Yes, I got them at the honors retreat too. It was still a great time, though! I thought the staff did a really great job of taking care of them. That facility seems to get bed bugs a lot, which makes sense since Cincinnati is one of the bedbug capitols of the country. =P

You couldn't throw your things in the dryer? There are two parts to getting rid of an infestation; you can't just throw pesticides at it.

Bedbugs easily travel around on clothing, purses, etc. Did you put all of these things in the dryer on "high" for at least an hour and then tie the items in garbage bags for at least a month? There very well might have been an inspection, and you or one of your neighbors (bedbugs do travel a lot throughout the night) unknowingly brought them back with you. Even if you didn't get bit while at home, the eggs take, on average, 20 days to hatch and also travel on personal items like clothing. There have even been reports of eggs inside of laptops. They're very difficult to get rid of.

You're right about this part, students succeeding at this high level could not have done it without the help of more experienced people.

As a finalist 2 years in a row ('07 and '08) who got 4th in my category doing heliophysics research completely by myself, up all night most nights because I'm addicted to it like crack, I'll have to disagree with you there. My parents are an artist and a lawyer, and my sister is in English. There isn't a scientist in my family and I had no mentors. So, it's possible to achieve by yourself at this high of a level, just a hell of a lot harder. It was so worth it, though, ISEF was a blast.

My mom couldn't "find the backspace button on this new keyboard". She had just bought herself a mac and was convinced that the delete button would delete the whole document. It took me about 30 minutes of convincing her (she's in SoCal and I'm in Ohio) over the phone that it was the same thing as a backspace button.

On the wheat note: gluten (the one in wheat/barley/rye) isn't bad for you unless you're intolerant/Celiac. Going gluten free isn't a weight loss diet, you just tend to eat healthier. Gluten-free replacement foods are often more caloric than what they're mimicking.

Other cool story: The department head of my major (Aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati) is friends with him since he used to teach a few aerodynamics and orbital mechanics courses here. He still comes by every now and then but likes to do things unannounced so I still haven't seen him. I get a kick out of the fact that people probably walk by him at all the time at mundane places like Kroger (he lives somewhere in Indian Hill) and don't realize who he is haha.

With chipotle, steer clear of the cheese and lettuce on the assembly line. The same person who wraps up the burritos sticks their hands in these toppings and therefore contaminates the whole thing. If you want lettuce, get it at the beginning where they usually start a salad bowl. Also be sure whomever does your bowl changes their gloves. Took me a while to figure this out lol

Along with what llellewyn said, you can have McDonald's McFlurries (M&M ONLY!!). I love them!! Buffalo Wild Wings' traditional wings are usually gluten free, just ask the manager if they use designated deep fryers. Get your sauce on the side.

The following sauces are gluten free according to this source.I personally have had no trouble with the medium, honey BBQ and hot BBQ sauces. Enjoy! =)

We drove in from the Southeast (we were staying in Lucca) and had a pretty adventurous drive in to say the least, lol. No guard rail on those narrow Italian roads with a cliff on the side? AHH! But we drove into Monterosso and then took the train to Riomaggiore and hiked the whole way back. It was amazing =)
