What about his story is suspect? There are a ridiculous variety of ways that hallucinations manifest in schizophrenics. Just recently there was a thread [re: redditor w/schizo wife] in which people discuss this variety. I've linked to where the thread gets interesting, but the entire thing is worth reading.

What it comes down to is that the popular conception of schizophrenia is just plain wrong.
