Medical Professionals of Reddit, what's the most fucked up thing you've seen? (NSFW / NSFL) by PhilosophicFruitFlyin AskReddit

[–]erintintin24 0 points1 point ago

A similar thing happened at the hospital I work at. A 13 year old bichon was brought in by the family's housekeeper; she was watching the dog while they were out of town. She brought him in because his head was bleeding and she thought this small cyst he had on his head had ruptured. We shaved the hair to look at the wound more closely and ended up finding multiple puncture wounds and lacerations all over the dogs head. She had taken the dog to her house, like she had other times she had watched the dog, where she had her two large dogs (not sure of the breeds). They'd never had problems before, but obviously something had happened this time. We think the little dog must have been hiding under a couch/bed/chair/etc and stuck his head out and one or both of the larger dogs mistook him for a toy. We think this because, while his head had sustained quite an attack, everything below the neck was completely unscathed. The doctor stitched up a few of the wounds, but many of the punctures had to be left open. One of the dogs ears was detached from the scalp and the dog was in respiratory distress. She was barely responsive and very mentally inappropriate. After the shaving, bruising, and swelling, she barely looked like any creature from this planet. I felt so bad for the little girl. We kept her in oxygen overnight because the family wanted to see her and talk to the doctor when they came home the next day. Thankfully, for the sake of the dog, they decided to euthanize after seeing her. Despite everything we were doing for her, she was getting worse and anything we would continue to do would only have been delaying the inevitable. It gets hard seeing this kind of thing over and over again in the ER/ICU, but the success stories make it all worth it.

It's funny, though, because I work in a veterinary hospital's ER and ICU and I know a lot of the stuff I do frequently (without hesitation!) would gross most people out, but reading most of these stories about humans makes me nauseated. Humans gross me out.

I feel like after working in a small animal veterinary ER, the level of disgustingness is lost on me. I cringed a little while reading this, but after coming home last night in scrubs covered in the blood, urine, feces, and anal gland fluid of a boxer that was hit by a car, it doesn't completely gross me out. The stories about humans, though... ew.

I'm a veterinary assistant applying to vet school in the fall. I have cleaned the OR after ovariohysterectomies on bitches with pyometra. Nasty, nasty smells. Nasty.

This made me think of how before I started working at a dog daycare 3 years ago, a lab was a lab was a lab was a lab to me. Other than coat color, I didn't think they looked any different from each other. After 3 years of working at daycares and at a vet, I probably know over a hundred labs (of all colors) and if you put them all in a room, I'd be able to tell you who was who. I also notice when new people start working at daycare they'll mistake one beagle for another, one golden for another, etc, and I'll always be thinking "how could they think that was so-and-so? they look nothing alike."

Yay, somebody with a reasonable answer. Chocolate toxicity in dogs depends on the type of chocolate (bakers chocolate is worse than dark chocolate which is worse than milk chocolate... white chocolate is pretty much harmless) and the size of the dog. A piece of chocolate cheesecake is unlikely to have enough theobromine in it to harm almost any dog, much less a larger dog like a husky. You can find charts with rough estimates of the toxic amount for different sized dogs and different quality chocolates. Anything under the "toxic amount" will just give your dog diarrhea for a few days.

Grapes and raisins, on the other hand... even one can send a big dog into acute renal failure, but some big dogs can have a bunch of them and never have a problem. The reason is still unknown, but it's probably best to stay away from feeding them dogs.

Cropped ears, too. And that is usually the owners' choice, not the breeder's.

I say this having a friend who just got her doberman puppy's ears cropped. I work in a veterinary ICU and at a dog daycare and I am applying to vet schools next fall. I am so angry with my friend.

Friend's dog ate gum. Went for walk. This happened. by mixmasteraaronin pics

[–]erintintin24 5 points6 points ago

True. I work in the ICU at an emergency vet and we had a dog come in a while back who had eaten gum that contained xylitol, but it went unnoticed for a few days. They brought her in a couple of days after she would have consumed it because she was extremely lethargic and had vomited. Blood tests showed she was on the cusp of liver failure. Luckily, she was otherwise a young, healthy dog and the doc treated it quickly enough that she ended up being alright, but even a few more hours without treatment could have killed her.

You must not live in a big city. Both daycares I've worked at have been ~$30/day for daycare and ~$40/night for boarding.

I drive on 290 almost every day and it's terrible. I never fully realized how terrible until I was flying back from MSP last weekend and saw the endless stream of headlights and taillights on the Eisenhower AND the Kennedy at 7 PM.

I thought the weather here was terrible too... until I lived in Minneapolis for 5 years. Now I am grateful when winter rolls around.

Would you pick one of your animals to live over a random human being? by iBigBoyBrianin AskReddit

This might make other people think I'm terrible, but I would choose my dogs over many people I know. There are even a few dogs I know that aren't mine that I would choose over many people I know.

To be clear, I work with dogs 5 days/week, volunteer at a wildlife rescue, and plan to go to vet school, so I'm a bit of an "animal person."

When it comes to instinct, yes. Instinctually, my beagle enjoys nothing more than tracking and killing rabbits. She was never taught to do this and she's never been rewarded for doing it. She has no interest in birds, even if they are within feet of her. She even has very little interest in squirrels after she realizes they are not, in fact, rabbits. Beagles were bred to hunt rabbits. Rabbit hunting with dogs is even called "beagling." Rabbits are the only thing my beagle is aggressive towards. She's never snarled, lunged at, nipped at, or bitten any other living creature, that includes humans.

My beagle kills rabbits methodically and my beagle/dalmatian kills birds when she can, but they'd never think of hurting a person. As said elsewhere in this thread, they are just doing what they were bred to do, and human aggression and dog aggression (or any animal aggression) are completely unrelated to each other.

To be fair, that just shows that the dog had a high prey drive. I have worked at dog daycares for almost 3 years now and there are many dogs, big and small, that jump and bite when you pick up another dog. By picking the dog up, you've made the dog seem important and the dog thinks they should be doing something about it. There are at least 3 large dogs that come to the daycare I work at now on a regular basis that try to "get" any dog that an employee picks up on the floor, and none of them are pits. Also, many dogs tend to do it even when we are just leading a dog by its collar to timeout because, again, you have drawn extra attention to it.

We just try not to pick dogs up when the dogs aren't split by size unless it's absolutely necessary, or if we know none of the dogs on the floor will try to bite at them.

You can even find plenty of purebred dogs at shelters. They may not have papers, but unless you're showing them, it doesn't matter. My parents have a 12 year old chihuahua who was abused and neglected before she went to the shelter 6 years ago and she is one of the best/friendliest chihuahuas I have ever met!

As somebody who works at a dog daycare, a future veterinarian, and a proud mom to a dalmatian/beagle rescued from the humane society, I can't tell this to people enough. There are so many dogs (and cats! and other animals!) at shelters that need good homes. Unless you're breeding (responsibly, of course) or showing your dogs, there is no need to get your dog from a breeder. Or to not have them spade or neutered.
