What's the most interesting thing you can't share with anyone you know? by Gawkesin AskReddit

[–]havntreddit 37 points38 points ago

Switched back to an old account so I don't get linked to my regular account.

This isn't that big of deal, but my net worth is about $1.1 million. Now, there are literally millions of millionaires in the US, so it's not like this is all that rare. I'm from a middle class family, and although I make a decent income I've just saved very carefully for about 15 years. It kind of bums me out that I really wanted to throw a party when I crossed the millionaire mark, but it's not something that you can really talk about.

Wait, so that scale is from one Michael Cera to one Michael Cera.? I'll bet that results in some pretty dull graphs.

This is the case. You can leave any time unless they arrest you. You don't have to say anything to the police before, during, or after your arrest.

All cats are schizophrenic. They all attack imaginary objects and will go from purring happily to trying to bite your hand or scratch at you in a moment. It's a good thing they're so cute and cuddly.

TIL about what "White Privilege" really is, and why you should learn about it. by SolInvictusin todayilearned

This looks like false use of statistics: 1 000 000 black people died from 1991-2001 for not having the same health insurance of an average white person.

First, that's awful, and I do believe that white people on average have better health insurance than black people and that needs to change. Hopefully the new health care law makes a dent in that.

But, there are 350,000,000 people in this country. Lets say 200,000,00 of them are white. So that means 100 million white people don't have the same health insurance that an average white person has (by definition of average). I wouldn't be surprised if a million white people died because they didn't have "average white person" health insurance either.

DAE from America think we're a second rate country and can't understand why people are so patriotic? by [deleted]in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]havntreddit 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't really get patriotism as a thing. That being said, I'm glad I live in a first world country (I was born in and live in the US), but I think I'd be just as happy in western Europe, Australia, probably South Africa, etc.

I am happy in principal that the US was one of the first countries founded without a religion as the foundation of the right to rule.

Yes, but they showed the thing on TV before release day. How did they get one and put it on TV without the cops breaking down their doors? Could it have anything to do with ABC being owned by Disney, and Steve Jobs being Disney's biggest single share holder?

These satellites are all in geostationary orbit. You could leave GPS on in 90% of the world and turn off GPS in, say, the Middle East and only affect angry Middle Eastern soccer moms (who aren't allowed to drive anyway).

What's your best run-in with the law/police story? by lordoftheflies5RT6in AskReddit

[–]havntreddit 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My only run-ins were while I was in the back seat of a car with a particular girlfriend in the late eighties. We were still in high school, so the car was all we had. Anyway, the classy cops would shine their spotlight in the car from 20 feet away, maybe speak on the loud speaker and give us a few minutes to get dressed. The jerks tried to get a free peak of previously mentioned girlfriend.

Looking for small breed suggesitions! by yay4tayin Pets

[–]havntreddit 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Observe both a shih-tzu and a border collie. If you live in a small space and want a dog that will be happy to spend its days sitting on your lap, you have a much better chance with the shih-tzu (which was literally bred to be a lap dog). If you want to move sheep between pastures, you will probably be disappointed with the shih-tzu.

So while you're right, there is no guarantee that every border collie will be a champion herder, there has never been a shih-tzu with the energy, agility, obedience and speed to be a champion herder. On the other side of that coin, there are very few people who have happy border collies who don't have jobs to do.

Breed isn't everything, and with mutts you can't always know the breed anyway, but it's ludicrous to not take it into account if you do know what the breed is.

DAE think Godwin's law inspired an overreaction and now people dismiss Nazi analogies even when they are valid? by commentjudgein DoesAnybodyElse

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My morality is based on the golden rule (or kind of a social contract in a non-governmental sense). It is in our best interests to create a world that is safe for everyone to live in -- because otherwise we will likely eventually fall into the unsafe portion of the population. I try to act in a way that would result in the world I wish to live in if everyone acted the same. I'm far from perfect in that regard, but it's pretty clear that genocide is right out :)

I'm pretty sure the holocaust was wrong, but I respect your reasoning so I'm upvoting you anyway. You are correct that many (most?) historic societies were perfectly fine with genocide. I think that says more about them than us, but your logic is fair.

I agree with you on applications on the iPhone, and you can certainly dislike the prices. But the itunes store doesn't have any DRM on their music, and you can put any mp3 onto the iPhone (or any ipod).

That means you can buy music from apple and play it on as many PCs or mp3 players as you want. You can convert it to mp3 IN ITUNES if you want.

You can purchase music from anywhere you want (including Amazon.com) or even rip CDs with itunes (or whatever else you like) and put it on your ipod/iphone/ipad/whatever. For music, hardware/software are both pretty acceptable to me. I guess you do actually have to run itunes on at least one PC, but it IS free.
