I'm against hormonal birth control for females or males for health reasons (non-hormonal IUD for me), but I love the idea of male birth control being an option for those who would use it.

My source is the article I linked to above; their sources are all listed.

I'm sorry, but it really seems like you're trying to rationalize not having a social conscience because you'd prefer to make a quick buck. Think about the next generation.

What about social responsibility? FAS is the leading cause of mental retardation in children. Your future tax money goes to take care of them.

Then why don't you refuse them service? I'm genuinely curious.

Where is your business? Is the specific refusal to pregnant women covered by law, or would you have to make up an excuse like my manager wanted me to?

Agreed. It really makes me question doctors who prescribe alcohol 'medicinally.' Alcohol is never prescribed for medical purposes at any other time.

Just thought of something...how obviously pregnant?

She looked 8 months or so, absolutely unmistakably pregnant (also she was bitching about the pregnancy.) She hadn't dropped yet though. That's good insight about the C-section, I didn't know that.

How reaffirming to know that there are bartenders with a conscience.

Cheers to you! I wish I had stood up to my manager and just told this lady to GTFO. She was rich and high-maintenance though, probably easier to throw a skank out on her ass.

I agree, but the emotional impact of being the person who handed her the glass was a bigger horsekick than I would have thought.

Can you refuse to serve them specifically for being pregnant?

She did seem pretty stressed. Kept making comments like, "Oh god, I just want a drink!"

Although it really just made her sound like an alcoholic.

Actually the super sad part of this is that serving pregnant women becomes an issue only when they are visibly pregnant during the 3rd trimester - during which time some doctors do say it's okay to have a drink.

It makes me realize I could have served alcohol to dozens of pregnant women and had no idea because they weren't showing yet.

In the U.S. you can refuse alcohol to someone for no reason at all. Where are you?

Minnesota. And yes technically that's true but really only if they are visibly intoxicated. There is a horrible gray area concerning this - there is legal precedence for both serving and not serving pregnant women (I think that's federal precedence, not just state), so most bars err on the side of caution and don't put up a fight if a sober pregnant woman requests a drink - they can argue that doctors say it's okay in the 3rd trimester. (True - although I never would.)

I've worked at many restaurants and not one of them ever had an official "Don't Serve Pregnant Women" policy. Sad.
