Tips on finger strength when not able to play bass? by ChrisHogiein Bass

[–]gtani 0 points1 point ago

stuff i don't necessarily recommend:

If you look at rock climbing books, there are things like towel hangs, and hanging off a chinup bar with 2 or 3 fingers. Lifting a jug of water with your index finger. (These exercises have a nontrivial risk of injury)

This si $10

if you have to buy stuff

stuff i would recommend: get used to carrying your instrument around, maybe with a headphone amp. Also get used to not taking your eye off it so it won't get ripped off.

If you have $80 and a laptop, consider a dinky MIDI controller

Beginner here. Buying my first guitar, haven't much money. by Rosencrantz202in guitarlessons

[–]gtani 0 points1 point ago

The issue with those inexpensive guitars is they're assembled quickly, I would play the specific guitar and amp you're going to buy, look for sharp fretwork, noisy or non-funcitoning electronics, gaps between body and neck, and any slight twist in the neck (sight along top and bottom of neck. This may be tricky cause often the fretwork is not even. Better is take a musician friend with you to try guitars

For inexpensive guitars, Ibanez, Squier's higher lines (CV,VM), Peavey, Yamaha and Axl seem to have consistently decent quality control. I've heard good things about Agile/rondomusic and guitarfetish but haven't seen any of them in person

(C++11)[http://www.manning.com/williams/]

(C#, Duffy)[http://www.amazon.com/Concurrent-Programming-Windows-Joe-Duffy/dp/032143482X/]

There are good resources for lockless data structures and different green/userspace thread models in GHC/Haskell, erlang, F# and scala/akka, as well

Guitar Center Question by snookerdoodlein Guitar

[–]gtani 1 point2 points ago

that sucks. Ask teh shops if their employees asked for drivers licenses. If you're anywhere near California, try to get your serial numbers on California's hot list and other neighboring states also. Also find out if your local police department has a $ threshold of loss that they have to do a meaningful investigation. It might be really high and it might be really hard to get to that number.

Anything you can do to get police detectives involved. Check your local paper's crime log and if you can convince the PD there's an active burglary ring out there.

Also make a list for yourself of any mods, dents/dings, weird wiring/components, anything distinctive those guitars had.

Excellent summaries! I might add that LSA is also called LSI "indexing" and is/was under patent, as a specific application of SVD.

I've seen some incredible guitars in pawn shops in West Coast US, also Ohio, Chicago, Milwaukee.

6 string fretless bass by Himmelmorderin Bass

[–]gtani 0 points1 point ago

Factory fretless 6's are relatively uncommon, aside from Warwick, which i think has a number of 6's with a fretless option, and the Fender Steve Bailey signature model (i don't thick Ibanez or Schechter have ever sold them, but google around

cramps in my left hand when holding chords. tried losening my grip but lose the fretted notes. help? suggestions? by Soundmantomin guitarlessons

[–]gtani 1 point2 points ago

The standard advice is lighter gauge strings, lower action, thumb/index barres, remove notes from chords selectively / alternate fingerings.

If I worked at GC, i would recommend they sell books by Ted Green, Guthrie Govan, Mick Goodrick, among others. I think Govan's book has lots of tips on this.

Are there honestly any discernible differences on whether you hold your pick between your thumb and pointer finger or any other way? by Stripedkoalain guitarlessons

[–]gtani 1 point2 points ago

This is an incredibly detailed analysis, it might help some people:

http://www.tuckandpatti.com/pick-finger_tech.html

But how you hold your pick is one variable, along with what size/thickness, whether you pinky anchor or heel of hand-anchor or you're picking close to neck pickup. Your mechanical technique consists of lots of things

watching SPJ talk about new GHC features cheerfully (at 27:45 into video) makes those features ok! (interview question: What do you think about Dart's optional static typing?)
