I thought of synecdoche but didn't think it applied here.

What book are you most upset that people haven't read? by EwokShepherdin books

Not everyone likes Canadiana, environmentalist fiction, postmodernism, slick pop-culture satire, or indeed fiction/literature. Don't imply I'm not "well read" because I don't share the same preferences as you.

This is some Occupy Wall Street bullshit, not libertarian. LADY LIBERTY is feeding fat capitalists? What the hell is that supposed to imply for free markets? Lady Liberty is not a symbol of the state!

That What is Life book is fantastic! I won it in a draw on Physorg.com a few years back and enjoyed every word of it. You're in for a treat.

Have you ever stood up for a stranger? If so, what was it like and how did it turn out? by the_wizard_guyin AskReddit

It was one of those really long buses with a divider in the middle, and we were sitting near to the back. Also the bus company in my city employs nothing but losers and assholes, it seems.

This was around 12:00 at night on a Friday. I was on a bus sitting across from a shifty looking older man who appeared to be drunk, and near a mid-30s woman leaning against the window listening to music. The woman was looking REALLY HARD out the window, and the man was staring at her in a rather unappetizing way. Not long after I sat down, the man leaned over to the woman and said, "You look cute like that." The woman looked extremely uncomfortable but unwilling to say anything. I was pretty much immediately on alert and started to keep an eye on him. A few minutes later he reached over and touched her purse, trying to get her attention, but went back to his seat when she ignored him. Strike two. Finally at some point he gets up and starts to try to sit down next to her. The woman looks like she wants to die. Strike three.

I look around, I can see that everyone else is just as uncomfortable, but no one wants to say anything, so I speak up: "Excuse me, you need to leave her alone." The guy stands up, half-staggers over to me, and starts loudly berating me, telling me I need to mind my own business. I interject, "Listen, I don't care. You just need to sit down and leave that woman alone." The guy then challenges me to a fight. I should mention at this point that I'm 5'1" and female. There's no way I'm going to have a fight with this guy. But I don't think he's serious. So I just repeat, "no, I don't want to fight you. You need to sit down." He keeps arguing. I keep repeating myself.

Finally the next stop comes and the guy stumbles off the bus. Everyone in my vicinity bursts out laughing, partly at the absurdity of the situation and partly in relief. Another man sitting across from me asked, "How did you do that?" Honestly, I don't even know.

Actually, no, I don't think I've ever heard anyone praising "government" as such. They just seem to take it for granted that we all want the state to enact our desires and only differ in what those desires are.

I just got put on prescription SSRI anti anxiety meds at age 27 , reddit what are your experiences with these types of drugs? by LuckaGamerin AskReddit

I was on Cipralex for about a year. The side effects weren't too bad. At first I lost some weight (about five pounds) because I had indigestion all the time and couldn't really eat. That lasted around two weeks. After that I gained back the five pounds plus five more, but no more after that. I had tooth grinding, but that also abated with time. As for whether it worked, well, I'd say if anything it added the "get out of bed and do what you have to do" factor to my life, but it didn't make me feel any better about it. However, even that small kick is invaluable to starting to get yourself back on track. Good luck.

Tutors (or instructors of any sort), how did you know you were good enough to do it? by Seepferdchenin AskReddit

[–]habroptilus 1 point2 points ago

If you know anyone younger than 15 (or better yet, younger than 10) who's generally curious about things and doesn't mind listening to a grownup ramble, see if you can get across the basics of a concept to them without confusing them too much. That's a good sign. But remember, just like anything else, it's not a gift, but a skill. You have to develop it.

A professional engineer, a PhD in cognitive science, and a PhD in American history. I go to college so none of those would be too hard to find.

No. I have a good relationship with my mother, but I disagree with her on almost everything fundamental in life, including the way she raised me.
