Time to migrate to a different site? by Neitsyt_Marianin circlebroke

[–]fallenmink 1 point2 points ago

In the past few months I've been browsing/posting to 4chan and lurking SA at about the same level that I did in high school (which is to say, a near-regrettable amount). Metafilter is nice, too, for links. Though not as much content.

Find me a good 'real' message board to post on that doesn't feel like an inclusive social club (besides the two mentioned already, of course), or some form of reward system, and I'll be all over it.

I'm still in the dark as to how it even came to exist. Or when.

It feels like it just happened randomly; I remember someone telling me "hey, look at this meme I made," and trying to figure out how one "makes" a meme. This was recent-ish, maybe 6(?) months ago. I always called them image macros, and thought everyone else did too.

To add to that, the narrator shows obvious remorse for his actions.

The defining aspect of Meursault as a character is his lack of remorse.

Am I a furry? by You_Shook_Mein furry

[–]fallenmink 2 points3 points ago

But basically liking the animal-human mix makes you furry, sure.

Arguably, by today's standards, it's more about embracing the fandom and the "lifestyle" that goes with it; self-definition and community involvement, basically.

It's such a damned vague question, though. We need a collection of these threads on the sidebar or something, since it seems to pop up at least weekly. :\

It causes such a glorious shitstorm.

Emotional detachment? Considering how online interactions go, even when PG-rated, if someone is not privy to how these sort of things work, it really can be a bit creepy from the outside looking in.

Maybe he's uncomfortable with you have an online "life" that he's not a part of? Monogamy isn't merely limited to sex; there's a large psychological aspect there, too.

To quote what you said down below:

snuggling...and various things he wouldn't understand (...vore, macro, etc...)

This can absolutely rub off on someone the wrong way; I'd say he's being reasonable in his request and trepidation, considering the entire thing is unfamiliar to him.

Have you thought, perhaps, explaining exactly why this is important to you?

  • 1) Fourteen. About to be twenty in two months.

  • 2) I don't. "We" don't. They're a minority. The ones that do have well-paying jobs, or differing priorities dictating where their money is budgeted. You said you're fifteen, so the smart-ass, dickish answer would be: go to college, find a job. But really, save if that's what interests you.

"Queer"

Basically anything that doesn't fit into the former four categories. Also "questioning."

It is very sad to see that this subreddit is starting to get filled with memes and "my face when" or "DAE" posts. by Lakiain DotA2

[–]fallenmink 8 points9 points ago

You could, but if it really was 70:30, I'm not sure there would be much of a change.

I feel this post was meant to be sarcastic, though I'm not sure. Either way, it's your sub so obviously run things how you feel they ought to be run.

I don't speak for everyone, and am absolutely biased here, but as your userbase grows something will need to be done if quality (at least quality when defined as "signal to noise ratio" in favor of the latter; i.e. "cheap" content and weighty content) begins to drop. Obviously the community is the judge on what is good content and what is bad content, and I'm only one person.

This is from my standards and perspective. Both of which are entirely subjective. Big grain of salt, etc., etc.

This subreddit has the least memes out of any other game subreddit I've seen.

Yet.

Here's the thing with reddit nowadays, when a community begins to grow in flourish, a lot of the default page "culture" begins to seep in (i.e. joke of the month/memes/image macros/DAE/my-face-when stuff -- I'm trying to phrase this in the least pretentious way possible, bear with me, okay?) as more and more users begin to subscribe.

Reddit has a disproportionate amount of lurkers to contributors (those who either comment or submit/create content); generally speaking, whenever the quality of a sub is in question -- at least when a sub is still young -- there will be large support in the comment sections. Despite that, the same stuff still gets voted up even with outcry in the comment sections. Why? Those who vote generally don't pay attention to rules/comments: the link is opened, laughed at, upvoted. The end.

Unless stopped, this behavior encourages more low-effort content to be produced, since it's easy to "appreciate" with little interaction to the community at-large. I've seen it happen to many subs that I've had to eventually unsubscribe from: if it's not macros/jokes, then it's declining quality in articles; pandering and sensationalism; or adherence to a single, strict worldview, promoting a homogeneous hivemind culture. A bit of a tangent, but the point of it here is that as the subscriber numbers increase, the overall quality tends to sink unless a standard of quality is maintained with moderation and rules.

You're confusing a degradation of content quality with an instantaneous drop in quality. Yes, it's not horrible yet. What it feels like people are asking for here is preventative action. High-quality content needs to be promoted, but, unless promoted and given a change against easy-to-digest content, will drown in the flood of low-effort content.

I'll quote abienz here:

The worse thing is that there is a boatload of discussion to be had about tactics and strategy in this game [...], but anything apart from the weekly discussions gets downvoted to hell.

[–]fallenmink 7 points8 points ago*

It may have been voted on, and that's fine, but that particular rule is essentially the one in question in this thread. People are obviously -- whether "people" implies a majority consensus is a different topic -- lashing against the same rule.

I merely posted to correct goodoldgrim's assertion that "all that crap" had been banned.

(Personally, though, I want it all to be banned. Once it starts, it's hard to stop -- we don't need another good sub to lose its quality; as it stands, the discussion here is still leagues above other subreddits. I hope the new influx of low-effort content isn't a sign of degradation.)

[–]fallenmink 15 points16 points ago

Image macro posts/memes must contain actual Dota 2 related images.

The problem here is that this still allows for "most of that crap," all of the posts on the front page relevant to what is being mentioned in the OP technically fall under that rule.

Why are we allowing commend parties to form in Reddit chat? by blackmailedchefin DotA2

[–]fallenmink 0 points1 point ago

People actually give a shit about commendations in beta?

I asked a guy why he cared about commends in a game once (he was asking for commend trading in allchat at the start of the game), apparently there's a belief out there that the more commendations you have, the less likely you'll be put into low priority if you quit a game.

I've no idea where that came from, but it is indicative of the type of people who trade commends if that misconception is the justification. I asked a few other times in chat channels and in-game when commends where being offered and received that answer a fair few amount of times.

If I may, I'd recommend the original novel by Kazuo Ishiguro; while much slower than the film, it is beautifully written and contains one of my favorite literary passages. It's not too long and I feel is often overlooked for Ishiguro's other works, despite it being, in my opinion, his best novel.

The book is absolutely beautiful.
