I've been fraudulently charged for advertisements I didn't get and I have proof. What can I do? by Ryugiin Etsy

[–]hepafilter 0 points1 point ago

Well, that's up to you. But it's not a 'maybe'. You're obviously mistaken. You'll end up in collections, and they'll charge the card you signed up with, which you'll have to fight. You'll never be able to sell on Etsy again. You may change your mind in the future.

They don't call the showcase a newbie tax for nothing. Good luck.

[Makers - Question] Etsy's New Direct Checkout do you use it? by herartshelovesin Etsy

[–]hepafilter 1 point2 points ago

If you're small scale, you're paying 2.9%, not 2.5. 2.5 is only for sellers taking in more than $3,000 a month. You get 2.2 if you're taking in more than 10K

I just got it a bit ago, and I like it so far. The biggest pain is the initial 10-day hold.

If you're not a high-volume seller, and your items are under $20 or so, I believe Etsy is a little cheaper. Paypal charges .30 a transaction + 2.9%, Etsy is .25 a transaction + 3.0%. For me personally paypal is cheaper because I pay a lower Paypal rate due to volume. But the difference for me is about .03 per transaction, which isn't a huge deal.

That's because showcases are a waste of money. You're not guaranteed any views with showcases. I've never seen Etsy accused of not running a showcase before. Trust me, your proof isn't proof.

Your proof does not show a showcase slot. It shows search ads. Those are two completely different things. They look similar, but they are not. Showcases aren't attached to a specific search. One only sees them when one clicks on one of the categories from the front page.

Showcases are at the top category level only.

The items at the top of this page:

http://www.etsy.com/category/art?ref=fp_ln_art

Are showcase slots.

You would've had to look at the top of the category you advertised in.

What category did you buy a showcase slot in? I can show you where it appeared.

Hey there...

I think your shop is really cool. I am by no means an expert on either jewelry or fashion, so take my advice with a grain of salt...

Your shop is comprised of two different types of items... your printed horror dresses and your jewelry. Here are my ideas:

1) This might sound counter productive, but you should triple the cost of the eyeball and teeth bracelets. You hand paint each one? How long does it take you? Are you paying yourself $4 an hour? I would spend some money on higher-quality elastic. I think they'd sell well at $25, especially the teeth bracelet.

... but

You need to work on your pictures. This will really help. The main picture of your teeth bracelet is washed out. Half the pictures of your dresses are a little blurry and are not color correct.

Also, this might sound a little hypocritical coming from me, but I would rethink the photoshop method you use with your dresses. They're really, really cool, but I don't think the way you present them works. I would find some attractive, tatted up models and reshoot them all using the real dresses with real people. The way you have it now is a good idea, but I honestly don't think it's doing you any favors.

Your 97% feedback isn't going to help you, either. They're all coming from the same item... your eyeball bracelet. I would look into why that is so. I would consider splitting your store, making the dresses into one store, the jewelry into another. I have 5 stores, and I find splitting them is actually better than keeping it together.

Your tags could use a little work, like courtneyj suggests. Phrases work better than specific words.

Again, you have really cool stuff. Good luck with it.

[Vintage] Etsy Recommends That Sellers Don't Have Multiple Shops. How Do People Feel About This? by krystin71in Etsy

[–]hepafilter 0 points1 point ago

Well, honestly I put 95% of my effort in one shop... as that shop gets 95% of my orders, and my 12-year-old actually semi-manages one of them.

About 3 months ago I had to quit my full-time job because I couldn't do both. So it's working out well.

I have 5 Etsy shops. If you wrangle your email all into one account, it's not a big deal. I haven't had much of an issue with it.

It's important for a shop to have a brand. When you are too diverse, you won't connect with buyers.

True story... I forced my wife to go with me to a show on the Octavarium tour. She looked around the room and said, 'This sure is a sausage fest.'

I've seen DT live many times. I can confirm the ratio is usually pretty skewed. I imagine if you remove all the girls who were dragged there, it'd be even worse.

My daughter started using that term the other day, and after I inquired I learned she learned it from an episode of Toddlers and Tiaras. It's become a running joke.

Incidentally, I think most people realize that the whole purpose of that show is to troll the parents of these kids.

They are. They just announced season 3 officially, which will most likely end on the scene that must not be named. The creators have said many times book 3 will be encompassed by two seasons.

In the UK the book is split into two.

I'm pretty rude? I just spent 10 minutes giving you an asked-for critique. I don't think I said anything rude. I don't think I said anything even remotely rude. If you're talking about the 'dark and unappealing' line, I was talking about the pictures themselves, not the art.

Your listings, as of this moment, say they ship from the UK, so you haven't fixed it.

Photography is worth more than half a penny. A tale about how image credit doesn't pay for rent. by jjsweein photography

[–]hepafilter 14 points15 points ago

I don't know the details on this project, and I certainly don't disagree with the artist in the OP, but I think the estimated costs associated are really off.

I have made and designed calendars for a long time, and I have spent the last 10 years putting such projects together and professionally printed, and I'd like to think I know a little of what I'm talking about. Assuming the calendar sells retail for about $12, the publisher will likely get about $4-5 of that a calendar, and of the 20,000, I think it's pretty safe to assume they'll only sell about 90% of them. So $18,000 x 5 is more lie $90K gross. The printing on it even at that volume is going to really depend on the quality... .50 each to about 2.50 each. I'm guessing it'll be in the 1.50 range + another .50 each getting them to the proper distributors. (The $1 figure he came up with is probably from quoting online calendar makers, but those quoted prices are always a little ... unreliable, for a reason too long to go into here.)

Not including salaries or anything, I think a 50K profit is a much more realistic amount.

That said, I think about $500 a month, so they pay about 6K for art is right on the money. The offer WAS insulting, but I think we need to be realistic.

[–]hepafilter 0 points1 point ago

Are you asking for criticism on the art or the store itself?

For the store, you're partly there, but you need to work on it a bit.

You say you ship from the UK, but your location in Etsy is Phoenix, which is going to kill your 'shop local' searches.

You need a banner. Your policies needs to be filled out. If you are in the UK so you're required to put your full name and address in policies by some weird law. I would search around on info about that.

http://www.etsy.com/listing/96477377/wall-art-oil-painting-cardinals-in

The above listing has no size in it. Plus, you don't really say what it is. Is it already stretched?

Your shipping prices are outrageous. I would suggest shipping rolled, unstretched. Or talk to other artists to see how they do it.

I would work on your pictures. They're dark and unappealing and don't show your work in its best light. The coolest feature of this listing: http://www.etsy.com/listing/96327053/collage-wall-art-22x30-romance-and is the book pages, and I almost missed it. I would include a close-up.

You need to use all 14 or your tag slots. "complimentary colors" is one of your tags, and I suspect you mean complementary.

Good luck!

I'm not sure what that other guy's issue is, but I think it's a cool design. If your freehand skills are good enough, I'm not really sure what you're asking. If I were doing it, I'd design it in illustrator and have someone cut it in vinyl so it'd be nice and crisp, and I would apply it carefully. But I'm not a great freehand artist.
