Stating certs on resume. by gex80in sysadmin

[–]grdlock 1 point2 points ago

I don't think I've ever interviewed a single person who wasn't "in progress" of some cert.

All I care about is what you've completed. Or maybe if you've taken an exam and not passed it, I would like to hear that, because at least then I know you're REALLY pursuing a cert, and not just saying you are to look better at the interview.

You know you're a nerd when you call fixing a hard drive "cowboy" shit.

(for the record, I'm agreeing with you, not poking fun!)

Why it's hard to find a good IT guy... by trevercjin sysadmin

[–]grdlock 4 points5 points ago

I like to think of myself as someone with a good personality and good people skills, who's GOOD at IT. I'm by no means one of the hardcore gurus that can do the most complex tasks with their eyes closed. But I'm a good technical problem solver, so I get my tasks done regardless.

I think it's fine to hire* a socially awkward genius on staff.... as long as they have very little interaction with anyone else. If you have a position that involves sitting inside a room in a data center all day, overseeing very important systems... that's where that person best fits!

I also think I'm underpaid as shit.

Caught a lazy person blaming IT by grdlockin talesfromtechsupport

[–]grdlock[S] 23 points24 points ago

Considering I've wiped this girl's computer down to the factory image, replaced her ram, etc... I seriously doubt that for some fluke reason her software is still crashing on a brand new computer 100% identical to every other machine we have in the company.

At one point I was tempted to swap her computer out with one in the office next to her just to see what she said... never got around to it, though.

I'll be honest with you, I'm not that hot with Excel and parsing tons of data and writing custom forumlas to pull individual data out of fields, etc, like what would be needed to do this most likely.

There's the spreadsheet of data though. If someone else who's an Excel guru wants to do this, I'd love to see it, too!

Verizon to kill grandfathered unlimited data plans for customers upgrading to LTE devices by See_Jayin Android

Ahh, I actually have a Galaxy Nexus now. Just never changed my bling. :D

Verizon to kill grandfathered unlimited data plans for customers upgrading to LTE devices by See_Jayin Android

[–]grdlock 14 points15 points ago

This will be the key point for me. I'm already grandfathered into unlimited LTE data also.

If I go to upgrade my device when my current contract is over and they force me to go into a tiered plan, I'll tell them to shove it up their ass and switch to Sprint.

IT is not your on-call bitch. by StrangeCaptainin sysadmin

[–]grdlock 21 points22 points ago

What really annoys me is people who never even tell me they have a problem, or never file a ticket for it.... then they go bitch to their manager that their software has been screwed up for two weeks and they're behind on their work, then the manager comes to me asking why they've been having a problem so long.

I CANT FIX WHAT I DON'T KNOW IS BROKEN!

Your manager, your buddy in the cube next to you, your pet dog, your wife... are all the WRONG people to tell that you're having a problem with your computer!

Results from the /r/sysadmin survey by grdlockin sysadmin

[–]grdlock[S] 18 points19 points ago

Oh, and once again, I apologize for not thinking the questions and responses through 100% prior to posting the original survey! Like I told a few, I did it on a whim. So yes, I didn't really account for people outside the US like I should have. I also should have done the answers to some questions different, such as salary where the choices were 20-30,000, 30-40,000, etc. Should have been 20-29,999, 30-39,999, etc. There could have also been more choices to some questions, and certain questions I could have asked but didn't. Sorry, I just didn't think of some of it! :)

A lot more people took the survey than I expected though, so regardless of the fudges, I think it still gives a pretty good overview of the /r/sysadmin audience.

The IT job survey by grdlockin sysadmin

[–]grdlock[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, a few people pointed that out already. I noticed I did it afterwards, too. But by then it's too late to go back and change the answers without re-doing the entire survey, as it would skew the results.

Yes, meant it to be in USD. I made this on a whim, didn't even think to specify that!

I realized I did that afterwards. I think people can do their best to estimate around it, though.

How often do you feel burned out at your job? by grdlockin sysadmin

Not a bad idea... I'm making up a form on Google docs right now to do this. :)

Windows admins, what browser do you use on your servers? by callmetomin sysadmin

[–]grdlock 3 points4 points ago

Seeing as how I rarely use the browser on my servers, when I do I typically just use IE because it's built-in. I don't see the point in installing extra software on my server than what is needed.

I usually browse and find whatever I need in Chrome on my desktop, then just copy the URL into IE on the server to go directly to where I need to be.

All my computers at my company have LogMeIn on them. It has a "Lock Host Keyboard/Mouse" button on it. I love that button. I usually click it the second I remote into someone's computer.
