'm doing. I tried to convey it in the website. I can try to be more clear :)

That's a pretty good idea, however I'm not professionally certified to train dogs. I've read many books and watched more than my fair share of the dog whisperer.

I would spend my time with every dog ensuring their proper behavior during a walk. I feel that real, honest training would be best done in a calm and controlled setting with the owner present.

There is a big demand for dog training out there and some day I hope to be able to fill that demand. Among my goals in the years before I complete my vet degree I would like to take grooming and training classes; perhaps going so far as to be certified in both.

Thank you for the feedback. Honestly I'd have no issue going to Webster. I was thinking of making the southern boundary Armitage anyway, which would cover you.

I live at 3000 N Lincoln and if I'm going as far north as 4000N (Irving) but only south as far as 2400N (Fullerton) I'm going almost twice as far north as I am to the south. Only makes sense to go to at least 2000N (Armitage).

If you're interested I'd be happy to discuss you're needs.

Scumbag family profits from son's death by OCDTriggerin WTF

[–]heybigpancakes -1 points0 points ago

Who are you to be an internet judge that they're scumbags. Pretty sure Cindy Sheehan does the same thing. Probably many others. They're collecting money so they can go on the road to be advocates and still support themselves because they aren't filthy rich like the little white girls parents that die and get bills named after them, like Megan's Law.

Stop making judgments with limited information. You're no better than Nancy Grace when you do.

How we do things here by N0thinBett3rin WTF

[–]heybigpancakes -2 points-1 points ago

I bet you there are thousands of kids that COULD have been able to play at his level, had they dedicated themselves and loved the sport as much as pro QBs do. He's lucky; he was born with the right genes to do what he loves to do. Then he did it.

He simply gets paid so much because there are only so many pro QB slots to fill, and SO much money gets poured into the sport. It's really simple economics.

Just draw an analogy to the military. That grunt in the picture is only good enough for little league (or whatever the foozeball equivalent is... I played baseball obv). Eli was good enough to be the seal that shot bin Laden in the head.

The seal that shot bin Laden in the head died in a plane crash and we dont know his name. his family wont even get a death benefit thats 1/10th what Eli gets paid in a year.
