It's pretty clear that the majority of the big players and most of the key high-end game experiences are focused on consoles first these days. Sure, WoW. Sure, there are some popular PC games. Sure Runescape and lots of indie games. But you can't deny the vast resources that are being poured into console game development these days (with some amazing results, like Uncharted 2).

This isn't so much about UNIX as it about a small group of tools that are normally associated with UNUX, but can be run on most platforms: csh, awk, etc.

Lots of programmers have personal libraries they use in all their projects. Nothing major, just pet shortcuts and utility functions and so on. Arc is Paul Graham's personal add-on for Common Lisp. That's it really. Nothing wrong with that. The 6+ years of hype and what everyone assumed to be intense development from an expert programmer...well, they led to somewhat higher expectations.

You're just wallowing in pity, and it makes no sense. The PC market was GROWING LIKE MAD in the mid 1990s. DOOM. Command & Conquer. 3D acceleration. Windows 95. DirectX. Online play. No one was saying it was dying. To the contrary, a lot of people expected PCs to finally put and end to dedicated game consoles.

Heck, even vim gets this wrong, writing data directly into "c:\program files\vim".

Now wait a minute. Vim allows access to the shell BY DESIGN. It's supposed to. You can easily write a vim script that deletes files or whatever, just like you can write a Ruby program that deletes files.

How is this an exploit any more than an arbitrary Perl script is an exploit?
