One of my favourite parts about living in this city is that we still tell time by cannon by DDTgreasein halifax

I live in the building next to the Metro Centre and it scares me every single day. The blast shakes our windows!

Volunteering in the HRM - Where? by SQUAD-102-Bravoin halifax

I know it's been almost two weeks since you posted this, but Halifax Public Libraries is always looking for volunteers to help with ESL groups. I believe you can ask about it at the information desk at any branch.

Day-trip with the SO coming up, anyone have any destination ideas? by andForMein halifax

[–]euphemystic 1 point2 points ago

I've driven from Halifax to the Cabot Trail and back in one day many times. It's totally doable if you're okay with driving for the majority of the day and spending a bit on gas. It really is worth seeing... some of the lookoffs are breathtaking!

/bias (I grew up in CB and have done the Cabot Trail too many times to count)

There's also some pretty cool places in the Valley (I love Blomidon!) and the South Shore.

I remember that feeling! I went to school in Port Hawkesbury but lived 20 minutes away so it always felt awesome to go to "go to town".

The mall is pretty pathetic now... it seems like Walmart is the only thing that's lasted for more than a year.

Port Hawkesbury is going to be a ghost town. :( I grew up there and find it really strange to come home and see everything run down and empty.

I lived in an apartment on Tower Road that allowed dogs that were well trained and approved by the owners. It was approximately $850 a month and was managed by Twincity (twincity.ca). I don't know if that's out of his price range, but it's at least somewhere to start...

If you were female, I'd suggest Long Tall Sally. They ship to Canada, the US and the UK.

...but I don't think you are female. ;) Haha. Sorry.

Honestly, I feel that college is more effort than it's worth at this point. Do I REALLY need my degree this bad? by bombacodein AskReddit

[–]euphemystic 0 points1 point ago

Yes. As others have said, you need to have proof that you are able to do those things.

Even if it seems like you wouldn't need it right away, you'd probably need it later in life for job security.

HRM Budget Review Pt 1: Halifax Public Libraries by bsommerhalderin halifax

[–]euphemystic 1 point2 points ago*

I work at the branch on Spring Garden and I can tell you that the average wage is not $20. The starting rate for the lowest position is for clerks (shelvers) and is one dollar over minimum wage.

I have a BA and a Library Technician diploma from NSCC and I plan on going to Dal for a Masters degree in Library Sciences because the wages are too low at my current level.

Also, there are way more than 18 people working at SG during daytime hours.

Edit for clarity: There are certainly people at HPL that make well over $20 an hour, but those people have the education and experience to back it up. The people who you are more likely to see (shelvers, circulation, etc) are less likely to make $20 and up.

Also, I might add that I have no idea what many positions bring in, I've just seen job postings and know the rates of lower level employee's from my personal experience.

HRM Budget Review Pt 1: Halifax Public Libraries by bsommerhalderin halifax

I agree. I wish it were possible to provide the same quality of service at all branches. HPL does an excellent job at providing all that they can within their means. Why can't we just stumble upon a free money machine?

HRM Budget Review Pt 1: Halifax Public Libraries by bsommerhalderin halifax

[–]euphemystic 2 points3 points ago

I won’t be surprised if we start hearing people from rural areas cry foul over the fact that downtown Halifax — an area currently best served by the public libraries — is getting this huge new library, when we can’t even keep the doors of the public libraries open for full hours in the rural areas.

This is very true, and I really feel for the rural patrons and staff, but we are in desperate need of the Central Library. The library on Spring Garden is in terrible shape and the building is not fit to house a library anymore. The wiring alone makes it really difficult to have enough computers to meet the public demand. I believe the demand for a new library downtown is more pressing due to the amount of patrons that will benefit from the Central Library (vs. the amount of patrons benefiting from more hours).

All in all, this new budget blows.

Don't be ridiculous. A child of five is likely to have a very vivid imagination. I'm sure she'd understand that they were baby birds if someone told her so.

My g/f then (who is, also, my g/f now) was not so pleased with this but faked understanding

I am actually even going next weekend to see her, her sister, he son, and her mother and some other friends.

Is your girlfriend really okay with that? If you recognize that she was faking understanding, why would you want to make it worse by going to visit?

New library in Germany by PaulGiamattiin pics

[–]euphemystic 0 points1 point ago

I work in a library exactly like that. Who are we to discriminate against "homeless fucks"? They are annoying and aggravate me every day, but even still, I believe that a library should be open for everyone, regardless of their social ranking. Sometimes the library is the only refuge for people like that, and I am totally fine with that. What better place to go when you've found yourself in such a situation?

So long as they're not causing shit (drugs, sex, harassing people, etc) then why shun them (and all other patrons) with shitty, unwelcoming furniture?

I used my iPod touch, but I have a screen protector that goes over my camera lens. I didn't realize that it looked like it does until I saw it on the computer.
