really not getting you. We elect MPs here, don't we? So how are we not choosing the government?

[–]frymaster 0 points1 point ago

That said, I don't think the majority of people in Scotland will ever be truly happy as part of the UK

I genuinely don't know anyone in real life (as opposed to in online arenas like this, which have a wider reach) in favour of independence. Everyone either hasn't talked, or is in favour of the union

ability to pick our own government, on the basis that only once in postwar history has England not received the UK government it elected

Genuinely confused here, what do you mean? You seem to be implying all the Scottish parliament elections, and one of the UK ones, were corrupted, which I personally haven't heard a whisper of.

Don't think it's the PM. One of the ministers, though I can't remember which. Boris Johnson is also a big cyclist.

Opinions On Enchanting by jeb_in Minecraft

[–]frymaster 4 points5 points ago

Some ideas:

-make repairing use raw materials rather than another tool (ie 1 diamond repairs a third of a diamond pick) and then make enchanted items repairable at a greatly increased cost (ie one diamond repairs a sixth of a pick, maybe gold is more efficient)

-a slider to select what level to enchant at (up to the limit determined by bookshelves)

-be able to craft empty XP potions and then enchant them with your own XP, with some efficiency losses of course (ie put 20 levels in, get 15 out)

-be able to prepare items beforehand (craft them with a rare potion?) to alter the chances of getting a specific enchantment (ie make knockback more likely) without making it certain, and perhaps also reducing the chance of multiples

yes, but it doesn't say that everything an apostle says comes from God. Given the examples where Jesus's disciples try to speak for him , only for him to turn around and say pretty much the opposite, there's a strong suggestion that being touched by divinity doesn't grant any kind of infallibility.

I'm not in the US either. You can't buy PCs from MS they only make windows.

Signature is MS's "sell other people's computers but we get rid of the cruft first" range. Of course, since I'm not in the US, I don't know how their prices compare to the general market.

Certainly in the past, visual studio was deliberately priced so as to not undercut third party tools, since MS valued a large dev tool ecosystem above VS market share

TIL that MySQLdb doesn't use real bind parameters and instead just uses Python's string formatting to build SQL queries by mondaytuesdaywednesdin Python

[–]frymaster 13 points14 points ago

A shitload of sites got hacked a few years back because it turned out that the standard way of escaping strings for mssql wasn't aware of a specific encoding scheme. This basically meant attackers could add the " or 1=1; or whatever without actually having the quote marks in their attack string, and so it wasn't escaped out.

True, that was mssql, not mysql, but that's not to say that a similar exploit won't be found in the future.

Also, it misleads people (like me!) to believe that they are following best practices when it turns out they totally aren't.

just by being unique you'll block 90% of spam

Our user management is done via our forums (SMF), and spam bots manage to register all the time.

However, our site uses joomla for front-end content, and people log into the forums via joomla, which then handles logging them into the forums. The forums are programmed to ignore the presence of a login cookie if the user isn't logged into joomla first.

Our spam problem is essentially zero. Automated bots will use the standard SMF login page to log in and spam, and get absolutely nowhere.

Much better than a captcha by juitarin sysadmin

[–]frymaster 0 points1 point ago

Our forum registration page has a couple of those custom "defeat the spammer" question fields, and we also have a field for people's steamid (we're gaming-oriented)

We had a spambot with a steamid of "don't know".

This means there's abolutely real people sitting at PCs solving these things. I'd guess there's automated software that finds the forums, fills out known fields, presents the rest to the end-user to check, and that also handles the link in the registration email, and the actual posting.

McDonald's and Mojang have nothing to do with each other. This argument makes no sense.

Mojang's game and TES have nothing to do with each other either, yet people insisted that they weren't allowed to use common sense, and HAD to sue. How is this different?

had not defended their trademark they would have lost it.

this is not true. They would have not been able to sue for other similar levels on infringement. (ie if another company had come up with, say, a sci-fi themed RTS named Scrolls, then not suing Mojang for their fantasy CCG called Scrolls would be a defence)

The problem with the "everyone knows it's crazy but they have to let the court decide if it's infringing or not" argument is that, on that basis, McDonalds should also be suing Mojang for violating their trademark. I mean, everyone knows they aren't, but it has to be tested in court or McDs lose their trademark, right?
