I have never heard a satisfactory explanation for the active camouflage of some octopi and chameleon's to mimic their surroundings down to the details.

We've all seen it- nature shows where an octopus changes in a moment to blend in seamlessly with a multi-colored seafloor below, down to the pebbles and grains of sand.

How do they do this? Do they mentally take stock of their surroundings and imitate it? How do they do it so fast? What chemical reaction is taking place inside the animal?

What does music sound like to dogs and cats? Since they have different hearing ranges, would they only pick up the high or low notes of a song? Is it possible for them to enjoy music?

I play a lot of music at home, and I'll often leave a classical station on when I leave for my pets to listen to, hoping it will relieve their boredom. It occurred to me though that if they don't hear in the same range, that music might just sound repetitive rather than melodic. Your thoughts?

I work in a four person business currently running in the garage of a house owned by 2 of the partners, a married couple, call them Joe and Amy.

I was working with the remaining partner, "Tom" in the garage on Tuesday, and Amy left a note asking for us to let their dogs out to do their business. I left the back door open and the backyard fences closed so they could come out, but they stayed in a back bedroom all day. Was called by Amy in the late afternoon who asked if they went out, I said no, and she seemed unhappy with that answer, so I said I'd try to get them to come out.

Tom and I called to the dogs, tried to lure them with treats, and when that failed, I went up to one who was sitting on a bed. He's an older dog I've known for 2.5 yrs, who can be alternately affectionate and aggressive to me. His expression was placid, and I thought "maybe he can't see me due to weak eyesight or cataracts" so i put my hand forward so he could smell me and recognize me.

He snapped at it. I pulled away before he could get my hand but he latched onto my forearm. He held on until Tom rushed forward, at which point he lunged at him and gave him a superficial bite on the finger before running out of the room.

I went to a clinic a couple blocks away to have it treated (after doing what I could at home.) The bite left two holes on either side of my arm, one requiring 2 and the other requiring 4 stitches. The big wound was so gaping I could see the thin layer of fat between skin and muscle, pretty macabre.

The kicker is that this dog has bitten another friend before. Joe both then and now, blames the victims and excuses the dog. He says he'll pay medical expenses (only after I had to directly ask him to) and he was less than sympathetic, saying he was angry that I upset his dog and made a "stressful week even more stressful". I couldn't believe that I'm the one sporting the wound but he's the one that's angry.

I was floored by his lack of compassion and now I'm questioning whether such a self-centered unethical person should be my business partner. Tom and I are considering a split with the couple.

So what are your dog bite stories, and what would you do if you were me?
